This might be a really stupid questions, but I have no clue how to find what I'm looking for in the regular restocking shops. Where can you buy a background for your human avatar? Mine looks so ... plain and white and I have no clue where to look for one.

There's really no set place or shop that you can find backdrops. They're all over the place! The easiest thing I can direct you to is searching through Subetalodge with the "backdrop" layer selected. Here you go

There's gonna be a lot to sort through though! It might be easier if you list off a couple things you're looking for, like location, mood, or colors, and I (or another user) can give you some suggestions of the top of my head.

you can also search through items you don't own by unchecking the "only show items you own" box in the wardrobe. from there you can filter by layer, exclude or include custom wearables, and search keywords (though most wearables, especially backdrops, have names that aren't necessarily reflective of what they actually look like when worn). this makes it easy to preview lots of items at once.

when you hover over items you don't own, a link to the shop search will appear and allow you to buy the item from user shops, npc shops if available, or sometimes tell you it can be found in a special shop; but once you know what items you want, searching them on subetalodge can help you figure out the best way to acquire them.
