This really depends on the artist and is something you need to discuss with your artist. What I've typically seen is people either offering 'Limited Rights' or 'Full Rights' when selling a PSD, so you need to know what you're being offered.

Limited rights refers to them giving you the PSD but you having to follow their rules / guidelines for using it.

Full rights refers to them giving you the PSD with no extra guidelines, and often means that the artist doesn't provide further assistance because the file is 'yours' and no longer 'theirs'.

I'd also add I've never seen PSD rights sell for csc in my entire time here so you might expect to pay RL currency. Not saying it's impossible, but for giving away rights, I just haven't seen it personally! Ping me back if you need any further assistance!

c: thank you! i actually had the offer (from the artist) to purchase in csc x3 but we're just looking for previous sales for .psd.

so for limited vs full rights - does that just mean i can take the file to a new artist?

[edit=] this being said - i will still be paying a different artist for the overlay that is meant to match the CI[/edit]

For limited rights, your artist can stipulate rules such as "Only these artists" or "Please inform me of the artist first before commissioning them so that I may approve them."

For full rights, there typically aren't rules because the artist is giving away ALL of their rights from creation, so you'd be able to go to who ever / when ever you wanted.

I should specify that full rights are usually a LOT more expensive, as it means the product isn't really the artist's anymore. I personally charge 2.5x the original commission price on top of that price, with a minimum threshold for the rights. This could mean spending $100+ for the commission AND the rights all together, but it means the commissioner gets 100% free reign on what ever they want to do in the future to the piece. In your case, it's just an item image so I wouldn't be charging anywhere close to that, but it would still probably end up being $40 total for the com+rights under my prices. Limited rights though for the same item would probably be half or even less based on the negotiated rule set / stipulations. So for example, let's say the original commission cost $7 for the item image alone, and you wanted limited rights. I might offer the PSD to you with the rules of no line art editing and only recolor usage for $10 ($17 total for the entire thing) and might ask to be compensated with 50% off any recolors you make that I would like to purchase.

Hopefully that makes more sense!

that makes a lot more sense. i would just assume it would be limited rights since i wouldn't be doing anything with it besides recolors versus alterations.

thank you thank you!~

Always best to just talk to your artist and get out an agreement before funds exchange hands if they haven't already. You should know your rights of what you are and aren't allowed to do so you don't accidentally cross a line you didn't know existed. And if you're ever unsure, asking them directly instead of the 'hope and pray' method is always my best advice x'D

Yeah for sure. I think PSD sales are fairly uncommon unless an artist is leaving or just doesn't have the time anymore to devote to commission work.

If you guys are discussing limited use, I suggest trying to decide on these things:

What types of recolors are allowed? (Basic ? Gradient ? Complex / New Patterns?) Is any editing allowed? (And if so, what amount, and should each edit be discussed before it's made?) Are there any limits to artists that can be worked with? (EX: Who, or how many? Some artists may not want their PSDs passed to multiple artists at a time, so it's reasonable if they want you to pick one person and stick with them, etc.) Are copies of the items owed, and if so, for what? (Are free copies required? Discounted copies? Do you just need to make sure you offer a slot on the recolors so they can pay for the ones they want?)

:)
