It's just a meme. Regarding wolves. https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/419/902/62f.png

If we're gonna stretch it to see ableism in a meme we should just shut down the internet.

Since when is MoonMoon ableist? I must have missed that particular memo.

It was a name meme where it was supposed to show you your "wolf name" and someone got Moon Moon.

I have a mental disability and I've never heard of Moon Moon being used as a slur and spaz isn't an offensive word in the US like it is in the UK. It's used to describe someone being overly excited or energetic and is not associated with mental disabilities here.

Moon Moon is just a silly meme. If people have been using it the wrong way, that's their fault.

And as for Spaz

Quote
In American slang, the term "spaz" has become largely disconnected from a description of people with disabilities, and is generally understood as a casual word for clumsiness, otherness, sometimes associated with overexcitability, excessive startle response ("jumpiness"), excessive energy, involuntary or random movement, or hyperactivity.
This is on the article you posted. Subeta is a US-based site. As someone who's lived in the US my entire life, I have never heard "spaz" used for anything other than someone who acts like they've had too much coffee.

And pansy isn't an insult in all countries, yet that was removed.

My understanding is that the people wanting "pansy" removed didn't necessarily have a problem with it being on the site, so much as it being somewhere they'd see it several times a day. This isn't really the same.

However if people with disabilities or chronic illnesses do have a problem with these items, then I would understand the concern and also apologize.

The only thing "ableist" about moon moon is that the original poster used the R word to mean "i'd be the stupidest/silliest wolf". I don't think they meant a literally mentally disabled wolf, just the colloquial meaning, ie. stupid/silly. The OP's word choice might be considered ableist, or they might've just been ignorant when writing it, and i'm sure other people have since ran with it and made offensive memes because this is the internet. But by itself i don't find moon moon ableist at all.

Can we not wait to change things like this until someone is genuinely offended on their own behalf? Most of the Wiki sections even state that the word has fallen out of favor as an insult, and the items themselves refer to the jitters one receives from overdoses of caffeine.

As a 45 year old woman with Cerebral Palsy in the US, this word has never bothered me; in fact, it's an old childhood nickname that I would not hold dear if it had ever been used maliciously towards me or my friends. Spazz is one of my favorite items on site, and I believe I would ragequit if it was changed unless it was changed to better the site experience for someone truly offended by it because they are affected with a spastic condition. I was raised to not let labels bother me, but realize that not everyone is.

I agree with this, and I'm not too quick to call it ignorance. The thing about language, as with anything, is that transitions take time. What is considered perfectly acceptable slang for decades (or even centuries) will not be seen as pejorative overnight.

Anyway I didn't mean to turn this thread into the train wreck that the B and C thread is (and was going to stay out of all of it until Spazz was brought up), I just think that the preemptive strikes on item names is getting a bit unnecessary. [edit]

I'm English, 25 years old, and I have autism. The word 'spaz' has been used as an insult towards me and other disabled people I know many times. I hate the word. It makes me think of childhood bullying and jeers. It was used against me just last year in the same breath as the r-word and other insults.

In that case, I'm all for a change. I may be awful for it, but I just wanted to make sure that it truly had an impact for someone before a rash decision was made. I get it, I respect it, and I'm behind you and others like you 100%. I am truly sorry if I offended you with my rationalization, and that you and your friends have had to deal with asshats that insist on using words as weapons.

I found this. Spastic Usage Notes

Quote
The offensiveness of spastic and spaz differs considerably between the US and the UK. In the United States, the terms are inoffensive; in the UK, they are typically taken as denigrating references to those with cerebral palsy, and consequently University of Sussex linguist Lynne Murphy has described spastic as "one of the most taboo insults to a British ear"[1] and in a 2003 survey by the BBC it was voted the second-most offensive word relating to disability (after retard).[2][3]

The numbers 2 and 3 are links to two articles in the Reference section.
