NATIONAL TAKE A HIKE DAY

Grab your hiking boots, the dog, a couple of energy bars, and some water! On November 17, it’s National Take a Hike Day, an annual event designed to get you outdoors for some fresh air, scenery, and exercise. America alone has 60,000 miles of trails in the National Trail System!

For a couple of hours on the trail, you can look at actual scenery instead of pretty scenic pictures on your computer screensaver. Breathe deeply and remember that life does exist outside boxes. On a hike, check out the birds that you don't see in the city or near your home. There may be all kinds of wildlife scurrying around you in a parallel universe where humans only reside on the periphery. Look at the vistas as you walk and marvel at the formations of the clouds. You never know what you’ll see out on the trail!

Mid-November, what an odd choice for National Take A Hike Day! I thought maybe I was being grossly American-centric in my thinking (obviously, the weather is nice somewhere on the globe) but I looked it up and apparently this is a North American thing. If it was up to me, I'd be promoting hiking in spring or summer, but ok... XD Just last Tuesday, I decided to pay a visit to one of my favorite local hiking and rockhounding spots and took off on the spur of the moment. Turned out, both of the forest access roads that would take me there were already closed for the winter. I did discover a neat park with a lake to take a walk around in lieu of my planned destination but it didn't hold the same promise of finding quartz and amethyst crystals. Yay for fresh mountain air, though!

(I make a lot of hiking HAs so I tried to make this one a little different. More colorful and whatnot. There wasn't a lot of wildlife to be seen, but there are always bugs. I didn't see any this colorful this week but let's pretend for the sake of a pretty HA lol. Notice the sky is threatening rain because this is Washington.)

I got sick with a cold so I'm stuck inside, but it snowed and it's beautiful; I wish I could be out there irl!

We're actually planning on "hiking" around the zoo today. Getting outside now that it's slightly cooler out, enjoying some fresh air, and seeing some animals. I actually really enjoy hiking, but I don't really do it all that often. When I think of hiking, I think of walking through forests and up mountains, none of which we have here. Hiking would consist of staying away from water (alligators... yikes), and wearing an entire can of bug spray to fend off the mosquitoes (gross). Plus, you would definitely need a shower when finished due to the humidity... It's just not a fun activity here in south Florida.

On my Subeta hike though, my dog and I have hiked up a beautiful mountain to enjoy seeing the leaves changing. On our way, we have encountered a wide variety of birds. We would stop several times along our path just to sit and watch all of the different types of birds. <3
