Is it socially acceptable to comment on several year old forum posts?! Tryna run up my numbers but I also wanna comment on posts that do interest me and catch my eye but many of them are so old! Hmm.

Not sure about faux pas, but it IS against the rules, so I wouldn't recommend it.
You can view the rule about it here with all of the specifics, but if the thread hasn't been posted in for six months or more, it'll be considered necroing except in a few specific forums that have different limits.
If you just want to get your post numbers up, though, the user run games sub right here in this forum is a great place to do that! Lots of threads to interact with in there.
And while I'm not a member of it anymore, the Posting Frenzy forum group should be a good place to get a lot of posting done, too. (Just be aware that if you want the forum point currency, posts in group forums will not generate them.)
