Ok so what is the real deal regarding foreign words in CW names? It seems that the rules regarding these are not being applied consistently or fairly. Stuff that was submitted in the same format has been denied for the words being too "foreign" when a lot of times it is simply the romanized version of a Japanese word. And if foreign words are such a big issue, why allow them in pet and shop names too? People aren't dumb, they can use Google Translate and as long as the word isn't offensive, I fail to see what the big deal is.
I was wondering the same thing....

There are lots of foreign words used in many places and items on site (both cws & non-cws). I understand not wanting people full speaking different languages on the forums (hard to moderate convos when you have to translate everything), and I understand not wanting to use non-roman characters in names (makes sense for consistency and item searching). But if there is going to be a crackdown on romanized foreign words in CWs, will that then transfer over to pets, shops, and other non-cw items?
Also, there may be an allowance for "well known words" or "adopted" words from other languages, but even those might not be know by everyone. So then where is the line and who decides what is acceptable or not? Would it be on a case by case basis? Or would there then be a list of accepted foreign words?
Lots of questions on this topic, glad you brought it up !
This is covered pretty clearly in the CW FAQ (I can't copy and paste right now cause I'm on mobile, but it's in there). Common words are allowed. I admittedly (and even admitted this to a submitter today) have been more lax with it than we should be, and I'm trying to be better. It doesn't matter if you can just Google it. I mean first and foremost, Google translate isn't exactly 100% accurate. But this is, again, a clearly stated rule.
Making a list of "acceptable" words isn't really feasible. So my advice is, use your best judgment. If you have to tell me the translation of the words in your submission notes, then that's a clear flag it isn't commonly used enough to work.
This is not going to be shifting over into pets and the like. That is totally separate and has been okay by the official rules for years now.
[Edit] I wanted to add in that I'm not going to go through thousands of CWs and retroactively change names! So that's not something to worry about.
Okay,, question. How do we know something is a common word and not common word?

[edit] I'm home now, so here is the quote from the FAQ:
Also I did want to defend myself a teensy bit! This post makes it seem like items have been denied left and right due to foreign language in item names. So far, it has been one item. I think the denial I wrote for it was very clear, and also very apologetic about having been lax on this in the past. I explained why this particular situation wouldn't work, as well as quoting the above from the FAQ.
Japanese words have been harder for me because my wife speaks it fluently, and I have been learning myself for several years. I read them and go "yeah i know what that means" and just move on. That is 100% on me, which is why I have no intention on going back to change a bunch of names! But I'm definitely holding myself to be better about it in the future.
Hunted the FAQ down and here it is:
This is definitely a difficult point to talk about, because it is still kinda subjective. Especially for a worldwide accessible site. It is a grey area to be deciding in (imo) and it will be interesting to see what passes and what doesn't.
P.S. "hambok" should be "hanbok" in your original post if you could edit that whenever you have a sec. (Unless there is a "hambok" both google and I don't know about, lol.)
hahah I just edited my post above with that as well, but thank you for finding it for me! Also thanks for correcting my typos. I'll take care of editing that right now!
(I will say, when I wrote that, you should have seen me googling how to spell pate de choux. Silent letters in French is not my strong point, and my google history that day was probably quite entertaining)
- I think what we are trying to understand is what we feel is common might not be common to someone else so where is the middle ground? Like I know what senpai is but a ton of my friends don't. Would that mean items submitted with senpai in the name would not be accepted? Sorry, I'm dumb, please explain this like I'm a child lol.
It's funny you use Senpai as an example cause I had originally written in my previous response that "words like 'kawaii and sakura and senpai' weren't going to stop being accepted, haha, but I took it out. I mean a lot of people know the word senpai just from SENPAI PLEASE NOTICE ME memes, and it definitely is a word more common in colloquial usage these days.
I do not want to go into the details of the name from the aforementioned denial, but it wasn't just a casual Japanese word thrown it - it was multiple words linked together by a conjunction. Conjunctions in other languages do not make sense in English, and it was definitely going to be confusing grammar-wise for anyone reading it in English. This is the sort of thing that isn't really allowed. I hope that helps!
Unless you're mashing cabbage for your "Pâte de choux", you should be googling "Pâte à choux" :) This might be why you had trouble! :D
But seriously, conjunctions absolutely make all the difference.
I BLAME LINDSEY SHE SPELLED IT FOR ME.
I support and the current policy as written. No matter how finely the policy is written, judgement will be required. I trust hers and don't think there's been a problem.
No offence but you aren’t even involved in CWs so you have absolutely no idea the problems many of us have been having.
Site Feedback is not for the pleasure of specific users, it is for staff. It is not private, it is public. Anyone can answer. Staff and the site owner can make up their own mind as to the value of anything any user who posts here might say.
I have seen CW creators attack staff unnecessarily on other issues. Nothing posted here has changed my mind.
I want to reiterate that this thread is making it seem like I've denied dozens of items due to this issue. It still remains just one single item. I'm a bit baffled at the response here, only because it truly doesn't seem to be a major issue.
If you have an issue with it personally, please submit a ticket and I'll be glad to review it with you! If you have some specific examples in mind, I would love to hear them!

Also, just a friendly reminder that anyone is allowed to post on a feedback thread. The forums are public and we welcome responses from every user. If you want to discuss an issue privately, the best place to do it is via a ticket :)
I’m sorry but many of us are thinking of leavings cws because of recent issues that have happened, and being told by a user who isn’t even involved in cws at all, that we “attack” staff does nothing to fix these issues.
I don’t have time to make a ticket atm, and tbh why should we when if we say something wrong our accounts could be in jeopardy? I like many am going to have to consider whether or not to stay in cws once my current things are on site because of the recent events.
CW creators talk, a LOT. And many of us are upset but too afraid of you and staff to make tickets and raise our issues because we don’t want to lose our accounts.
This is getting off-topic, but I will say that accounts won't be frozen from you simply starting a ticket to discuss things. I can't fix anything if no one brings me any feedback.
I'm so lost here but I think the rules have always been clear about what is and isn't okay regarding foreign words (common words okay, phrases and uncommon words not generally okay).
I also have no idea what this talk of everyone thinking of leaving CWs is...a lot of us are not in whatever conversation that is and have no idea what the supposed drama/issues are that are making people afraid or whatever. I've been pretty happy with most staff interactions over this last several months and I think has done a really great job with transparency and helping with any issues that have cropped up. I've felt a lot better about CWs since the changeover happened and I know quite a few other releasers who have been too so I'm not sure what's going on with what must be off-site clique conversations, but if the community isn't sharing issues and discussion as a whole somewhere accessible, it's hard to have any kind of respectful, adult conversation about it.
Please refer to this thread for an update regarding this issue!
