Unsearchable CWs in directory (suggested fix inside)

Hi! I'm sorry to bother you, I spent a decent amount of time putting together this proposal for a "bug" I found within the directory. I list below affected areas as well as explanation and some fix suggestions. I think this issue may have existed for a very long time and I'm hoping you can help me get some visibility to to get this fixed ^^
Problem: Items that are part of sub categories within the directory are unsearchable when looking up items by category.
Diagnosis: Sub categories have a layer expectation but while the description of the category could be something like "Tops (including jackets, sweaters, and dresses)" it would only show items flagged as category "Tops (including jackets, sweaters, and dresses)" but not items with categories jackets, sweaters & dresses alone. These categories are searchable thru the address bar by changing the category number however this is not a feasible thing for users. I suspect this problem has likely existed since the directory was created or when the new pricing was introduced but it has definitely been around a while and while it was never actually reported, the problem was noticed but myself and likely other users couldn't figure out why certain items didn't show up when searching through categories.
Solution: Collapse sub-categories to show up under their parents.
Jewelry

Unstructured confusing realizations while discovering
While trying to locate an item through the directory I noticed that certain search categories are missing, well, ok so far I found 1
For an example I'll say I want to search this item This is a companion under the shoulder layer In the directory it is in the shoulder layer, however the category for the item is Companion in arms/on leash.
Looking up by shoulder, it shows up. Looking up by companion it does not show up.
The reason for this is because Companion in arms/on leash seems to be it's own category (independent of just companion) meaning any item under that can't be searched through companion alone. That being said while I have discovered this issue it begs to reason there could be other categories of items that fall thru the cracks when narrowing down your search by category.
[edit] Small edit; Flying companions don't show up either as they are classed as "flying" and not searchable by companion alone.
[edit] Alright so I believe the problem might actually have something to do with how the new submission system was implemented. Old items were originally categorized a lot more broadly so they are in a basic category, a yellow star necklace would just show up under jewelry which is search thru the directory where as a new star necklace would be classed specifically as a necklace and would only show up when "neck" layer is searched but "necklace" category can not be searched

HUH. This is really interesting, and I'm surprised no one's noticed it (or at least said something) -- it definitely didn't get caught in testing! I wonder if it's just because most people are searching by layer?
I'll definitely bring it up to Keith. I can't imagine it will be high on the priority list, but hopefully it will be something easy to fix - the fact that it's already on new Subeta definitely helps!
Haha yea it's crazy right? I'm not entirely sure how long it's been like this but I always knew going thru the directory that some things seemed to go missing if I tried to search by category but it was actually the more recent companions coming out (my kitties, emyon's scarf for example) I noticed that if I looked for them under companions they never showed up and it never occurred to me the same thing was happening for every single category too.
For collapsing I think the fix could be as easy as including the sub-categories in the query to get their parents which wouldn't require any extra work outside of the sql statement. What might take more time I think is deleting the empty categories that have nothing, depending on how it's done, the list might need to shift once they are removed which would be extra work on his part.
