I just found out my slumlord is selling the building due to health reasons. He’s showing my unit abs my brothers unit (because he said we’re cleanly). The realtor is his friend. They’re coming over Monday around 1-2pm.

I’m trying to process this. My building is in such disrepair, I know it will take awhile to sell, unless someone from Southern Ontario or a huge name will snatch up this building. Thing is... once this shit hole is sold, the new owner can do what they want. Like raise the rent to a very unaffordable price.

I’m crying because I have no where to go. I don’t want to go back to live with my parents because I have my reasons. I’m scared I’ll lose my freedom, the self-work I’ve done and everything I have. I also don’t have any friends, so that’s not an option. Also, since the pandemic began, all the landlords in my city have tripled the price of rent. A 350sq (I wouldn’t want to live in a closet tbh) apartment is $950

I'm really sorry :( I know the rental situation in Ontario is absolutely ridiculous right now (I just moved away from Southern Ontario not long ago and I'm a renter). However, are you on a lease? Are you on month to month? If another landlord is buying the building, I don't think they can just do whatever they want such as raise the rents... your rental agreement should just transfer over to the new landlord afaik. I've lived under a landlord who sold the building to another landlord, several times. I know they can charge basically whatever they want to new people moving in, and they can raise your rent annually the allowed amount, but I don't think they are allowed to just charge whatever they want to people who are already living there on an existing agreement. A lot of slumlords will try to illegally get the old tenants out so they can raise the rent specifically for that reason, the LTB would be on your side in that case though. Please feel free to reach out to me if they try to do anything, 'cause I've done a LOT of reading about tenant rights in Ontario due to dealing with many slumlords myself.

Rentals all over without any protections are going out of control. The state next to me (I live on the border of two states) is outrageous! A couple years ago a house could be rented for 800-900 a month for a 2 bed 2 bath with small yard... Now those same houses are going for 2.5k... Apartments aren't much better, the cheapest 3 bed is still 1.2k. I'm on the side that has rent protections so it can only raise x amount and not during a active lease, so its only raised at lease renew or when someone moves out. But since the other state has no boundaries for rent hikes its forcing their people over to this side since they can still commute to work that way. Its gonna be a real shit show all over with rents.

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.

Oh, honey. I'm so sorry! I hope you can find a good place to live that doesn't cost so much. I don't know where you live for sure, but I do know that rent is going up everywhere. It seems the good places are harder to find nowadays. There are way too many slumlords. We all know that people are quick to try to "earn" a dishonest buck. It makes me sick, frankly. I wish people weren't such jerks to each other when it comes to housing.

By the way, I recently heard that a friend of mine got kicked out of his apartment for reporting the landlady. The building is infested with bedbugs and he reported it, trying to get someone to do something about them. We used to live there, too, but we moved out and we are so glad we did. We lived there before the problem got bad. We haven't had any problems in our new complex with the creepy crawlies, thankfully.
