I swear I will never understand how to get images to work with the code. All I get is either a broken image icon or "(invalid img)" . SO I was wondering if someone could tell me how to make the links for images / gifs to work on your profile every time.

The link has to end with the image format, like .jpg or .png That link will get you to a website that has the image, you need the direct link: https://media1.tenor.com/images/3ed68937b88838fbf3383ce974734edd/tenor.gif

To get it just right click and pick this option:
