Because oh my god you guys. I wanna gush about it with someone. There are a lot of excellent character designs, crazy body type variation and a huge variety in species/details. Plus the animation style is better than I expected, sort of a simpler Avatar but a more detailed Steven Universe...? It's rounded and colorful but with very obvious anime influences, which they're able to smooth out nicely in certain scenes. I don't like the intro song at all, but the animation for it is cute. If you haven't seen it, it's on netflix, go watch it ASAP.
I'm considering watching it, but I'm a bit confused. Apparently that cat girl is supposed to be bad, but I see screenshots of her being friends with the good characters? Does she start out good but turn evil, or does she turn out to be evil all along, like a mole or something who is using the others? Someone else told me she's complicated, which just makes me more curious. Maybe when I've got time, I'll see for myself.
OH MY GOD PLEASE GUSH WITH ME I LOVE IT SO MUCH! I heard so much negativity about the reboot, but I don't take what people say for set-in-stone truth. I had to check it out for myself. I never watched the original She-Ra, but this new one BLEW MY MIND. I watched the finale with the biggest grin on my face. Absolute sparkle-eyes. The characters are all different looking, and people freak out about some being more corpulent or non-white, but like, that doesn't make them bad? They're all unique and likable in their personalities. The villains are also intresting. I love the relationship between Catra and Adora, and I love Scorpia to death, and it all looks really beautiful? The Fright Zone looks like it came straight out of Sonic SatAM, or the first Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon in the 90s where Robotnik (Eggman) took over the world and turned people into robots. So seeing something remniscient of that was a bit of a nostalgia wave for me even without actually watching the show upon which this one is actually based. The plot is really good. I don't know what Hordak is doing or why, but there's enough displayed for me and others to ponder so it's not a bad thing. Characters and their relationships develop over time and people react realistically to different stimuli. I have SO MANY THEORIES about Catra! I'm really delighted by the whole thing. Also, I actually do like the intro song, but I do think that maybe some of the lyrics could be less repetitive. Even so, it's my new favorite show!
And great news! The head person on the show said they had written like 3 seasons worth of story or something, so there are two more seasons confirmed for this! Ah, if only we didn't have to wait for like next year for the next binge... this would be fantastic for a weekly serial series if it were actually on normal television. I want more people to be aware of this show and support it. I just ADORA it, heehee.
YOU HAVE TO WATCH IT The cat girl you're referring to has a complicated relationship to the main character which grows as the series goes on. There's only 13 episodes but each one is like candy--you won't want to stop once you start! Catra is one of my favorit characters because of her complex backstory and her motivations.
It's very hard to explain without spoilers, so I just recommend giving it a go ^^ It's only 13 episodes at 22 minutes each, so it's not tough at all to knock out. She's definitely complex, but a lot of the characters have different motivations which make her dynamic interesting!! :D
aaaAAAAaAAAAAA I'm genuinely so satisfied with how it was all played out. I'm glad the writer's prepared for more, it definitely deserves a continuation with where it left off! And plus, a lot of the cartoons right now are so much more. Just. Inclusive and engaging. During the Perfuma ep, I found myself thinking "oh my GOD, I feel so strong watching Adora just Punch Everything and Everyone. Is this what dudes watching action entertainment feel like ALL THE TIME???" And yeah, the original designs were all Glamazons, it's nice to see how much they were able to change them while still keeping their core design elements in tact!! SCORPIA IS SO LOVELY. My friend and I were losing our minds over her. Even a ton of the background characters look great, like the red horned bull lady who tries to football tackle Adora in the ep where she first gets to Brightmoon. Omg. and the BALL. The Fright Zone does feel super nostalgic! You're right! I couldn't figure out how. It reminds me of a few things, partially video games and partially TV shows, but yeah. Very much a callback to older cartoons in aesthetic.
I'm super super curious about the storyline... I hope it's not just a "I WANT TO BE POWERFUL" sort of thing, I like villains with more motivation than that. I: Catra has a good amount of depth so far, it's a complicated line of experiences that have led her here. Whattya think's gonna go down with her?
I want to like the intro theme more, but I think it's something about a couple of the notes that just don't hit right for me >_< I wish I was more musically inclined so I could figure it out, lmao
I'M SUPER SATISFIED TOO! I also love that it's inclusive without being unintentionally racist or having bad implications. Like, to compare, the recent seasons of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic has dragons being on the same level as ponies...but in equestria girls, ponies turn into humans and dragons turn into dogs. Among other examples, this can be seen as surprisingly more dehumanizing than if they had simply kept dragons as a separate mythical creature and not tried to go the diverse route (it gets worse when ponies have a fully functioning society with complex things and then there are yaks who are portrayed as stubborn/stupid/slow...) Also, in that show the races are seen as separate and it is often called out, even as they attempt to portray being inclusive. By contrast, She-Ra doesn't make it strange that there are people of other colors or races. Humans, half-animal people, fairies, etc. are all just together and it's never called strange or weird. People of the same sex get together and nobody says "HEY THAT'S WRONG" or "BUT UR BOTH GURLZ" it's just accepted and it's so rereshing to not have it thrown in the viewer's face that things work differently in this world. I really appreciate it, especially since I sometimes still have trouble accepting myself for who and what I am. And the body types!!! My mother is especially happy about that, and so am I. No one has a teeny waist. Adora and other princesses have MUSCLES! Some are overweight, some are thinner, but even the thinnest of them looks like a real person and not Barbie. I'm really happy about that because I know firsthand how seeing the unrealistic bodies for women in most media can leave a negative impact on a person. I've seen people insisting that it's JuSt A sTyLe and that if people were drawn with more realistic body proportions then cartoons would be UgLy. I'm glad She-Ra proves that argument wrong!
