Remember when Discord was becoming popular and everyone was moving away from Skype? And everyone was saying Discord would be the next big thing? Doesn't seem like more people have Discord these days. Is there another chat service everyone's using that I'm not aware of? 👀
Idk what you're doing but Discord's worked for me for years. Skype's long dead.

Discord is consistently where it's at. Best chat program I've ever used.
It depends on what your needs are. I’ve used Skype, WhatsApp, Slack, and KakaoTalk for various situations. It seems like everyone is video chatting lately through Zoom and Google because of the pandemic. Discord seems pretty popular with a lot of online communities tbh. I also mainly use these programs to talk to people I know in some capacity.

Discord is great for video chatting and movie sharing. You can use their built in streaming software to stream your whole screen (no sound) or an individual window (with sound), and there is no lag like there is with a lot of streaming services. So, in the absence of rabbit -- which was a popular long distance movie sharing site -- discord is amazing for both communication and dates and stuff.
I've used Skype -- it's gotten so bad though I can hardly imagine going back, and I don't like that I can't switch devices and get my chat history back. Slack is fine, I used that for a few months before switching to discord full time. Whatever it is google does doesn't compare, and Zoom Definitely doesn't -- I've been having to use it for school and it is a nightmare, in my personal opinion.
I thought WhatsApp was a dating app? And I've never heard of KakaoTalk. How do you like them? (Assuming WhatsApp isn't a dating service.)
WhatsApp is a mobile messaging app. I have it on my phone as well mostly just to text friends though, I don't personally use the calling function of it even though it's available. It's popular in non-US countries because most countries charge per text and WhatsApp can just be used for texting as long as you have data. Taiwan, for instance, you pay a lump sum per month for eat until full( what they call unlimited data) on most phone plans, but the texting is roughly about 5-10 cents per text in Taiwan currency usually.
Skype is still used, just not as much. My thesis interview in 2018 for my masters thesis from NYU for my European Studies master was conducted via Skype interview since I had moved out of New York City at that point and was back in California.
And Kakaotalk isn't really used outside of Asia as far as I know. I've heard of KakaoTalk, it's a mobile messaging app that's pretty popular in South Korea, but I haven't really seen it used outside of Japan and Korea though, and I don't personally have it on my phone since it's not popular in Taiwan where all my relatives are.
In my case, I personally use discord, slack, WhatsApp, and Line mostly, with Line mostly just for calling my relatives in Taiwan since neither Zoom nor Skype are popular in Taiwan. I also use WeChat if my parents are in China since they go there sometimes for vacation or business and most apps, slack, discord, twitter, facebook, Line, etc.. are all blocked in China. WeChat is a China owned app though.
Ooooh thanks for the information! I've heard of Line, I had that to talk to my niece for awhile. And yeah, I never said Skype wasn't still used -- as chat program used for businesses, it's probably still really good, but I mean for general talking and hanging out with friends it's not very user friendly, but that's just my personal opinion.
I've heard of people doing job interviews via Skype, it's really interesting you did your thesis interview using it as well! Did it go well?
I don't even use Discord because my computer is old and stupid and won't run it, but even I know that's where everyone is at right now.
Please Subeta don't move all your official communication over there, I can't see it
I got my masters from NYU in European Studies so I guess it did. It was a pretty short interview, about 30-40 minutes or so of just my advisor and one other history professor that I selected from the history department. And yeah, Skype is still used for conference meetings and job interviews in some businesses, but it is true that as a group hangout, that's mostly shifted to either discord or slack for that pretty much entirely. Maybe that's since shifted to zoom since the pandemic, but other than helping my mom figure out how to use zoom since she was doing virtual, video tai chi classes on it during the early stages of the pandemic when everyone was under stay home orders, I haven't really used it personally.
I have Line exclusively to talk to my Taiwan relatives since I have aunts and uncles, cousins, etc.. over there. I also use Facebook messenger to sometimes message them, but more or less, calling wise it's mostly through Line calling. Plus, Line has cute stickers, XD.
Subeta used to have an IRC, way, way, back, maybe 2005-2013-ish, but that hasn't actively been in use since most places shifted toward using discord instead. And right now, as far as I know there's only a subeta wide discord.
The browser version and the downloaded version won't work?
That's really awesome! European Studies sounds really interesting. I'm doing my bachelors in comp sci with a specialty in web design and software development right now. Yeah I see a lot of advertisements for skype-for-business, though what my school/job mainly uses is Zoom and Microsoft Teams. I personally feel like Zoom is a little unwieldy for the average end user, but any good piece of software is intuitive so I hope your mom is getting the hang of it! Teams is a little better, but it's a heavy software so you really have to have a good computer for it -- one of my teacher's computers was always burning out and shutting off whenever he tried to use it so classes with him were spotty at best.
Line does have cute stickers, though. I need to redownload it, my phone broke a couple of months ago and I have a new one, but I'm so scattered that it's taken me awhile to even transfer over my app games.
It's been a while since I tried to install it but yeah, like I made an account but it would never work right and let me log in, I don't know. Got annoyed and didn't care enough to figure it out at the time, but my laptop was really struggling with it so I don't think it would handle it even if it hadn't been all glitchy.
Yeah? What's wrong with your laptop? If you describe the problem, maybe I can give you some tips on how to make it run a little better. Shoot me a message maybe and we can troubleshoot.
I don't have any movie sharing needs, most of my own use of these programs has been only to text chat/audio call internationally, or in professional settings. I've never been a fan of video chatting in general (especially in a group) and am just doing it for work/jumping on the pandemic socializing bandwagon with my friends irl.
did a nice job of explaining what WhatsApp and Kakao are. Line is very popular in Korea too. I really like the characters associated with KakaoTalk and Line. The shops dedicated to the merch are so cute.
I'd rather just communicate in-person, through phone calls, or group text messaging via mobile tbh. I'm definitely feeling burnout from working/socializing from home, but I'm grateful to be able to stay connected. I even got to attend a wedding via Zoom.
Welcome to Subeta btw! You'll find that Discord is popular with many of the users here.

It's just old and inadequate at this point (it was purchased as refurbished government equipment five years ago, so it was already basic and used then lol). I really appreciate the offer but I intend to just replace it when I can't tolerate it anymore.
I'm not a very chatty person anyway so I don't have much use for Discord, I've just noticed mention it a few times lately as a place where Subeta issues are being reported/discussed. Great I guess, as long as really significant staff communication still remains on this site.
Discord for me and has been for many years. Even though Skype got reinstalled by a Windows update for me, soon got rid of that again! Discord isn't without its issues, but a better experience for me than Skype ever was.
I despise skype! It feels like it hasn't been truly updated since 2010; constantly crashing, super low-quality video and audio even when both parties are on super good internet. I exclusively use Discord now since a friend recommended it to me a few years ago. Now I'm reluctant to talk to people who say they use only Skype.
My name is Kira/Erik. I'm Nonbinary, and my pronouns are They/Ze. [flower=MusicEmo]
I can't even remember the last time I used Skype. Everyone on my list moved to Discord, so that's where I went.
I forgot skype was still going until I saw this thread, actually. Last I heard of it, around when Discord was getting popular, was that they banned or were going to ban swearing?
User since 2012, still not sure what I'm doing. [tot=Sample] // [flower=Sample]
