I am in a pretty sticky situation with my health and my state doesnt have temporary disability and so I was thinking of doing some kind of funding to help me get through the next few months of not being able to work. I was wondering if anyone here has done anything like this before and if so how the experience was for them and what sites anyone had experiences with. I am not asking for anyone reading this to help me out with anything other than information. Please dont judge, and thanks in advance
Desperately trying to Collect All Minions
My sister uses gofundme but they take a hefty % of whats raised as their fee.
She uses it because it's better known/trusted. They make sure a fund raising is valid and if anything shady seems like it's going on they investigate and either restore or revoke the fundraiser. If it's revoked they refund the backers which is where I think the trust the name provides is why people use it. I know there's other platforms with lower take %, but I do forget their names.
When describing the issue a through but precise explanation is best. I myself poke around at some of the ones people I know share. If there's too little info I get dubious, too much info and nobody reads why help is wanted.
Purely for example:
Say there's a fundraiser for a kid recently diagnosed for cancer. Would you help if the blurb was just "Kid is 2. Got sick. Need bill help for travel."
Or one where they describe for 4 paragraphs how they figured it out because the kid fell on a toy, but never explained where help is wanted?
Or one that reads:
Recently we've been diagnosed with having illness. This came after child had a fall while playing with toys and the doctor noticed an odd bruise and ran tests. Due to this we need to have more tests done out of state. Because this is a critical time for the family we're asking for help to get gas and lodging to get to those other tests and work on a plan to treat this.
These are things to think of when you draft something up.
Though may I ask have you checked all possible community help outlets? Where I'm from they'd have you believe DSHS is the "only" help out there. But its not. Check in with local non profit places. Some churches even help with a one time fund (not much but sometimes a full month of rent). I actually work for Goodwill and I urge you to reach out to your local office that provides help, there's many programs funded by that pesky "round up" we always ask to do. I urge you strongly to check and do what you can to ease your burden of not working.
FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.
hey! yeah, i've used gofundme a couple of times in the past year during my unemployment. definitely seconding all the advice from kore! having a good description plus a breakdown of costs helps a lot--how much do you need for rent, bills, medication, etc? some people also like to see Proof, so you can offer to have that available upon request--making sure to black out important personal details of course. i never had anyone personally ask, but i know for some people, even offering that helps.
i advertised it mainly on tumblr and was lucky for friends to donate some, but if you're active on any social media i recommend crossposting get some visibility. luckily i had my roommates to provide for the majority of our costs so i'm afraid i don't have the most personal experience in getting money in, but i can offer advice on saving all the money you can.
it sounds like you're in the US, so apply for SNAP benefits! its easier to get on than you might think, and even if you don't get the full amount available for your situation, anything helps. there's also likely food pantries near you as well. i didn't get the chance to use any personally since i didn't have access to a car, but they're absolutely a viable option.
for whatever bills you might have, call and see if there's anything that they can do to reduce the price. i had my phone bill on a 2x monthly payment plan, and i previously worked for a home/auto insurance company and definitely recommend asking to do a policy review. we also had our apartment allow payment plans on our rent.
i'm also not sure of what the exact details of your situation are, but if you're not already, shop around using goodrx and blink health to make sure you're saving the most on your medications. if you have insurance, great! different pharmacies may charge more or less for your meds.
those are all i can think of for now, but let me know if you have any questions! i wish you best of luck!! ;;o;;
I tried gofundme ages back. I didnt get enough and they took a %. You're reliant on your ability to share and get people to donate. Good for big things like an animal shelter or funeral. I used cash app recently. It's good. I provided proof of needing money (bank account) proof of what I need the money for (RX waiting for pickup with estimated cost) and posted on social media. It really helps if you have any evidence that you need the donations. It sounds like what you need is unemployment.
