This is the code I have to keep the item in the top-left corner; is there some code to add that keeps it from opening in a new tab?

.floating_item {border:2px solid orangered; position:absolute !important; left:5px !important; top:5px !important;}

input[value="Spin again!"] {position:absolute !important; left:15px !important; top:155px !important; }

I don't think it's actually intentional. Programmers are looking into it according to 's post on the bug report thread for it

I would recommend opening the floating item itself into a new tab if you can so it doesn't redirect the tab you're using. It's not as convenient, but less obstructive than having it redirect your whole page
