Why do we not get messages or e-mails on this? I owned Paralix and Before... Did I have to use settings to get e-mails about this? Sometimes real life just gets the best of you, you know... I've been gone a while, was about to get started again but now I kind of don't want to... Fat chance I'll ever get Paralix back as a name. It happened last week :( Any way I can get this restored? Thank you so much for reading!

There are no emails, you haven't logged for a whole year and inactive accounts are cleared to free server space. Sorry but you can't get it back.

Sorry your pets names were taken. Maybe this is a chance to find even better names, or do something new with your pets. I mean, you get free name changes, which is pretty generous ;) and then, you just need to remember to log in at least once a year...

once you've been gone for a year, your pet names and username go up for grabs. this is so no name becomes unobtainable by sitting on an inactive account for years and years (such as on neopets, where good names have become quite scarce after 20 years).

while you can't get your pet names back (unless the users who took them also eventually go inactive), you do get free renames on the pets whose names got taken.

i don't believe there are email reminders, just the occasional newsletter, but it's never sure thing how frequent those will be. you're welcome to suggest email reminders, though - for instance an email after 6 months and another after 11 notifying you that your account will be marked inactive soon.

Would have been great considering how long I had those names... guess I won’t waste my time or money anymore here. I’m kind of disappointed. Thank you for the replies though, appreciate your time! I’ll just quit subeta then I guess :)

well, if you're going to get sour even though you get free changes? and leave subeta after being gone for +1 year? then it's for the best. good luck wherever you go

I'd take this as a chance to create new characters or ideas first rather than quit. Many other people have this happen and they either abandon the old pet or make a new name for it. I get it, life does happen. I myself will vanish off and on for a month or two. I'd also be upset at losing some of my names. However I think I'd hunt out new names or pets rather than quit. Free renames are pretty awesome of them.

FINALLY GOT THE 15K WARDROBE DONE!!!!! Next up gutting and selling it.

..I actually think has a point.. where does it say that your names will be cleared after 1 year of inactivity? I just know this because I've been around forever..

@ Ying https://subeta.net/help/faq.php

Quote
I have a name I have been hoping to have. Do usernames or pet names ever clear?
Pet names and usernames are not really cleared. They do however become available after a certain time. In the past, inactive and frozen users would be totally deleted every so often. Now instead, if a user is inactive for a year or frozen for 10 months, their username and pet names will be available for anyone to use. The one exception is if a user has passed away, the username will be kept on the account as a legacy username. Their pet names however will be up after that time. If someone takes a name from an inactive account and the user comes back, they will have a free name change to help start again. Any pet or user who has their name taken will remain the same name with _#### on the end. For example, Bob would become Bob_92934.

Sure, but that section is about /wanting/ names to clear. Maybe there should be a question for like: "What happens if I want to leave Subeta/delete my account?"

or

"What happens if I am inactive for a period of time?"

I think those would better address that question. We've had people complain about this in the past, so maybe it's time to address it? Different things happen on different sites, how was supposed to know names were going to clear?

Also that FAQ is pretty new. I forgot it was a thing.

Yeah, it took me a hot minute to find it to show you, lmao. It needs a section unto itself.

@ Ying That's a very good point, actually! Hm, even before the FAQ, I don't remember it being formally listed anywhere before that you can't delete your account, or that accounts that weren't logged into for a year are marked as inactive. My memory is shit, no arguments there, but iirc it was always an odd sort of common knowledge that was passed down from user to user (or answered by staff in the help forum). It might have been listed in the old FAQ topic here in help, but I don't have the drive to go digging for that thing now, if it's even intact and didn't get deleted when the FAQ page went live. :'|

I do agree that it would be nice to have it actually listed in the FAQ. The mechanics of the name clearing system are as balanced as they can be, all things considered, but users do need to be made aware of how the system works.

Then again, even with it being listed clearly, you have the potential situation of "I was gone for a year, you can't expect me to remember these things!"

Edited b/c words got tangled.

[edit]Editing this post b/c I don't want to keep bumping this thread up: if anyone has feedback, ideas, etc. on the current clearing system, there's an existing topic in Site Feedback.

Yeah, I only knew it because my friend told me. An automated email would be fantastic too just because...I mean if you're offline for a long time it can be hard to remember how long it's been.

There should not be a warning. I don't think staff should go through such trouble just because some user who can't bother to log in a whole year want to "keep" their pet they obviously don't care about. These users would just keep their account around for enough time to make clearing pointless.

I'm all in for more clear guidelines.

Also we have had subeta newsletters go out within the past year that should have triggered you to come check atleast. I'm sorry you lost those names though.

I don't think it's at all unreasonable to request that information about this system is more readily available. While I really like the system and think it's the best way to go about name clearings, I do understand why someone might be annoyed if they weren't aware upfront that losing names due to inactivity were a possibility.
