Recently I did a gift giveaway on the Lumi forums where I had users leave an animal fact in exchange for a WL item. This is the topic
I didn't expect it to be such a big success, but I actually was able to collect a lot of really awesome animal facts! I'm an avid animal-lover, so I'm always on the lookout for bits of trivia like this-- Which is why I've decided to post everyone's contributions here!
I am hoping to make a collective post of random animal trivia for trivia enjoyers like me! One of my favorite things about talking to new people is that everybody seems to have at least one random piece of information like this, so if you feel so inclined, I would encourage you to please leave your animal facts here as well!

Alpacas
-The members of an alpaca herd will all use the same loo rather than pooping randomly. This helps prevent diseases from spreading.
Bats
-Honduran white bats will chew at the ribs of leaves to create tents that they roost under during the day! Their bright white and yellow coloration might be a defense mechanism; underneath the green leaf, they look like dappled sunlight to help them avoid predators.
Butterflies
-Have taste buds on their feet
-Some species are known to drink blood
-Their purring is known to have healing qualities -Cat science is estimated to be about 20 yrs. behind dog science :( -Are extremely social creatures, and thrive in groups!

-A group of crows is called a murder -Have been observed using tools -Hold funerals for eachother -Have their own language with regional dialects -examine the body of their dead friends to figure out the cause of death so they can avoid a similar fate. It's a real.....murder investigation! ;)

-Can stick their tongues out

-can jump 9ft high & 30 ft forward
Dolphins
-Have been observed using pufferfish to get high
Ferrets

Goldfish
-If you keep a goldfish in a dark room, it will become pale
-Are actually an invasive species that can decimate freshwater ecosystems
Hummingbirds
-Move their wings horizontal and in a figure-eight pattern, which helps them hover
Kangaroos
-There are four types of kangaroo: Red, Eastern Grey, Western Grey, and Antilopine
-Are known to lead predators into bodies of water and drown them
Koalas
-Koala’s have fingerprints almost identical to human.
It is so hard to distinguish between the fingerprints of koalas and humans that even under a microscope it is hard to tell. There are even reported cases of a koala’s fingerprints confusing forensics at crime scenes.
Mantis Shrimp
-Mantis shrimp can see colors we can’t. We can see 3 wavelengths of light (red, blue, green) but mantis shrimp can see 4x that (including uv light). They use this super sight to communicate with other mantis shrimp in secret like James Bond spies - predators can’t see the light their scales give off so they flash their scales in patterns like a type of Morse code. They stay hidden but can talk/have whole conversations with other shrimp without alerting predators around them.
Mice
-Can identify two separate languages
Moles
-De Winton's Golden Mole was recently found and videoed after 80 some odd years of being believed extinct
Otters
-Hold hands when they sleep so they don't drift apart
-Have little pouches under their armpits that they use to store their favorite rock
-Use their favorite rock as a tool
-River otters rarely make their own home, and are often referred to as "squatter otters"
Parrots
-A group of parrots is called a Pandemonium
Peacocks
-A group of peacocks is called an ostentation
Platypuses
-Platypuses have prehensile tails
Seahorses
-A male seahorse caries the babies/ gives birth- not the female
Sharks
-Sand Tiger Sharks are the only species of shark known to pass gas
-The first sharks evolved in the Devonian period (400 million years ago) making them older than the North Star, which formed around 70 million years ago.
Sloths
-Can hold their breath longer than dolphins - for as long as 40 minutes! This is apparently due to the amount of gas in their stomachs from the leaves that they eat.
Squid
-A group of squid can be referred to as a squad, school, or shoal
Vultures
-Black vultures, who are primarily scavengers, have been known to eat ticks off of capybaras
Whales
-A whale's heart only beats nine times per minute
Wombats
-Are the only animal in the world to produce cube-shaped poo.

I am an avid animal facts enjoyer so I whouldn't mind sharing some facts I know here! I'm starting with just a few now. Today's topic: The Axolotl!
This guy has very interesting facts surrounding it:
Despite most people recognizing them as cute and pink, that's actually a genetic mutation selected by breeders! Normal colored axolots are actually dark brown.
There are more pet axolotl that there exist in the wild
Axolotls can regenerate any lost limb of their body and in some recorded cases parts of their brain, hearts and nervous sistem.
The name axolotl comes from the ancient Nahuatl language, which can translate to "strange beast", "water beast" or "water dog".
The reason for the axolotl's strange appearance is because they stay looking like babies forever! Axolotl are actually a type of salamander, and every species is born with external gills and looking like Axolots, however while every other species grows out of this look eventually Axolotls stay babyfaced forever. It is possible for and Axolotls to be forced to look like an adult salamander, but this only happens during extremely stressful circumstances so it's, of course, not a good thing to see.
Mine can only recall a few.
Polar bears are predominantly left-pawed, as are Pacific Sand dabs.
Mine believe the latter is the only flatfish gknown to be left finned.
Humans are the animals we are probably all most familiar with so here's something interesting: the future of human evolution can be at least loosely predicted, and the predictions forecast future humans being taller, more lightly built, more agreeable, and having smaller brains.
