Looking through the suggestions I didn't see anything like this, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I would very much like the characters allowed for naming to be expanded to include: Comma ( , ), Exclamation Point ( ! ), Tilde (~), and accented and extra lettering such as those found on This Page and This Page.

It would not only allow for more diverse naming, but seeing as how there's a current argument over unique pet names (Here and Here) this might be a better solution.

, if you have any opinions?

Idk how viable it would be, but I'd love to be able to use é and ç on pet names :p

I have an inkling that those characters aren't allowed for security reasons but I can't say for certain.

That being said, if it won't cause a problem I don't see why not allow them.

I'm always good with more options. 👍

@ Spice Sadly not possible, at least for apostrophes. I'm assuming the reason's the same for special characters too. :c I asked Bug about this in the nicknames topic - link to Bug's reply

I went digging through some topics where this came up and found this: link to a longer explanation in an old problems & bugs topic

Hm, while that does explain why Apostrophes aren't (and probably won't be) allowed, it doesn't necessarily exclude some of the others. I'll remove apostrophes from my OP.

I support this, and this also leads me to wonder why some special characters are allowed as pet names? A friend of mine owned ? but they were forced to change their pet's name despite owning it for years. However, I still see pets with such names on the site.

I won't post the pets in question as it could be targeting. Since these pets do exist, there has to be a middle ground somewhere for characters in names.

I miss being able to use ä, ö and ü for pet names but I doubt they will ever bring them back.

@ Spice 👍 I do hope the character list can be expanded, that would open up a whole heap of new real names for creation! Like Émile, or Jürgen.

(I'm biased, but giving full support for č, ć, ž, š and đ for the special characters list)

I'm all for naming variety. BUT. The only downside would be duplicates upon duplicates upon duplicates but I think that could also be good in taking some of the "novelty" away?

Subeta did used to have a much broader selection of characters. They all caused problems in one way or another, but the original pets were allowed in as grandfathered.

It's been years since and the coding for the site has changed a bit. Maybe they can be allowed now?

I'd love some of the commonly seen characters like '( ' and ', ' be put into use, but the characters that are impossible to type using a English input method are a different story :P

Technically they can be by using Alt + Numkeys or by copying them from elsewhere on the internet. But that's why I'm only suggesting it for use with Pets, since users type Usernames WAYYY more often (although I always copy them from above the avatar's head).

pet names are kinda like a trophy now, ppl are always finding a pet name that is clean without numbers and intentional typos, so maybe even if the characters are added, the need for the specific pet names won't die?

I'm sure the "clean" names will still be highly coveted. Even if I got a name with a special character, even I'd probably still stalk the original every now and then and hope :P

I'd be down down for this because it opens the door for traditional European names to be spelled in their original format. My pet Kulovic's name is technically not spelled the way it should be, and I'd love to modify it to the correct Croatian spelling.

I don't know why non-unique pet names should even be a discussion...but having more characters to use is a good step forward
