So I've struggled with my vision for a long time, but I always put off getting glasses. Recently, however, my vision has been getting noticeably worse. I wouldn't say that my vision is horrendous or anything, but I truly didn't realize how blurry my eyesight was until the moment I put on my glasses. I almost burst into tears because I was so overwhelmed by how clear everything was.
After about a week of wearing my glasses, I think my eyes have mostly adjusted, but I'm struggling with the feeling of my glasses RESTING ON MY SINUSES. I've always had terrible allergies and this is driving me absolutely bonkers. I feel like I have to blow my nose constantly even though nothing is coming out. I'm at a loss of how to relieve this discomfort, since now when I take the glasses off, everything is so blurry it hurts.
Not to mention, no matter what I do, the lenses seem to always be absolutely FILTHY. I've tried the little micro-fiber cloth they give you for them, but all it does is smear the smudges around. I've tried alcohol wipes but they don't seem to work either since they leave the glass a streaky mess. I've googled possible solutions but all I get is product reviews for lens wipes... WHICH AGAIN, haven't been working. x-x
Can anyone with glasses PLEASE PLEASE tell me that this isn't going to be my life forever?! How am I supposed to clean these things? PLEASE teach me, since my fiance who has been wearing glasses his entire life is NO HELP at all. He just laughs at me and says "welcome to my world" like he enjoys my suffering. How do the bespectacled folk cope with this never ending, smudgy, blurry nightmare?!

I'm afraid that I don't have any wonderful advice, but I empathize with you. I'm your age and just started wearing glasses as well. I'd worn contact lenses from 13-21 and then just stopped because I felt my eyes were fine apart from not being able to read smaller text from a distance.
Well, in 5 years, my eyes got bad and it came to the point where I could barely read close up. I thought about getting contacts again, but since my eyes get irritated so easily I decided on glasses. Would contact lenses be an option for you? That's the only thing I can think of, unfortunately, However, you can always get your glasses adjusted. If they're pushing too hard on your sinuses then that's a major problem and I'd definitely look into that/tell your eye doctor. Good luck either way. I wish I had the miracle cure!
strike first, strike hard, no mercy.

Oof I don't envy you - I've worn glasses since kindergarten and honestly never thought about what it would be like to have to adjust to wearing them at an older age.
If your glasses are the kind with nose pads, you can get those adjusted to be less tight and put less pressure on your nose. You can also get your glasses adjusted so that they hug your ears more, which may also make them more comfortable on your nose too. However, there's a tradeoff--they may slip down more, or may be too tight around your ears. It may take a lot of adjustments to find a fit that's right for you.
Eventually, you'll be able to ignore any crud that gathers on your lenses. Your brain will probably get used to it and just censor it out of your vision, if that makes sense lol. If I have a huge smudge on my glasses, I typically have to clean it, but for the most part small debris like dust or skin oil doesn't bother me.
A couple of tips, though they may be too little too late since you've already got your glasses:
Best of luck to you!
I appreciate you friend, hopefully we both get accustomed to our glasses soon ๐ฅบ๐ฉต
thankyou for the advice! I'll definitely be looking into the anti-oil stuff since I have always had very oily skin. Unfortunately I can't take pain meds due to a liver condition so I'm just toughing it out. The pain has mostly subsided, right now it's really just the general annoyance of having them resting on my sinuses, and then sliding down my nose when I try to adjust them LOL. I'm glad I was fortunate enough to have my fiance warn me about getting the glasses with the little nose-things though. I would have hated for those little metal bits to get stuck in my hair! ๐ญ

I've worn glasses since the summer I turned 3. So over thirty years, so allow me to give a little advice:
Your nose pads are too tight if they feel like your sinuses are blocked. Go get them adjusted some, they probably need to come "out" at the top. Lighter frames might help in the future (like titanium) and my biggest peeve here, personally, is that the all plastic frames are typically the lightest but also are impossible to get adjusted correctly on the nose.
Never use straight up alcohol on your glasses, you'll wreck the lenses. You're basically stripping the coating off of them. My best advice is gentle soap (like Softsoap, Dawn, etc) and water, shower with your glasses if you must and use a gentle COTTON cloth. Some of the microfiber cleaning clothes are absolutely jokes. You'll always have eyebrow prints and you'll get eyelashes on them, it's normal.
Clip-on sunglasses are also a joke. Photo-gray lenses are godly, they're lenses that darken whenever you go outside, they come in brown (which isn't as nice) and gray (which honestly is delightful.)
Headaches are unfortunately like the most common thing that'll happen with glasses - the script changes, you have short hair and you grow it out (my ongoing issue) and your head hurts from suddenly having hair there where you didn't before, take your pick. Some can be pretty easily dealt with but the script adjustment headache is an unfortunate just gotta deal with it.
Be mindful of your environment. Like in my case, I do a lot of renovation work meaning there's fine dust from like drywall or sawdust. Those things scratch lenses. Sand does too. Don't wipe your glasses in those instances, wash/rinse them asap or wear safety goggles over them.
Anyways, if you have other questions or whatever, hit me up. I'm happy to help with this. Good luck!

Thank you so much! This is all actually really helpful. My fiance and I will both be switching to gentle soap/ cloth after this! He said he didn't know that you weren't supposed to use alcohol either. I really appreciate all the advice, friend! I think you just saved two people's glasses ๐คฃ

Omg. XD Hey, like I said, I'm happy to help if you have questions about them. I hope it works out well for you both!

