[edit] The group has been made! You can join us over at The Old Tome if you're interested! : D I'm still setting things up, so there are no events running currently, but you can come in and chat. <3 ——— Hi! So I'm a big fan of writing, and have been participating in NaNoWriMo and its offshoot events for over a decade, but there's been some tumult there over the past year. I won't go into detail here, but it's made me want to steer clear of them. I still intend to do a 50k word goal in November when it rolls around (I've gotten so used to it now) but it won't be on the actual site.
While I was never very active on the forums to begin with, I did find that the sense of comradery I felt at the knowledge that there were a bunch of other people out there taking on the same challenge motivated me. That's why I thought that maybe a writing forum group here on Subeta might be interesting ... as far as websites I socialize on go, Subeta is the only one that I consistently talk on without feeling like I'm talking to a brick wall most of the time. I could get a discord server together, but I don't really like handing out my discord username to virtual strangers LOL
All that is to say, would anyone be interested in a writing group? You wouldn't need to be doing big challenges (like a NaNoWriMo), but I would host threads for those who wanted to. You could be writing for personal projects, novels, games, poetry, or whatever. It would be more about having people to hype you up or commiserate with than about what and how you're writing. Sharing your work would be optional (I'm quite shy about that myself and probably wouldn't share much of mine). We could maybe have little motivational contests, like sprints, and there could be prizes ... I'm not a very rich Subeta player but I could scrape together something at least. :'D I'm also disorganized, so it wouldn't be like the most immaculate thing you've ever seen, but I think there's value in a small corner of the site to talk about your writing projects with. I know that there's the writing section of the forums too, of course, but I feel like having a small group might feel more cozy. I've been sitting on this idea since the start of April, as I was going to do Camp NaNo when I learned of all of what happened, but haven't been able to work up to just making a group, but if others show interest I'd be more inclined to go for it!
For those who wanna know what happened with NaNo --
I'm not posting this to stir up a conversation about it, or to shame anyone still using the site even knowing what the situation is, but it feels weird to bring it up without providing information. This reddit post gives a summary of events, and there's a lot more info in various other threads if you're inclined to do some digging. Just please don't make this thread about discussing the negligence of the people behind NaNo, ty <3
I'm not sure if I'd share anything I'm writing either since I'm super sensitive about it, but I love to write and I've been looking for an opportunity to make more friends and chat with more people here. So if there's any other interest, I'm definitely down!
I hear you - sharing writing has always been hard for me, so there'd be no pressure to if you didn't want to! ^_^ I'll keep you posted!
I would be! I write pretty much constantly and have done the 50k Nano for four years in a row. That's definitely something I would be interested in.
I'd be interested! I mostly write fanfic these days, but I do a bunch of original things too. I'm sad to hear that about NaNo, though. I haven't done it in a few years, 50k is a bit too high of a bar with working full time and adulting in general.
Hey, nice! I'll definitely keep you in the loop for a group, then! :)
It is a real shame, yeah. It's been a part of my yearly schedule for so long, so I'm not yet sure how it's gonna feel to not sign up when November rolls around. 50k is a whole heck of a lot when you have to factor in work and life! It took me years to get fast enough at writing to be able to do it. @
4 people isn't bad for a start! I'm brainstorming names right now, and if all goes well then I should be able to make and set up a group this weekend maybe~ If any of you have friends you think might like to join, feel free to ping them too. ^^ And, if you have any preferences for group names (wordplay and puns, short and sweet, etc.) you can let me know that as well - I wanna pick something that everyone will like!
Thank you!
I've never been involved with the official NaNo stuff, really, I always just did it on my own so the idea of a group is definitely appealing.
... well... I've done NaNoWriMo for the past few years and finally managed to finish one last year. But I never even knew there was an organization for this, let alone the disaster it turned into. Yay me for living under a rock.
I would love to see a writing group on Subeta. Unfortunately Summer is coming up and it already is the start of my busy season with being offline for a week + starting Saturday, then intermittently until the end of the month.
Winter is my writing time between snow shoveling.
Once upon a time I was in a writing group at the library, we'd get a prompt and have a week to do that. - mostly poetry- Florissa's story came about because of that group.
Something like that - but not strictly poetry - would be fun here too. Even if we don't share with each other but manage to say - did the prompt, I think it turned out good. As enough? I dunno.
Anyways, Count me in please. Even if I am vanishing until the 27th. I would love to be a part of this. <3

I would absolutely love a writing focused group!
I hear you - I've always been a bit of a loner when it comes to writing. ^^ I'm naturally inclined to go hermit mode when writing, but I don't know why, because I have mostly positive experiences when sharing the process with other people, so hopefully this group helps me to do that more! Really, NaNo is whatever you make it. I know a lot of people who participated in the 50k goal, but never used the site. :D
Congratulations on finishing last year! :D It was always sort of one of those events where, if you weren't looking in the right places, you wouldn't know it was happening. I saw a lot of people saying that they never knew the site existed after the controversy came to light, so you wouldn't be alone in that!
Yes, what you described is definitely something I'd like to do with this group! Optional prompts for people to join in on if they want something to inspire them to write. ^_^ I'm sorry that the timing isn't great, but I have no plans for any activity requirements, so you're more than welcome to join up and participate whenever you have the time. :) I'll be sure to let you know when the group is up!
Wonderful! I'll let you know when the group is up! :)
I used the site for the word tracker because I like seeing the numbers go up but I never used any other function, honestly.
It's done! I haven't gotten all of the threads I'd like to make set up yet, but the basics are there, so I figured I might as well let people know while I chip away at it over the weekend! I tentatively named the group The Old Tome, because I thought it had a cozy feeling (who doesn't love the smell of old books), but I can always change it if people don't like it. :) I've never really been admin to a forum group before, so bear with me while I get things set up and find my footing haha~
I did like the word tracker and graph that it would create as the month went on - that's one thing I'll definitely miss, haha :'D
I'm going to work out a way to do it without using the site, I think. A few years back, I made a calendar that I could color in! I bet you could do something like that with one of those bullet journals or something.
Oh this is awesome! So glad to see this come together :D
Back to setting the group up today! If anyone has ideas for challenges or events you'd like to participate in, feel free to let me know. :) & everyone is free to chat in the group too, even though it's not totally set up yet!
Oh, that's a good idea! I've never done bullet journaling, but it might be fun to get a journal with graph paper or something and keep track that way. ^^
Me too! I thought it was going to take a lot longer to see interest, since the forums can be slow, so I was pleasantly surprised! :)
I think I'm going to try it this time! I have a few journals sitting around that I haven't used.
You'll have to let me know how it goes! We can cheer each other on~ :D
Hi! I don't know if you are still doing this forum group, but I just started writing again and I am very interested. I came to this forum to look for something exactly like this!

Hello! <3 I've been out of touch with my own writing habits lately, so I haven't been maintaining the group as much as I should unfortunately. 😥 That said, I still love that there are people on Subeta interested in a group like this and would like to support it if people are still interested! We did have a small group of people in there and chatting for a while, so I will try to make some time to engage with the group again! Please don't hesitate to join and use the general threads that are set up!
