That just tell if the user has a gold account or not. It doesn't show online status
one other way is to check if they have trades up, then click on the trade and it will show you some information.
But even if they are online doesn't mean they are available.

if they're recent posts/topics link is available or if you are willing to play URL games with yours, you can see if they are actively posting somewhere. This is a hint, but they could sometimes be like me and pop in and out so they might not be around at any specific time but more generally 'around'.
