Whenever I play fishing it always feels like there's no rhyme or reason to the hints - it'll say I'm getting close on the second to last guess, but when I click a square directly next to the one I just hit it says I was really far away. What do the hints actually mean? Is it about a certain radius around the spot or is it dependent on the direction you're moving?

Apparently in order to win, you need to choose the exact correct pixel link that contains the treasure, not just being in the right area for it. So it's nearly impossible to actually win, I only personally know of one person who has won it but they are no longer active here.

The hints are supposed to be helpful, but because you're looking for a single pixel they're not really. I feel like you're probably better off just clicking randomly and hope that you'll maybe be lucky some day. Because right now the only way to win is with some serious luck.
