why did auctions disappear?

years ago, we shut down the auction house because trades and user shops covered most needs. the idea was: shops for lower-priced items, auctions for mid-tier, and trades for high-value bartering. but as shop price limits increased, auctions dwindled—20 pages of listings shrank to 10, then 5, then barely any.

what makes auctions tricky?

auctions might seem simple, but they run on a lot of behind-the-scenes processes. every bid triggers notifications, every completed auction distributes items and currency, and all of that relies on the cron—a background system that, here on subeta, has almost a mythical reputation. for a long time, it was fragile and unpredictable, which made auctions a headache to maintain.

but now? we’ve got better systems. so, let’s give it another shot. if it works smoothly and people actually use it, auctions might be back for good.

🏛 the subeta auction house

thanks to a grant from the centropolis government, the auction house has reopened—on a trial basis. it’s simple: list items, set a starting bid, choose a bid increment, and watch the magic happen.

what’s new?

• 🆕 auction house fee: a 5% commission on final sales to keep operations running.
• ❌ strict item limits: only high-value or rare items are allowed—no common junk.
• 👑 npc participation: the hustler has been hoarding sbq items from recent quest testing, and now he’s auctioning them off. expect fresh listings every few hours! other npcs might join in too.

🧐 gold account insights

gold accounts now have access to a gold account price analysis on auction listings. it’s nothing you couldn’t figure out yourself, but it saves a click and makes bidding decisions easier. just a little perk i’m testing out!

I'll admit I rarely use auctions at all, but I see quite a fw r200 boards with people "auctioning" cws, I think it could be a great feature! (The only thing that could deter people is the 5% fee on csc proceedings - i guess that could hurt the return margin)

"thanks to a grant from the centropolis government" dang we love a government that's generous with grants 😉 i'm not seeing the gold account price analysis on any of the auctions though, is it only available to certain tiers of subscribers?

The way other sites do it is that there is no fee on their premium currency, but there is an auction fee on their free currency, so Subeta could absolutely use the same mechanic, which would be less frustrating.

What would define as "rare" enough to qualify? Is it based on SP worth or item rarity?

an auction fee sounds fair, without needing a % on the sale! I have so many cws that are unpriced and that I would happily chuck into the auction house if I had the opportunity to!

Every time I try to bid on an auction for Professor New Krown Lace Sleeve I get an error. I tried logging into kumos again, several times, even deleting cookies and logging in again, still the error. No one has bid on that one so maybe it's just broken? I'd really like to bid for it...

Auctions are looking great , but I've tried bidding and all I get is an error popping up:

Despite it showing me as being logged in, I clicked "log in", it takes me to the main Kumos page, I click the auction again (and refresh), try to bid.... and get the same error again. I tried logging out from Kumos then logging in again - same error message

I refreshed, then tried bidding more sP than I had on hand - that gave me a message saying I couldn't do that (as expected). I then tried bidding the right amount compared to the minimum increment and what I had on hand, and get that "unexpected error" error again :( (Win 11, Chrome Version 132.0.6834.111 (64-bit))

Can't list an item at the auction house...telling me "Access denied. You must be a staff team member"

(sorry for the extra ping, but I can't edit my previous post in Kumos) - to clarify, if you have already done the initial first bid, I can bid. If there's zero bids currently, then I get the error message I mentioned in my previous post.

Same problem like other players have reported. Getting an error message of access denied because I'm not a staff member.

I never used the auctions and I don't think I would use it, even if it's brought back. I prefer selling things in my user shops.

The event links seem to be working now, I'm not sure how they will react when bidding on a new item yet.

Could I make a suggestion: A link of winning bids might be useful, so you know which Auctions you bid on. This would be very useful if there is more than one auction for the same item. Or even a section on the Auction house main page stating which Auction you a winning.
