I've added a friend but they're not visible on my profile. How do I do that please as I really can't remember.

Try adding them to your favourite friends.

Thanks but I can't remember how to get back to that page. Sorry if it's very obvious, but unfortunately it's not very obvious to me!

Hover over the personal tab, go to the friends link and from there you can add/remove/add to favorites. :)