I wouldn't necessarily mind a villain who just wants to be powerful to be honest, because these days there are no villains like that any more. Like, every villain has a stragic sob story about their past and it's like, I appreciate that for some, but now it's almost getting overplayed? And a lot of people use that to justify the villains being "the good guys all along!!!" Sometimes people are just bad. Sometimes people really do just want more power. I think a good example in this from She-Ra is Shadow Weaver. She actually did just want more power and Hordak was able to give it to her. I want to know more about his motivations too, but I wouldn't mind if he turned out to be almost a Joker-esque villain, where he does have a simple motivation or none at all, just wanting to destroy for the sake of destruction. I also hope it's not just a patriarchy thing though. "I want to subjugate women because they're inferior" would be a little too cheesy for this show. I'm sure they have a much better plot lined up and Hordak's plans will be revealed over time though! I do wonder if Catra might overthrow him and become the actual leader, but my biggest bet is that Catra is also a princess who was stolen from her kingdom as a baby. She might even be the last of her kind. I think the revelation will stun her and she'll reject the title and try to throw herself further down the path of evil before eventually getting redeemed. (This might even be how the second season finale goes down! It would make sense to have this BIG BOOM REVELATION and then have to wait for the next season to see how it plays out!)
I feel like the last line in the theme of "We must be strong" could be changed to something like "United as One" and be more powerful.
Oh. oh fun. -_- I loved the first couple seasons of MLP, but it really just. I mean I can't say it shouldn't have continued, since it's geared towards kids anyway, but the original creator fell off board and it's just sad to see where shows go from there. especially cause implications like that can get weird.
But yeah! She-ra doesn't even bother offering any inherently Weird implications like that, I love the ball scene so much, all the different types of characters attending together and coupling up and they just!!! Look so cool!!! The body type variation alone is so wonderful, but on top of that we have so many horns and spikes and wings and djshajkfdhskadh it's so neat. I'm glad She-ra was able to quell that too, yeah, cause cartoons can look any kinda way and find a way to be appealing, and it's important to use that sometimes to give representation a chance to shine. I honestly didn't even realize how starved I was for stuff like that till I saw Steven Universe and was like, oh my god, they're my size??? they're my shape??? and She-ra pushed it to even more realistic territory by that standard ;v;
I suppose that's fair in the context of all these shows around, yeah. Oooooooh, I could even see the discovery of being a long lost princess could also throw her into more turmoil that causes some serious evil backlash before some sort of a redemption, like a denial/guilt resurgence before the end??? I just need to see, I am super stoked.
Yeah, that might sound better!
I think if it ended at season 3 or 4 it would have been a satisfying enough conclusion. The real problem is that it went on too long, got new writers who didn't know all the old things that happened, and they started running out of ideas and began throwing things at the wall to see what would stick (and nothing really quite stuck). It's still superior to generation 3 of My Little Pony, but I hear they're rebooting soon in 2020 with a 5-year-plan so it'll hopefully avoid the previous issues of this generation and end up being a more tightly written story or something.
She-ra I have really high hopes for, I doubt it'll go through seasonal rot of that kind (I think part of MLP's problem was there was no overarching story and they kept trying to shove ones in, thus a lot of the issues) because it has a defined plot and it knows whatg it wants to be. I also love the spikes and wings and variations; I think there are zodiac based princesses and that Catra is the Leo one. Steven Universe was one of the first body positive cartoons I can remember with diversity; I'm very excited that She-Ra takes it to the next level with bodies that seem more realistic and are a bit less stylized (at least in the respect that there aren't characters with emoji's for heads...) It's great!
I'm so stoked too. I wonder when season 2 will be. I guess October of next year... (cri) but I can wish for it to be sooner.
I hope the season 2 intro is different--I like when seasons update their intro's according to new developments. I'd like to see the best friends squad and super pal trio together in the intro and stuff! They don't necessarily have to change the song...might be ok if they did though. But at least if they switched up the animation a bit that would be really cool!
I watched it the other week, I liked it so much I managed to watch all 13 episodes in one day.
Also, season 2 will be out near the end of April. I can't wait to see where it goes...
