I really enjoyed Doki doki Literature club, Pony Island, and Undertale (Undertale is not really horror), as well as creepypastas.
I really enjoy this style of horror. I love horror where it plays with your mind, or there's an element of 4th wall breaking. Are there any other movies / games / books like these? Particularly Doki Doki Literature club.
Others I enjoy are HP Lovecraft, The Shining, Shutter Island. I am also going to include Fight Club even though it's not horror because SPOILER (click to toggle)
of the heavily foreshadowed moment where he learns that he is the same person as the fight club boss.
You can take one man's trash to another man's treasure but you can't make him drink it
Musing Query: Have you ever heard the tragedy of Darth Plagueis the wise?
The way to a bad friend´s is crooked and far, though he lives by the road But the paths lie direct to a good friend´s, though he is far away.
Have you seen/played 'Bandersnatch' on Netflix? It's an interactive film set in the Black Mirror universe, where you 'play' by making decisions for the main character. The decisions vary from choosing which cereal he eats in the morning, to... much more drastic decisions, lol. It deals with time loops and there are multiple endings you can get. I would say it's pretty psychological, with certain scenes where it does break the fourth wall :)
I'm interested to see if anyone else has any suggestions! I really enjoy these kinds stories, too.
Thank you for the suggestion! That was really cool. It really went down the 'rabbit' hole, lol. I would love for them to do more of this format.

Little Nightmares (game) is... creepy. :P
Anything by Stephen King can kind of scratch that itch, though Tommyknockers is my favorite. (Books, not necessarily films!)
House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielewski really messed me up. I didn't even finish it; it's definitely one of those psychological creepy, make your skin crawl kinda books that I highly recommend!
I very heavily recommend the Netflix show The Haunting of Hill House. It's absolutely incredible -- there's the straightforward horror themes, but there are so many incredibly nuanced themes throughout the whole thing I could hardly wait for the next episode til the thing was over. I was enthused throughout the whole thing, and I watch a lot of horror/psychological thrillers and it's hard to catch my attention these days.
A few other offhand fun ones are The Others, The Taking of Deborah Logan, and -- hm -- there are some really good Blumhouse horrors. The Visit, The Invisible Man, Us, Get Out, Happy Death Day (and the sequel), Hush, and the version of Amityville Horror they did -- Amityville: The Awakening with Bella Thorne as the lead girl.
If you're a Silence Of the Lambs fan, I highly recommend the Netflix series Hannibal. It's a quick 3 seasons that are effortless to watch. It'll have you guessing and on your toes!
Also, Pan's Labyrinth is frickin gooooodddd. It's so worth to watch in Spanish, by the end of the movie I felt like it was in English by how immersed I was.
Also also, Hereditary messed me up inside. I don't have anything to compare it to. It's the most intense, suspenseful, heavy horror film I've ever seen.

As for movies: El Maquinista had a feeling similar to Fight Club. I wouldn't say it's as good, but it's not bad, either. When it comes to scarier stuff, I love Jacob's Ladder, but it's a bit more complicated. It doesn't break the 4th wall, but it's up to you to figure out what's going on and what is real (so, a bit similar to already mentioned movies, but in this one there is no final answer). There's also Romero's Martin, about a teenager who is, or isn't, a vampire – more drama than horror, I would say. As for Lovecraft, The Void was inspired by his works, I guess, but again – not a bad movie, but also not great, just something you might check out when you run out of better things.
There’s Donnie Darko, though that movie isn’t horror per say. It’s a cult classic but, it’s classified as a psychological thriller genre wise. I was going to recommend Jacob’s Ladder, but someone beat me to it.
Also, the movie for Stephen Kings’s novella 1922 is pretty dang good too if you’d be up for watching another Stephen King based movie.
The German show on Netflix, Dark, is amazingly twisting and turning and scary and heartbreaking. I still can't stop thinking about it weeks after watching the finale.
The Machinist is probably my favorite psychological thriller. There's also a REALLY good French movie, the English title is something like "He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not" which has an AMAZING twist and blew my mind at 16.
For 4th wall breaking games One Shot is fantastic, but it's not scary. Anatomy is a great horror game that does some 4th wall breaking and will make you nervous about your own house. As for psychological horror, I would recommend Layers of Fear.
I recently watched The Flower of Evil, Korean drama. it's mostly psychological.
The main guy managed to make my blood freeze. I binge-watched it because i couldn't stop myself...

The beginning especially was intense, then it mellowed down a bit. The ending... was just there and the drama should have been longer ;p
I really have to update my blog ObscureJourney and my review site BeingObscure. French speakers can read my reviews here.
Black Mirror and Paranoia Agent.
I started reading House of Leaves very recently. Horror, but not 4th wall so much as it is meta. The book itself messes with the reader; some of the pages you even have to hold up to a mirror in order to read. You can check out some pictures online to see what I mean

People have recommended Haunting of Hill House which was my first thought also. I recently played a game on Switch called Goetia and liked it. Spooky puzzle game/mystery.
Midsommar is my faaavorite horror movie and definitely unique and more psychological than traditional horror films. The cinematography is absolutely beautiful, which is rare for a horror movie, but still helps to build suspense. My fiance and I were so stressed out during the entire movie - in the best way possible. I definitely recommend checking it out!

So neither of these are horror, but the psychological aspect is great mind twister.
I'll mention A Clockwork Orange first as it's more well known so there's a better chance of anyone having already seen it or knowing about the plot.
My favorite mindfuck movie is Sucker Punch. There's been a lot of fan theories to explain the events of the film. It's about a girl who is institutionalized in a mental hospital, but it takes her through her mind between the hospital, a brothel and a battle with nazi zombies and robots and... It sounds like a disaster but it's wonderful and the very beginning is gut kick alone.
I see Donnie Darko was already mentioned and I second that suggestion!

I'm thinking of ending things is on Netflix and it was pretty unsettling to watch lol. a really good psychological movie that you have to think about even after you've watched it!
Can't talk about horror games without mentioning the old RPG-style games: Ib, Witch's House, Mad Father. Probably Ao Oni, but I haven't played this one. For newer games, there's Sally Face, Confess My Love (this one's free on Steam), Fran Bow, Lucid9. There's also Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni and Umineko No Naku Koro Ni, both VNs that can get very dark. And try out Hatoful Boyfriend too (it's a dating sim with pigeons, but trust me on this one).
For movies, maybe Occulus?
For books, there's this manga called Liar Game. Psychological and will make you think, but probably not so much horror as much as it is a suspense/thriller.
