I am so stuck on the names I want that I can't even apply for any pets because they're not THE EXACT NAMES I WANT. The problem is that all the names I'm interested in, every single one, is already taken by someone who doesn't look like they're leaving any time soon. And so I look at them all daily and then go to the adoption center daily and see several names I like...but they're not THE EXACT NAMES I WANT and the cycle of pouting starts all over again. Tell me you do this too. -_-;;;
I want to create two pets in particular...one for my love of the oceans and Sea Shepherd and another for my love of cats. But I don't want just a nice name or a real name or even just a related real word...it has to be THE EXACT NAMES I WANT.
I literally have a whole list on the sidebar in my notepad and I check through them daily. It's bad, you guys. Yeah, I know I could create a pet or adopt a pet with some other name and go about creating the pet, but I would get frustrated and disheartened each day the name wasn't available and then I'd probably miss it when it was and that would start a whole shit-storm, so I basically can't create either pet until I have the names. Ugh. FML.
headdesk
[edit] So I've found a name for my cats pet...Kittycats, lol. Super happy with that. Also found a name for my Doctor Who fanpet - Timey Wimey! SUPER happy about that.
But I can't for the effing life of me find a Harry Potter/Hufflpuff/Magical name for my Harry Potter OC. Her name is currently Maryanne, which I kind of don't really like anymore, but there was a pet with that name so I just went ahead and adopted her. But now I really want to find a different name for the character and the pet and my mind just keeps coming up with the same names that I can't have. There's one name that would be amazing, but it doesn't clear until next year and I just have abso-fucking-lutely no luck with clearings.
yea this seems to be a common thing with people; you definitely aren't the only one out there who keeps a list of names they like to look up once in a while i mean personally if something i want is taken, i just shrug and say w/e and attempt at finding an alternative because as long as subeta is stuck in the archaic age of unique names there's not much else one can do );
On the one hand, I totally get you. There are still times when I go to look up a name, all excited with the prospect of the character I'll make out of it, only to slowly deflate when I find out that name is taken.
On the other hand, a long history of disappointment has taught me not to get too attached to names. There were so many times I'd apply for an UFA pet with the perfect name, only for the owner to ghost on adoptions or for them to go to someone else. I've had to train myself not to get too elaborate in developing a character for adoptions so that I'm not too invested when it doesn't work out. I'm not sure that's completely a good thing, because it also makes me feel a bit detached from the characters I do create, and right now I'm kinda stuck and uninspired.
I've stalked a pet name for years. LITERAL.YEARS. I believe I stalked this pet name (Viena, one of my oldest characters) for 3 or 4 years. Every couple of months I'd check out that pet and its owner. When at one point, they stopped logging in. Then every few months their absence time would grow and grow until eventually I was able to snatch that name away.
Bottom line, don't give up! (And don't go on hiatus for over one year, least your hard work gets snatched away :b)
I know the frustration well. I tried to get a name a week or so ago, I made sure I was here when it was due to clear, I had my pet ready to be named....and someone still got it before my transaction could go through. :/ Mere seconds. And I doubt the person who got the name is going anywhere.
When I was younger I felt that frustration a LOT. I still feel it now at times so I totally feel your pain!! D:
I've been doing character creation and development on pet sites for more than a decade. I'm a perfectionist, and I recently realised that by not being able to have the exact name I wanted growing up, for so many years, I had stifled my creativity and gave up on a character ideas. I ended up having a really hard time actually developing and creating characters.
It took me many years, and seeing other people create offsite, to realize that I actually had the creative freedom to create a character with any name I wanted. Just because x person I know had an OC with that name didn't mean I couldn't create my own character that shared that name as well.
I would really love to see this place move away from unique pet names so that folks could experience that creative freedom and have the exact names that they want. Subeta is such a nice place to host/organise your characters and grow creative skills with an added bonus of seeing them have cute pet pixels attached to them! : )
I know that feeling, There are a few names I really wanted but either belong to moderators or active members and even if those names went ufa - the chances I could do an app that would get me the pet is very slim since most people want rns. Through I did get lucky and the Japanese version of one of the names I wanted came free through there is another Japanese name I do check on from time to time. Now I am waiting for one name to clear on the 25th - it's the name of my mum's best friend whom passed away from cancer and I would love to get it when it clears.
Through I also don't mind fantasy names. Kavio and Dindi came from a fantasy series and apparently Dindi is a real name. I also found Mary Anne was free - such as Mary Anne from the Baby Sitters Club or the female Scottish version of Shawn - Sian.
And I'll be honest, I can't stand names with ,'s or numbers. With the pets having ids - would make sense to allow multiple users to have the same pet name. Even through my OC Chloe can go under Kuroe and Analeigh can change to Analiese, my other OCs don't have that luxury and very seldom many RNs go up for clearing.
And this is why we need the unique name system to go away
I am the same with some names. I want the exact names or I do not want them at all. I hate dots underscores or Numbers on names and so this is no option for me. So I tend to stalk that names. I am ok with it as long as I see the person is active and working with that pet in some way, I only get pretty sad if the name is on an „I log in once a year“ account. The only alternative spellings I am tend to accept is a k instead of a c for some names like Markus for example.

