WEEK OF WOMEN IN SCIENCE

Today, we celebrate the achievements of women, known and unknown, remembered or forgotten, who have forged the way for girls and women in science today. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science, celebrated each year on 11 February, was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to promote full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls. Less than 30% of researchers worldwide are women and the day reminds that their participation should be strengthened. Many of you know the physicist Marie Curie who became the first women to win the Nobel Prize in 1903. But there are many others out there, then as now, who did and do an amazing job creating or inventing new things and changing and shaping the world with them.

Female scientist 1: Stephanie Kwolek, (July 31, 1923 – June 18, 2014). She is a Polish-American chemist who invented kevlar, the material used to make bulletproof vests among other things

Female scientist 2: Mae Jemison, (October 17, 1956 - ). She is an African-American engineer, physician, and famously the first African-Amercan woman to become a NASA astronaut.

Let me tell you that I love the theme of this contest. Also, it was very difficult to make an avvie that depicted the two scientists that I had in mind, so in the end I choose to use the same background for both. Shame on me xD.

1) Gertrude Belle Elion (1918-1999) was an American biochemist and pharmacologist. She got the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine on 1988 for the development of medicines against cancer and other diseases, and that were also the precursors for the synthesis of new ones.

2) Eva Ramón Gallegos is a Mexican scientist, researcher and professor in Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (México). She discovered the cure for HPV by a procedure called phototherapy.

I am glad you liked it, perhaps it was too difficult a theme or clashed with the Valentines kissing frenzy, LOL. I´ll postpone most other contests until Survival ends.
