Please believe me when I say that I know this is incredibly controversial to bring up! I'm not even putting this forth as an actual suggestion - I'm creating this topic to start the conversation about wardrobe bloat, not to say we should definitely purge old CWs or cap the number of items you can have in your wardrobe. Feel free to make your own suggestions, present counter-points, etc.
This is also contingent on whether or not staff believe any changes to the wardrobe would help with site stability down the road. So. We'll see. This could be entirely irrelevant!
I'll be updating this post if we get confirmation/denial of ideas, and adding quotes of other ideas.
cw removal is confirmed no
Getting into the details, I think it's fairly safe to say that a lot of the older CWs on the site are so far from current site style that they're nearly useless. I'm talking about items like these:
-
Naturally, this is subjective, but I think most users would agree that none of these items would be approved by today's standards. How feasible would some sort of purge system be, where older items are reviewed and considered for removal? There could be a CW graveyard, where the icon and art are stored for posterity, and a system to request the item be reinstated; a refund program, where users who own purged CWs have CSC added to their account to compensate (giving them CSC to put back into new, better CWs); or a system where where if the only copies of a CW on site are in the pawn, the item is automatically removed from the site.
There iiiiis also the issue that there are a fair few items approved now that are not at all site style. That actually fly in the face of site standards. I won't link any new items - I'm notlooking to call out any particular artist or user (I'd ask that no one else link new items either) - but we could use stricter approval standards for CWs. I shouldn't be able to amuse myself by browsing newly approved CWs and linking them to friends to laugh about how far from site standard they are, and yet, I can. (ETA: I am not saying that I laugh at how bad they are. There are arguably beautiful items that do not fit site standard that are approved.)
Another option is that there could be a (preferably high) cap on the number of items users can have in their wardrobe at one time. I don't feel like this would be a huge issue for most users - I know personally, once I hit the top tier achievement, I purged my wardrobe because roughly 60% of it was useless to me. The biggest issue is that there are users who like to collect all official wearables on site, and they would no longer be able to.
Other options: Focus on revamping old items before creating new ones? Allow revamps for new items which may not be useful to the user base? I'm drawing a blank but I'm sure there are others?
And again, please keep in mind that I'm throwing this topic out here to start the discussion, not to say that any of these ideas should definitely be implemented. I'm looking for input from other people and from staff, because I care about Subeta and would like to see changes that would help it become more sustainable. tl;dr, please try to keep your replies constructive in this topic, both to me and to other users you may disagree with!

Counterpoints:
While I wouldn't be opposed to another look at CW guidelines, each CW item on the site passed at the time it was submitted, even if the art style hasn't aged well. Purging actual user-submitted items which cost real money for users to submit may cause more drama and bad feeling than a purge is worth. I myself own a few CW's whose styles look very outdated, but I still own them and used money to buy them and would be quite upset if they were taken off the site, regardless of reason.
Given how very very very very very many non-CW items exist on site that haven't been revamped or retired or, yes, purged, I'd suggest focusing on non-cw items first, if it is decided that reducing items would help.
I'm always in favor of revamps before deletions. (I'm speaking of non-CW's here, I don't think CW revamps are appropriate unless it's literally unavoidable. I can opinionate further on that if anyone wants.)
Fully agree that the "X number of wearables in your wardrobe" achievement should go away (if it hasn't already, I haven't looked lately). I have a lot of non-cw really old looking junk in my wardrobe that I will never, ever wear because I was going for those achievements, then never took them out of the wardrobe because it's annoying and I haven't gotten around to cleaning them out. If that's no longer a user goal, it may be easier to justify or encourage slimming down the wardrobe or instituting a wardrobe item limit.

(I don't know why the quote marks haven't shown up with raumlet's name)
I definitely agree with revamping old items and not creating a lot more new ones unless it's for a holiday or special event. It can be a frustrating experience looking through all the items for something and coming across things which hardly anyone or nobody would ever wear now. They all have to be loaded. Examples which are just my personal opinion.
All colours for Magic Rabbit Ear
This item could be a proper flying saucer type space craft to go with our space backgrounds.
[item2=Shining UFO]
(sorry sorcerer I didn't realize that there was a forum group tag for # 1)

I'm totally on board for this -- I think this + a potential cap (a very high one, where like, super power users are now) would really be beneficial and would also mean more wardrobe items actually cycle on the site instead of sitting in massive wardrobes collecting dust.
I think instead prioritizing creation over collecting is something we haven't done a great job of. Having more frequent contests (even if we just give users the tools to run their own avatar contests), spotlights, etc, that highlight actually using those items and giving achievements prizes for those things would really be a lot better than what we do now.

