Gunter Battle Question

So don't judge me, but I am only just getting around to getting Gunter as a battle challenger. Of course, my timing is terrible since there's that outstanding NPC plot involving him. It says he does not want to talk. Am I out of luck?
Are your pets at 0 HP? And have you been refreshing? The secret battle challengers are usually random so you might have to refresh a bit but as long as you meet the requirements, it should still trigger.

My active pet has 0 HP and I've refreshed several times. I'll just keep refreshing I guess?
According to the news comments on the release post multiple pets have to be at 0 HP. None of the posts have an exact number (though it looks like most people dropped ALL pets to 0) but did confirm there's a cap to how many it needs to be
It might also be a percentage of your pets, or a large fixed amount because I had to do fifteen pets and I know some users have less total pets than that.
From what I remember, I believe if you have fewer than a certain amount of pets (not sure what the exact cutoff number is), then you will need to get all of your pets down to 0 HP. If you have a large amount of pets (like 60+) then at some point it switches to becoming a percentage of your pets to where you would need like 15 or so of them to have 0 HP.
When I unlocked him during the initial release, I believe I had like 3 or 4 pets on my account and I needed to get all of them to 0 HP for it to work because I had so few of them.
So I thought I had unlocked this challenger already, but turns out I hadn't! A few hours ago I just put all 32 of my pets in the Rathskeller Inn, and a few minutes ago I started running them through Battle Quests without healing them. Opened the SAI HQ page in a separate tab and every time one pet ran out of HP, I would refresh the SAI HQ tab a few times. If I didn't see the event, I'd use another pet and attempt another Battle Quest.
I got the event once 10 of my pets had 0 HP. So I can confirm that you still can get Gunter as a challenger. As far as how many pets need to be out of HP, I'm not entirely sure if it's 10 for everyone, or a third(ish) of however many pets you have. (I hope it's the former.) It definitely doesn't need to be all of your pets, if you have more than 10.
