Major Drills looks so angry and honestly like he's about to do something violent. While I love doing his quests, I hate looking at that drawing of him, it gives me flashbacks to unpleasant stuff involving violent, angry men.

Carl too- his drawing just looks so greasy and his little write up refers to Babbette as a 'wench', for kicking him out of the bar for what appears to be him sexually harassing the barmaids.

It makes me uncomfortable. I spend a few hours daily on this site, mainly as escapism from a reality which had a violent and disgusting men in it for a good portion of both my childhood and adult life and part of me feels like by even having depictions of it here on Subeta that 'men are just like that' and being uncomfortable with it is the problem.

Can we please do something about this? Like is it possible to change up the site art and Carl's gross little write up please?

I'm not going to give my two cents about the characters or art themselves, but for what it's worth, these are both easy things to fix externally without asking the site to change them. I believe you can hide an image with CSS (though I don't know how to off-hand), or adblocking it is always an option. A text replacer extension for your browser would take care of Carl's dialogue. I've used one for other things on the site before

I agree with the assessment that this is an issue more easily solved by ad/textblocking, as the images seem disturbing to the OP for reasons specific to the OP.

consider adding this img[src="//img.subeta.net/majordrills.png"], img[src="//img.subeta.net/npc_drunkcarl.gif"]{display:none;} over here (link).

the names for npc images are not uniform, so if you need to block anyone else, make sure to copy the image url directly.

oh cool I didnt know you could change text. I find malaria or w/e her name is to be really nasty and snappish which reminds me of things from real life also. like no matter how quickly i do her quests i am treated like a failure and it reminds me of irl. also shinwas overall attitude on her text too. thanks guys!

Major Drills is well...a drills major, he's here to make sure you do your tasks. Unpleasant, but he's just the stereotype of the angry army guy. I'm okay with him, he's just doing his job!

I...really do find Carl sleazy, though, and maybe it would be time to go and recheck his text, though.

I feel like we could change Carl's text without much fuss. He could have just been kicked for being too loud and rowdy in general instead of being... touchy.

Yeah honestly just adblock/custom CSS that stuff if it makes you that uncomfortable. Cinthia and Pete creep me out for two very different reasons, so I have them adblocked lol

Personally I don't have an issue with Carl's text, but eh, I don't see the harm in changing the bit about being grabby with the ladies. Thanks for clearing up the pirate lingo lol

Personally, these don't seem urgent to me. I can't really see anything being done about Drills since he's... Literally based off of a drills major. It's a specific tactic they use to motivate. I hate the tactic, but it's kinda that way.

While I have been wanting Carl to grow as a character, I think there's some misunderstanding.

1. Wench may seem like a rude term because of some media, it literally means "female servant" ... As in a woman who works in the service industry (IE, a bar; hence bar wench)
2. Nowhere does it say he is handsy, it says he got kicked out for being bawdy, which means to be lewd in a comedic way... So basically like saying "he said too many dirty jokes" He's an alcoholic pirate with a terrible sense of humor.

I'm sorry these characters irk you, but they're two out of many characters we have on this site. Characters are flawed. Some more than others. If it were something worse I'd say things need to be changed now (like if Carl actually called Babette a whore). But things don't exactly need to be squeaky clean and pristine.

thank you for touching on this, muerte. i was confused as to where the 'touchy' aspect was coming from, but i didn't want to stir anything since I can sympathize with the OP in regards to NPCs being triggering to a traumatic event.

Major Drills looks and sounds a bit scary but he does have redeeming features. His quests include feeding our pets, feeding trapped minions, donating food to Charity, getting food for the Dragon of Autumn and donating items to the Donation Center. At Moroside he dresses in what looks like a pink tutu.

Everyone should feel free to to use Adblock and custom CSS if a particular NPC makes them feel uncomfortable, though.

The Pirates are based on 18th Century pirates so I think it's safe to assume that Carl is referring to Babbette as somebody who serves drinks at a tavern.

1st - if you're that big of a baby just get out of internet 2nd - they are both the work of someone whom you are profoundly disrespecting (and you're loving it) 3rd - use a browser extension to hide TWO COMPLETELY NORMAL HUMAN BEINGS ILLUSTRATIONS since a site won't change exclusively for you

Oh, I can most certainly sympathize too. Since most were already helping with ways to block/change things, I thought I'd clear up some reasoning on why Drills most likely won't change and clarify some of Carl's misunderstandings (which can really go a long way !).

I do hope my comment didn't come off dismissive or mockery. OP if you read this, again I am so sorry for things that have caused trauma and I am sorry for the things that can trigger it.

yeah, i didn't mean anything in a mocking or dismissive way either. there are problematic NPC women as well! Everyone reacts differently dependent on their trauma, but I did appreciate you pointing out that in no way is Carl's text implicating him of touching women, because it doesnt say it at all, but I didn't personally know how to phrase it without sounding demeaning towards the OP, and you did it succinctly!

It's why I quoted the Rathskeller Inn introduction when I remembered it. Carl says wench and Babbette says wenches.

Sexual harassment doesn't have to be physical. -"he said too many dirty jokes" This is basically a man who's so constantly joking at women about their body, having sex and doing other lewd things to women that he gets asked to leave the bar he's in by the woman who owns the place because the female bar staff are uncomfortable. How is this not considered sexual harassment?
