National Candy Day – November 4, 2019

I hope your sweet tooth is ready, because November 4 is National Candy Day. These sweet and sour treats have been our favorite snack since childhood.

Whether they’re hard, chewy, fruit flavored or licorice, candy has been a consistent source of happiness and, as we get older, nostalgia.

Candies have a long history of attracting us with their bright colors and delightful flavors. They also come in a variety of fun sizes and shapes.

Candy first came to America in the 18th century from France and Britain. Candy stores were becoming an American staple, especially in the lives of children across the country. Penny candy often became the first thing a child would spend their money on.

In the late 13th century, Middle English first began using the word candy. Borrowed from the Old French cucre candi, it is derived in turn from Persian Qand and Qandi, cane sugar.

Though the preferred candy tends to differ depending on the state, the two highest selling candies in the United States are M&M’s and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups.

Dark chocolate peppermint patties are my favorite. Polish brands tend to be better than the American one though. :D Second one is those pretty giant colorful lollipops :)

I really like Dots! I know they aren't everyone's favorite, but I'm nostalgic for them I tried to depict the different original flavors: Lime, Lemon, Orange, Cherry, and Strawberry Outfit Not Found

I know I make a lot of black HAs but black licorice really is my favorite candy (followed closely by maple sugar candy).

The very earliest candy finds it's origins in Ancient India. Pieces of sugar were produced by boiling down sugarcane juice and enjoyed as "Khanda." Later when the Persians and Greeks 'discovered' sugarcane in India they called it "reeds that produce honey without bees."

In the early days of American candy it was often thought of as a medicine. One example of this was "Rock and Rye" which started in the 1800s. Rock and Rye began in the saloons of early America where customers would add their own rock candy to the shot of rye the bartender would pour, which made it into a drink similar to today Old Fashioned. By the middle of the century the drink-candy combo was so popular and 'effective' that it migrated from the bar to the pharmacy; said to help with ailments such as coughs, colds, asthma, consumption and pneumonia to name just a few. The fact that 'rock and rye' shifted from the bar to the pharmacy helped it survivor even prohibition. To this day in America you can still find pre-made Rock and Rye by the bottle at your local liquor stores.

I'm using the background to represent rock candy because it's the only thing I could find that looks like rock candy.