I very much agree with water on them first. A nice warmth temp helps soften and loosen up oils and grime to wash off easier. Micro fiber cloths with a SPRAY wash are great until the cloth is gunked up. They say you can wash them but it's best to buy new ones. Once washed they pill up which is a scratch factor, and then don't seem to clean as well overall after. You can use alcohol based cleaners but make sure to spray the cloth not the lens. The pre wet wipes should only be used in dire reasons, any other time I find the rinse and wash to keep them better for longer. As for the feeling it does take adjusting. I also suffer allergies and HATE it when I have a stuffy nose with glasses. Always feels bothersome at those times. I've been wearing glasses for almost 30 years and still bump and bonk them. It happens. Just if it happens hard enough take them to your eyeglasses place for a readjust, this should be done for free unless they have to replace hardware. Can't tell you how many times I've bonked the nose pieces out of shape ๐
FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.
welcome to the glasses club! i can see that you've gotten lots of good advice already, but wanted to throw my two cents in as well, as someone who started wearing glasses at the tender age of eight, haha
there's a couple different types of bridges glasses could have. you might have nose pad, saddle, or keyhole frames. i found that the nose pads hurt my nose, and felt an immediate positive difference after switching to saddle frames. (the nose pad frames have those little "legs" that rest on your nose, while the saddle and keyhole are just a continuation of the glasses material in a little arch.)
I'm also not sure where you're at in the world, but Target Optical has a lens cleaning solution that i swear is the best in the entire universe. (also, buying frames online is a complete game changer. eyebuydirect is my favorite!)

Thankyou!! I'm going to have to go to target next time I go to town. Mine are just frames, though. They don't have the little nose-pad things. (I got those stuck in my hair on a pair of sunglasses when I was a kid, so I avoided those lol.)

oh yes, my hair got stuck on them allllll the time, which was also part of why i didn't want them anymore!
how're you adjusting to wearing them? i always find that there's an adjustment period between frames.
i just got round frames for the first time ever, and it took a day or two before my eyes adjusted to being able to see in a 360 radius vs the square field of vision i had before!

Ive had them for over a month now so I've adjusted by now, I've gotten to the point where I can't really read much without them haha

Not sure about the sinus problem (sorry) but I've heard of using a small amount of dish soap and water to clean your glasses.
Looking for and
Like other have said light glasses will probably help with the issue of weight. That and getting silicone nose rests. They do have butterfly silicone pads to stick to glasses without wire nose rests so no worries about hair catching. The spray solutions from any glasses shop will also be perfect for getting the glasses perfectly clean. That and buying small microfiber TOWELS! They're also good for dusting if you buy a pack of them. And you'll need to clean them periodically but not often and can be easily thrown in the laundry on the gentle cycle.
Welcome to the glasses club :') my prescription is -7.75 in one eye and -6.25 in the other. I can only really see clearly like 3 inches from my face and past is just color blobs lol. Got my first pair at like 6 or 7 so I can't even remember how it feels to not wear glasses.
Drink some water
Untense yourself
Get up and stretch your legs

My two cents of wisom from my experience in wearing glasses for 10 years now =D If you want frames with nosepads (I prefer those) and have a sensible nose, pads do come in different hardnesses as well. You might want to try soft ones / for sensitie skin, that could help with the pressure issue. And never worry to go to your (or any, really) optician and ask them to readjust your glasses because the fit does not feel right, I find they will gladly help you by readjusting the fit. Also, my mother got a little box, like a large glasses case, filled with a washing detergent for glasses, where you just put the glasses in, shake, and then get them out and rinse with clear water, This does miracles for clean glasses! Sadly, I do not know where she got this from, she wonยดt tell me. But soap, warm water and a soft cotton will do very well, as others have already told you! I hope your situation is getting better - and you just reminded me, I need to get my glasses adjusted again!

Hi! I know I must be late to the party, but Iโm an optician so maybe I can give a little help. Wire frames (ones with nose pads) might be your best friend. They can be adjusted where they sit more on the bone of your nose and less on your sinuses. Iโd also recommend swapping the nose pieces for silicone ones (the place you get them should be able to do that). If your rx is heavy, you might even consider getting high index lenses, theyโre about 33% lighter than most other lenses.
When cleaning the glasses, please do not use alcohol wipes! No alcohol wipes, windex, glass cleaners, harsh cleaners. They will eat away at both coatings and lenses! Even one time use lens wipes arenโt really good either because they are made out of paper and that will scratch the lenses. The best results Iโve gotten are with a cleaning spray and microfiber cloth (the ones designed for glasses). You can also use mild hand soap and water plus the microfiber cloth. The best, best thing to do is rinse them off with just water first, dry with microfiber cloth, then spray with lens cleaner and wipe again. Doing that will get off any grit on the lenses and keep it from being scratched. When wiping them down, donโt be afraid to press a little and maybe try to use your fingernail (protected by the cloth) to get into the edges. Lots of times dead skin and oils accumulate there, so when you go to wipe them, sometimes you pick up that and just drag it across the lens.
The microfiber cloths can be washed too in a washing machine. Just do not use bleach or fabric softener on them!
Other than that, yeah, daily cleanings are a side effect of bad vision.
Sorry I just saw this! I'm going to have to look into that- a little washy thing for my glasses sounds absolutely delightful.
Thankyou so much!!

No prob! Also, the little box YanishaDrake is talking about might be a type of Sonic Cleaner. We use it in optical to deep clean glasses (usually removing the lenses first). But Iโve seen one circulating on Temu and TikTok, itโs smaller than ours, does look sort of like a glasses case and it vibrates at high speeds to loosen dirt.
No troubles, sometimes pings get missed or accidentally clicked away, it happens =D
No, def not a Sonic Cleaner, everything is done manually. I will pester my mom again for what this is exactly and where she got it when Iยดm at her place again, but that might still be a while.

Oh, thatโs different! Definitely tag me when you find out, Iโm curious!
