Two weeks ago, I got a call from a rescue group, looking to home a single ferret. I was overly excited. So much so we have already considered adopting her as soon as we get her.

Ive spent the last few days reading up on ferrets, and there seems to be a lot of the same information on these sites. Some seem almost to copy/paste each other.

I like to get owner details. So anyone who owns or has owned a ferret, any details or information would be awesome! Stories you have on your ferrets and what its been like to have one.

((We also currently have 3 cats in the house. 1 Older (who will probably hide from it) 1 middle (Whos my big boy) and 1 kitten (whos a hyper kitten)).

Ferrets are very social! My first ferret experience happened when I came across a posting on Craigslist for free Ferrets. The picture was horrid! They looked dirty and the cage was full of excrement. It was a bonded pair. A boy and a girl who I renamed Marley and Vlad. There was so much for me to learn. Now years later I have had 6 ferrets in total and I can honestly tell you that I have had no better companions. A few things I would recommend are: Having a decent amount of time to spend on cleaning up after them. Even if they are potty trained they tend to make a mess in litter and my ferrets always used to love to make a good mess. No matter what anybody tells you it is not okay to feed them cat food. It isn’t nutritional whole for them. Ferrets are super prone to cancer and having a healthy diet can combat the chances of that. Tea tree shampoo is amazing!!! They sell it at most pet stores and it makes your ferrets smell minty! I always preferred free range living to caged only because I’d find them almost anywhere. It was like a happy surprise. Once I found them asleep in my nightstand drawer! I have no clue how they got in since the drawers were shut but the little rascals did chew up my brand new headphones before they passed out. Sigh. Oh, and also, ferrets do this very strange thing where they fall into a very deep sleep and it’s EXTREMELY difficult to wake them. Nothing is wrong so don’t worry! Do you have any specific questions? Also, congratulations on your new addition!

Thank you for your info and sharing your experience. Its what I was looking for!

The few photos of the ferret, she seems to be ok. Shes in a medium sized cage (and I already have a friend with a extremely larger cage for her). But her toe nails look untrimmed and she looks like she needs a bath. I have read some on the feeding, and that they are carnivores and enjoy meat based food (not fish). Once we get her home and see what all she does have, I plan on making a good trip to our local Pet Smart to get her some odds and ends.

When she first gets there, we plan on leaving her caged until we get a feel for her personality and getting her used to us. My husband works part time, so he will be able to spend a lot of time with her in a closed off room, to make sure she gets out and plays. We also have 3 cats, and I want to get her used to us, before we release her into the house (with well watched supervision) to see how the cats deal with her.

LOL I did not know about the extreme sleep. I had a rabbit that would do that. OMG its freaky scary the first time. Esp when you pick them up and they are just like non responsive.

Ive done a lot of online reading, but was mainly looking for personal stories and do and donts that people have experienced with their ferrets and how they are. ^.^
