I read somewhere (I don't remember where) that you can make a gear gender steamwork pet from scratch but last time I made a steamwork pet I don't recall having that option? Is that still a thing or did I read something wrong?

IIrc, the Steamwork pets are genderless but... I'm kinda "Eh" about the whole "nonbinary = robotic" thing so...

They don't start out as genderless. My memory is god awful, but I think I had to pick (or was it my active pet?) when the schematic was done and that was it.

It's not an option, it depends on how you make the pet. If you make a brand new steamwork pet, it will be "born" with the gear gender. If you change an existing pet into the steamwork color, it will keep whatever gender it had before.
