First day back on Subeta and what do I do? Throw my first pet into the Rift. And now the Rift owns her... RIP Arilette. But that's okay, I made another Popoko named Ariette to cure my grief.

Side note: Is there a way I can remove Arilette from my pet slots? It says I have two pets when the Rift NPC owns Arilette and I do not. Is this intentional?

Your pet will return from the rift, I think within 2 or 3 days!

Oh! Are you sure? When I looked it up it said the Rift can turn your pet Riftborn OR suck your pet into the Rift forever... how do I know which one?

Yep your pet will come back to you! It'll either be a riftborn colored pet or a rift experiment, you won't know what it looks like until it comes back. :)

Omg that's so cool! Thank you for clearing that up! I renamed my second Popoko to Bruneta so she could be her own individual pet. I can't wait to see her sister when she comes back...

if your pet has a riftborn colour it will change to that, you can check here to see what rift pets are available. If your pet species does not have a rift form, it will turn into a rift experiment.
