happy luminaire, everyone! π
weβre about to relaunch the mysterious melody feature, where users can team up and send gifts throughout the day. we tested it last week with gold account users (just one of the perks of going gold!) and iβm wrapping up the final copy rn. but i want to break down one specific feature (and a bug i causedβand fixed) in more detail.
with mysterious melody, i wanted to bring in an npc to join your group without making it feel shady or fake. so: melody joins each group and buys items from user shops throughout the day, prioritizing wishlist items from group members.
this is the first time weβve had an npc act like a real userβmelody uses the same system players do to make purchases. we added safeguards to keep her in check: 1. rarity limits: melody wonβt buy retired or custom wearables, but sheβs not locked to r1-99 like most site features. sheβll grab event items or game prizes if theyβre listed cheap enough. 2. sp limits: like everyone else, melody has a budget. if she runs out of sp, we get an alert in staff chat to investigate. if her account hasnβt been exploited, we can top her up as needed.
yes, her programming is very basic right now!
melody now evaluates whether an item in a shop is a βdealβ and can snag it quickly. this upgrade will eventually be available to everyoneβjust need to optimize the queries first.
coming soon: price tracking for all!
97% of the overpayments came from her using historical data to buy at the high end of an itemβs price range. on the flip side, there were three cases where melody bought a cw for its csc price in sp. all three transactions have been reversed, and the users were notified (and directed to this thread).
as for the overpayments? weβre not reversing those. enjoy the extra sp. π
letβs see how it goes! stay tuned for the relaunch of mysterious melody.

Great! Looking forward to participating next time. I also am in favour of the return of price tracking!
This is not a mysterious melody feedback thread - we'll be launching it live later today. You can use the GA testing thread for any questions or feedback until then.
From the GA testing thread:
So I suspect you were paired with people who were following those details from the first post.

The testing was fun, excited to try using this when it comes out!
this is awesome! i can't wait to see how it plays out, thanks so much for putting time into this and getting it running! MM was always one of my favorite parts of lumi!!
Looking forward to trying this out!
Thank you anonymous!
π€¦ββοΈ I forgot the whole section about what I'm excited about these agents being able to do in the future!
with Melody buying from user shops, she is prioritizing items from wishlists. the next phase of that might look like prioritizing books that a pet hasn't read yet, or food that a pet hasn't had before. lots of really exciting opportunities to use what we know about the user to make sure that items are more personalized than just a wild spray of r1-99 items.
this kind of ποΈ mind reading ποΈ can be used in non-agent ways as well - we can have quests ask for things using those same parameters. i'm excited to see where we're able to take it!

i hear you! i directed you to the other thread because thatβs where iβm actively collecting feedback and answering questions about that specific feature. it helps me keep everything organized and ensures that nothing gets missed. i might not be actively posting, but it's where i've specifically asked for this kind of question so that i can include it in my work.
your question absolutely counts as valuable input, and i want to make sure itβs part of that conversation. this topic is about NPC agents. if thereβs something iβm misunderstanding about what youβre looking for, let me know.

This seems like a very smart and creative way to not just re-tool MM but to open up variability in future activities and NPC interactions. Excited to see how this goes and what it brings to the site moving forward.
OK I am legitimately confused. What does random Melody buying things from user shops have to do with Mysterious melody?
The reason I do not participate in Mysterious Melody is I will throw in something worth 20 il and be gifted back something that is work 8k. So for me, in the past, it was never a good trade.
So how are these two features connected? Sorry but I am really confused. lol

I really really extremely want:no worries at all, this is a precursor post! there is a Gold Account Testing Thread that outlines the functionality of the new MM (spoiler: you get put into a group of multiple users, and melody, to try and balance it out).
we noticed that she made some mistakes purchasing items during that test and i wanted to get a thread explaining why you might see melody in your shop logs out asap.

I've never tried this because I've heard in the past that a user either didn't get anything from their partner or only cheap stuff. The group I'm in will be having a secret santa so guess I will stick with that. Thanks for all the info. :)

This is essentially going to be a completely different MM from what we are used too. They are adding the NPC into the mix to ensure everyone receives an item of interest BUT it sounds like the NPC is limited by sP constraints. So you would enter and if noone put anything in you would still at least get whatever the NPC gives you back. The NPC will be shopping from user shops increasing revenue of users around the site.
I'm interested to play the game but it does make me sad that the MM we used to know will be gone.

OHH I see - if she is in shop logs that it is due to the testing. But normally she would not be buying from user shops? Thanks for the link, that did help make more sense of it. :-)

OK so I will LOVE this feature with missing food or books -- but how can we show Melody (or another NPC) which pet of ours is the one we care about books/food?
So basically, she will try to gift an items from a users WL instead of just something totally random? If that is true then I could get behind this.
