Please share your analyses, theories, favourite new character, angst, or just gush over how gorgeous everyone looks this season.
I tried really hard to get into this show, because I loved the original What We Do In The Shadows (I love the show too!) but I just couldn't get into the characters in this one. I'm glad others are enjoying it though!
You probably already heard that you should give it at least four episodes. The first three only introduce the characters and there are lot of them, more joining in episode four. But apart from the kind of humour, the camp, and the queerness, WWDITS and OFMD don't have much in common. OFMD is a rom-com and follows strong character arcs while WWDITS is more episodic and there isn't that much character development. And OFMD is extremely fast-paced and dense. Not that well-suited for casual viewing for example.
I wasn't sold at all in the first episode but my husband and I ended up absolutely hooked. I can't believe how much I love it, the character development has been surprisingly good and I really love the relationships and how they're portrayed.
I had so many moments this season that I wanted to just skip to the end of the episode - not because I wasn't enjoying it, but because the tension was so overwhelming and I just wanted resolution, lol. I'm equal parts excited for the next season and absolutely dreading things shifting from how this season ended since it was so wholesome.

I can't imagine season 3 being anything but wholesome. If we get one. Let's keep fighting. 😉
Glad I found this thread!
Came into the show as a long-time fan of Taika and his work (Reservation Dogs is one of my favorite shows ever), was vaguely familiar with Rhys because of Flight of the Conchords, hadn't realized until OFMD they were longtime besties, which made me happy as hell. Once I slogged through the first few episodes, I fell in love with all of them. Jim (and by extension, Vico themself) latched onto my heart and has not let go, and besides the obvious loving of Stede and Ed, I loved Jim and Olu's relationship, and what it became in Season 2 as they became their little polycule. The day we found out HBO was not picking it up for the third season I cried like I was losing family. I always felt like anyone could find a little piece of themselves in every character.
They need to give them their third season. I know it's going to be a difficult one, just given the nature of piracy and what I know of the actual history of Ed Teach and Stede Bonnet, but I know it can be wholesome up until the inevitable end. Just give us that! That cast, those amazing humans, deserve it so much for what they've given us already. They deserve to see this out.
Now I'm going to go watch the video of Vico teaching Rhys how to say "Puerto Rico" properly for another 50 times.
I can't say I am a fan of Taika. His movies are a hit and miss for me. I have a crush on him for ages, though. 😉 I didn't know anything about the show apart from the trailer. Since Taika does only very small parts in other people's projects I only expected him to be in one or two episodes. And I didn't expect him to act as well as he did. They fooled me with Vico's disguise. I didn't recognise them until the end of the first episode.
The cancellation was a shock. I expected it after season 1. But after the success of the second I was convinced they get the third. I don't think you need to worry about the actual history. They diverged so far in the show already I can't imagine they will not grow old together. We need a third season because Stede still hasn't figured his shit out. He makes the same mistakes again. And I need a third season because I have never seen such a relatable autistic character on TV before.
Definitely give Reservation Dogs a watch, it's SO good, and easily his best work. It's got those Taika touches, but it's portrayal of rez life is absolutely spot on, and it's just so meaningful that he was so adamant on authentic casting, which I'm so glad is becoming a thing people are insisting on.
I'm not sure how much he actually wrote on the show or if it's more like attaching his name to it to support the project.
I mean, like most series, there was a writer's room, but he was in that room. I think his involvement can't be understated, because he was the one with the pull to be able make things like an all-Native writer's room and largely unknown Indigenous actors happen. It always takes people with more pull to make things happen. Look at the movie CODA. They were going to cast hearing actors to play the father and brother until Marlee Matlin threatened to walk off the project if they did. It took someone with a name and some pull to make them change course and cast authentically.
