Icarus - The Fall of Icarus

The story of Icarus is a popular Grecian myth. As the story goes, Icarus's father Daedalus, a very talented and remarkable craftsman, built the Labyrinth for King Minos to imprison the Minotaur. To escape. Daedalus fashioned two pairs of wings out of wax and feathers for himself and his son. Daedalus tried his wings first, but before trying to escape the island, he warned Icarus not to fly too close to the sun, nor too close to the sea, but to follow his path of flight. Overcome by the giddiness that flying lent him, Icarus soared into the sky, but in the process he came too close to the sun, which due to the heat melted the wax. Icarus kept flapping his wings but soon realized that he had no feathers left and that he was only flapping his bare arms, and so Icarus fell into the sea and drowned.

Bai Suzhen (from 'Legend of the White Snake', a chinese legend, outfit inspired by the Netflix adaption)

The white snake was simply known as the "White Lady" or "White Maiden" in the original tale. The name "Bai Suzhen" was created in a later era. The original story was a story of good and evil, with the Buddhist monk Fahai setting out to save Xu Xian's soul from the white snake spirit, who was depicted as an evil demon. Over the centuries, however, the legend has evolved from a horror tale to a romance story, with Bai Suzhen and Xu Xian being genuinely in love with each other even though their relationship is forbidden by the laws of nature.

She's depicted here with her alternate form, in the garden of Bai mansion.

(I'm aware that it's more leaned towards China, but Japan did a lot of films concerning this legend as well. Plus, I'm super into this series right now and still watching. xD )

Thank you! =) Have a great time in Beijing/Seoul! :D That sounds so exciting!

No worries! I know a lot of cultures share stories and have versions that are based on a common tale. China has such a huge influence on East Asia too. I'm taking a flight to Beijing tonight for a layover and then I'll be in Seoul for two weeks.

Rāma - The Rāmāyaṇa

Rama or Ram, also known as Ramachandra, is a major deity of Hinduism. He is the seventh avatar of the god Vishnu. The Ramayana relates his story. It is one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India, the other being the Mahābhārata. It depicts the duties of relationships, portraying ideal characters like the ideal father, the ideal servant, the ideal brother, the ideal husband and the ideal king. Ramayana was an important influence on later Sanskrit poetry and Hindu life and culture. Like Mahabharata, Ramayana is not just a story: it presents the teachings of ancient Hindu sages in narrative allegory, interspersing philosophical and ethical elements. The characters Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Bharata, Hanuman, and Ravana are all fundamental to the cultural consciousness of the South Asian nations of India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the South-East Asian countries of Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, and Indonesia.

I based the HA on an image I found on google. I loved a music scene in the movie "Swades" where Ram arrives to save his wife Sita. I know the song pretty much by heart and can sing along XD

(Yes I copied the explanation from Wiki because I had no idea how to explain it myself, sorry --")

I present you the Gandharva (गन्धर्व). A Gandharva is a male nature spirit, usually half bird or half horse. They guard the Soma, the favorite drink of the Gods. Besides that, they have extreme talent in music. In Hinduism they are seeing as beautiful warriors.

This particular Gandharva likes to impress ladies with large amounts of Soma and his beautiful feathers. He is also very skilled in playing the harp, so much he has morphed part of his body into one so he can impress the deities everywhere he goes.

Tsukuyomi-no-Mikoto (or Tsukuyomi) is the mythological moon god in Japan (and Shinto mythology). He is unique because the other moon deities are normally portrayed as women.

His story is this:

He was created along with his two other siblings; the three were known as the “three noble children” and Tsukuyomi was the second. When he was created his father (creator) was cleansing himself of his sins (Izanagi-no-Mikoto was his creator) while he was bathing. According to one legend Tsukuyomi came to be when Izanagi cleaned out his right eye.

While living in the heavens Tsukuyomi married the sun goddess, Amaterasu (who was also his sister). One day though he angered her by killing Uke Mochi (the goddess of food) after she made a feast in a manner that Tsukuyomi found disgusting. When Amaterasu found out what he did, she refused to ever look at her husband again. This is the reason why the day and night are never seen together - because every-time Tsukuyomi (the moon) moves toward his wife (the sun), she moves away from him.

In East Asian folklore, foxes are depicted as a familiar spirit possessed of magic powers. These foxes are depicted as mischievous, usually tricking other people, with the ability to disguise themselves as a beautiful woman.

Eurynome - Greek Mythology (mentioned in the Theogeny, a poem by Hesiod)

Eurynome is an Oceanid, born of Oceanus and Tethys (both Titans created by the union of Uranus, the sky god, and Gaia, earth). She is often depicted as a mermaid.

She was Zeus' third wife and the mother of the Charities (Aglaea, Euphrosyne and Thalia), goddesses of grace and beauty - but particularly splendor, joy and good cheer.

Eurynome also is prominent in the myth of Hephaestus, the son born solely of Hera and cast out from Olympus. Eurynome nursed Hephaestus back to health and offered him refuge in her cave.

Aria Quin-Lee - Russia

Kira Shashaska lived a humble life in the forests of Russia. She was not notable in any way. Kira went on to become a very valued member of her school because she studied hard and was a gifted witch. She worked very hard and had the opportunity to teach at the wizarding school in her local community. She was born, lived, and died, and only the people in her direct community ever knew about her. So where did the story come from about Kira? The story is told to reinforce how important everyone is, not only the famous, powerful, courageous, mean, violent, etc. type of people. She is all of us and none of us - we are in her life because we all live anonymously. So why not embrace that anonymity and do the best we can to help those around us and be the best people possible. That is why Kira's story is told.

This HA is Daphne from the Greek myth of Daphne and Apollo captured mid-metamorphosis. Apollo, the Greek god of music, poetry, art, the sun and a great warrior, mocked the god of love, Eros. The insulted Eros then prepared two arrows: one of gold and one of lead. He shot Apollo with the gold arrow, instilling in the god a passionate love for the river nymph Daphne. He shot Daphne with the lead arrow, instilling in her a hatred for Apollo. Having taken after Apollo’s sister, Artemis, Daphne had spurned her many potential lovers, preferring instead woodland sports and exploring the forest. She had dedicated herself to perpetual virginity.

Apollo continually followed her, begging her to stay, but the nymph continued to reject him. She ran from him and upon seeing that Apollo was bound to reach her, she called upon her father, a river god, "Help me, Peneus! Open the earth to enclose me, or change my form, which has brought me into this danger! Let me be free of this man from this moment forward!" And with Peneus answered her plea and “a heavy numbness seizes her limbs; her soft breasts were surrounded by a thin bark, her hair changed into the foliage, her forearms changed into branches." She was turned into a laurel tree.

In spite of Daphne's terror and fervent insistence that he leave her alone, Apollo vowed to honor her forever and made a laurel wreath for his hair out of her leaves and branches. Apollo also used his powers of eternal youth and immortality to render the laurel tree evergreen.

Queen Hippolyta was one of the queens of the Amazons. Here she is wearing her magic girdle.

The Amazons are known to be fierce female warriors and are found in Greek Mythology. Queen Hippolyta appears in the Ninth Labor in the "Twelve Labors of Hercules." In this quest, Hercules must obtain Queen Hippolyta's girdle. Queen Hippolyta was happy to give her girdle to Hercules. However, Hera ruins everything.