Cosigning 's post. I put a lot of cws in my pet TCs!
@Cresenta I completely forgot about that. I know pet TCs are a thing, but I mostly ignore my pets, so they aren't always the first thing I think of : B thank you for the reminder!
I’m sorry but while I agree a wardrobe cap may help, suggesting CWs we PAID FOR to put on site be deleted because YOU dont like them or like to laugh at them is just rude and insulting and I’m disgusted you had the nerve to call out some of us by linking our items.
Thanks for the very reasonable post that shows you read all the disclaimers I added, Disasters! The items I linked are literally some of the first CWs ever created. If you're upset that your art years ago wasn't great, well, join the club of people whose art improved over the years : P
Also, you paid for the privilege to GIVE Subeta your art, and Subeta is actually free to do as they please with it. As I said repeatedly, though - I wasn't actually presenting it as something that definitely should be done.
It's not MY art, its things i commissioned, but regardless, at the time those were up to standards and approved. The fact that you are singling out certain pieces and artists disgusts me and I have every right to be offended you put one of my items there.
I did read your whole post, but deleting ANYONE's art that was approved by staff standards is NOT okay. And to actually suggest we shouldn't call out newer items you admittedly amuse yourself laughing at but you feel the need to call out old ones? Seriously?
Whether or not we agree with how staff does approvals or not, laughing at someone's art be it old or new is rude and wrong.
I have opinions on this that would get me blocked, warned and ultimately banned from the site. But aside from how subjective the "usefulness" of old style CWs is, I dislike practically everything about this suggestion for so many reasons.

When I hit the 15K mark for wardrobe I purged. I didn't sell the stuff, just put it away. Then I found myself constantly going to my purged items and adding stuff back. I eventually gave up and put it all back.
I am vehemently opposed to limiting the wardrobe, until and unless, they fix it properly:
I really don't see how limiting the items you can add to your wardrobe would improve things though. Not unless you also remove the option to view all items. Because if I could only have a handful of things in my wardrobe I'd always be using the all items option to make HAs and so still loading a crap ton of things.
As for the suggestion of getting rid of CWs, I'm all for it. But I'm biased never wanted CWs onsite to begin with.

If you don't see the difference between presenting art that is years and years old, which I'm sure even the artists would admit isn't up to current site standard (if the artists are even still around), and presenting art that was released last month by someone who has talent but a long way to go, I can't help you. Moving on, because you're not being constructive, and I'm not interested in spamming this thread with drama.
If you want to send me an smail to discuss further, I'd be interested in hearing it? Only if you're comfortable with it. I'm looking for any input other users have.
Also yeah we aren't deleting any old items or CWs.

I don't know if something like this would be feasible or even if anyone would want it but here's a suggestion. New Year wearables with a year on them are unlikely to be worn. For example
How about demoting them into ordinary items? People who have them in galleries or treasure chests won't lose their display items but they will no longer show up in the wardrobe when we want to look for clothing items we don't own.
I'd like to add my two cents here that I agree with the counter-points namely:
I also support this:
Public Ping Group - Xanadu Galleria and RAE Collab
I really really extremely want:I... thank you for the offer but I'm going to pass.

It'd be nice if instead of purging old cws, a way be found to, if commissioner and artist (if they could be found) were in agreement, update them somehow too.
spoiler cause perhaps a bit off topic, but just putting it out there...
I also wish some of these old old CWs that got lost during the transitions and are now sorely pined after for TCs etc. could somehow be re-released in the new system :(

Going to add I'm okay with a wardrobe cap but at the same time I'm confused maybe just because I don't know a lot about coding. All the items that exist are already IN the wardrobe whether you've got them or not, so I don't see how limiting what we can actually have helps? I guess I've always assumed there is a pool of items and the wardrobe checks "Y/N" if the user has it when trying to save it? If I'm wrong though and it really is the wardrobe causing the site problems and staff can actually come out and say that's where all the problems are, then I'd be fine with limiting items there.
Alright, guys, Keith has addressed this thread and it is quickly devolving, so I am going to go ahead and close it down. In the future, though, we ask that you please only post a suggestion if it's actually a suggestion, and not intended to spark a debate.
Thank you! :)
