Pretty sure you find them on the nature walk and have to keep clicking on them during the walk. Otherwise there are elixirs

this is the nature hike in question, btw. your first time through, i believe you will see a little scootle on each page. if you click on it, by the end you'll get a message that it's taken a liking to you and you'll have the option to "adopt" a new scootle. all scootles are created genderless, which was a neat little feature since i believe regular pet species could only be created as male or female at the time (and had to be made genderless through use of the genderless berry).