i stalked seagull and frans for a while (a year?? maybe a tad longer idr) and got both when they went ufa, so you never know when people will adopt out! :>
otherwise i've learned to just........ put my oc's on rw's. it's not a super big deal to me since like............ i'll still call them by their actual name in their stories and stuff lmao
but also yes i too wish subeta would do away with unique names asdfghjkl
I've got a few ways to help with this problem (everybody goes through it and it stinks)
Try adding a capitol "i" to names that have an L or lowercase L to names that start with capital i: Walter & WaIter look the same/ Iris & lris look the same too!
Some people add numbers or symbols... Not a giant fan myself but I have plans to do it for one name I really really want (I'll tell ya what I want what I really really want song stuck in head now) once I get a pet slot.
You can also replace vowels with different vowels and get the same sounds. I own "Liem" which I actually like better than how harsh "Liam" looks.
Anubis- I own Anubus (pound snag but I love it!)
Replacing a y with an i or vice versa works great too. I adopted Gypsi from someone and her name is just so cute! I actually (again) like it better than the true spelling.
It is so hard to know that your dream name is sitting on an active account and will likely never purge... But hopefully one of these tips can help you find a name that's close to what you want, and you never know, you may wind up liking it more! :D
do you mean the nonprofit group Sea Shepherd? because if so that makes me so happy
I've definitely been there too. A lot of my Subeta pets are based on characters from my (future) webcomic, so once I settle on a name for that character, I do NOT want to have anything else for them other than their official name. And it would really bug me if I misspelled their Subeta names slightly, or had to add periods or dashes or numbers in their names, or change Ls to uppercase Is to get around the unique name barrier. It's stupid, I know, and I shouldn't as flustered as I do over it, but gosh darn it, if one of my webcomic protagonists is named Luka, I don't really know what else to do here for his Subeta reincarnation!
My problem is exponentially harder because I hate RNs, too (a self-inflicted silly problem, but nevertheless, a problem). I have a couple but I'm trying to move away from them. Well, I want to move away from them, except the only other name I want for those characters is their actual names. And, well, you know. Subeta had that whole argument about unique names not too long ago and nothing came of it, so here we are. : p

I feel you. I like to name my pets real names and they are becoming more and more scarce. The biggest problem is I am really odd about name spelling IRL. I can not stand unique spelling of real names, but you pretty much have to use unique spelling here like I have Jered instead of Jared. That first E actually bugs me a lot, lol. I even had to resort to a name that I have never heard, Zeck that I found on a list of baby boy names, haha. I like the idea of moving away from unique names on the site. There are just way too many pets on this site to have any decent names left.
I feel your pain, and I'm usually more strict about fan pet names than OC names. I will not endure misspelled fan pet names :(. The only solution for me would be using RW for certain fan pets, but I still have to take some off site because none of the RWs I can find work for them.
Though patience and persistence will help a lot when it comes to names. I consider myself a very impatient person, and I have no idea how I can wait for 7 years for a name xD...Also don't be discouraged if you lose a name during clearing or when you apply for UFA pets. I stopped participating in name clearings and pet adoptions for a while because I didn't think I could snag good names or get picked as a new owner. Now I'm glad I got back to it. I still lose a shit ton of names, but the occasional "win" always feels very rewarding. I guess before the site has the final verdict on non-unique vs unique names, we all just have to cope with the suspense and inconvenience in our own ways. Best of luck, guys!

I somehow really suck at clearings lately but somehow I am more lucky with application. I somehow don't know but sometimes I think I don't get a pet in a clearing cause some days/weeks later a petname I wanted for ages goes UFA.

I kind of did that with Skellig - I just really, really wanted the name but saw the account was active so figured my chances of getting the pet were very slim. Logged on one day and Skellig was just sitting in the adopt r us. Kind of same with Joey Wheeler, I speak with the old owner from time to time and they are just happy a fan of the character got him, lol.
I'm pretty much the same with the waiting. I am waiting for a name to go on the clearing list but I'm worried the owner will return before than and than's it back to waiting for the name to reach the time again since I have noted a few wait till almost a month before the notification will go on the profile before logging in. I can understand if the pet means something to you like a memorial pet but to just hoard the name because you can, seems kind of mean when someone else may be able to do more with it.
I have gotten lucky with a few clearings - Gillian {not the name I was wanting but still a very pretty name}, Helen, Loreena, Zaki, Kuroe and Ayr were all from clearings. I can't say I always like doing applications for pets up for adoption but if the name clicks, I will take a shot at it.
and another idea for that list - look to see if the name has a counterpart within a different language like Scottish Gaelic, Japanese, Native American, etc. A sample could be Mary - Mairi is the Gaelic version. and Gwen - in Gaelic there's Gwyn, Gwynn, etc. I think sometimes it's neat to have the name not in English.
I have this problem, too! You’re definitely not alone. One of the names I’m stalking actually belongs to a pet I pounded when I got back from hiatus in 2017. I really want the name back now, but the pet is on an account that logs in decently often... I wish I hadn’t impulse-pounded it 2 years ago, haha. ;__; Oh well.
But don’t give up hope! I stalked the name Homura for almost 2 years, and managed to snatch it when the user went inactive. I never expected that to happen, but it did! You never know when an account will go inactive or a pet will go UFA.
It’d be nice if one day, pet names didn’t need to be unique, though... It’s fun to get the unique name you want, but since pets all have IDs, I wouldn’t mind if the unique-name system got phased out.
