I used to run a lot, stopped when I got a lingering case of the flu and then couldn't get back up to speed so I just stopped. Now I'm trying to get back into exercising but working back up to my previous level of running is just so...boring. Does anyone have any fun, at home workouts or exercises they can recommend?

I hate exercising. I'm losing weight by just eating less and skipping a meal here and there - intermittent fasting. I really enjoy when I go on walks, at least I used to, but depression makes it really difficult to get up and do it sometimes. My main "workout" lately has been mowing the grass and weed-whacking lol.

I really like circuit training, or high intensity interval training, as an alternative to a running day. I do the T25 workouts once or twice a week, they have a good variety of different things, so some for legs, upper body, abs etc. and also speed circuits. I think they complement things like running well because they build up those 'fast twitch' muscle fibres, but then you also have the strength work for toning. My sister has just started getting into pilates and she really likes that, for getting more flexible and strong but it has a calmer pace to it. Any exercise where you get to lie down a lot is a bonus in my book :')

Hiking, hands down, is my favorite exercise. Specifically, hiking with dogs! I lost 84 lbs and got into the best shape of my life doing this (in addition to healthy vegan eating with a focus on leafy greens -- kale yeah!) I simply cannot imagine hiking without at least one dog by my side, though. For me it's the adventure and time spent with the pupsters that makes it so enjoyable... the fact that it's also an excellent workout is just an added bonus.

Do you run indoors or outdoors? Maybe switching it up would be interesting?

  • Cassey Ho and Chloe Ting for at-home workouts.
  • Do you have access to a pool somewhere? Swimming is a great workout and is pretty fun!
  • Not at home, but I like playing tennis, biking, or hiking with friends.
  • Exercise for overall wellness, not just physical fitness is underrated. It’s so important for mental health! I don’t think enough people think about things like heart health either, and tend to focus too much on physical aesthetics. (- I notice you haven’t mentioned weight loss, just exercise. If it’s relevant, I always lose weight/inches on Whole30.)

I love swimming, but the local pool is being renovated. To try something different, I took up a dance fitness class. I have shit hand-eye coordination, but I ended up really enjoying it. The dance instructor busted her ankle last time though, so idk what to do now.

These are good suggestions! Thanks, everyone! , I used to run inside and zone out until I was done. Now I'm at home and am trying to run outside. Hopefully it will be less bad now that it's less hot. Running is super fun once you can run 3 miles reliably. Right now my scale weight is fine but I have absolutely no muscle anymore so I'm trying to build some definition again. I'm going to try Chloe Ting! That's a great idea, I think I'll try it next weekend. Taking the dog with me should make it a lot more fun.

I love hiking with my brother whenever I go out of state to visit him, so I'd say that's my favorite, but I still haven't pushed myself to go alone much. I use a treadmill and usually if I'm tired I'll go for a 15 to 30 minute walk and I try to hop on the treadmill daily. If I have energy I'll do high intensity interval workouts and implement some strength training exercises.

For full exercises, leg/lower body I'll do squats or lunges, ballerina leg lifts. For upper body I'll bicep curls/shoulder press, (modified) push-ups, and if I'm working specifically on my triceps I'll do (modified) diamond push-ups, triceps extensions, and triceps dip using a folding chair. For my core I do planks, crunches using my desk chair (it folds and I put my torso on it), annnnd dead bugs. That last one I think is an underrated core workout that's super easy.

Chloe Ting has been the most successful for me thus far. She has her workout plans nicely laid out. Each vid is like 10-20 minutes and there's 2-4 vids per workout. It's just a nice bit of motivation when you finish a workout and move on to the next!

I would really like to get into jogging again. I love jogging outside but I'm just not a fan of people staring at you while you're on your run.
