COLUMBUS DAY[/b]

In fourteen hundred ninety-two, Columbus sailed the ocean blue!

This holiday is a way of honoring Columbus’ achievements. It is beyond debate that he was one of the worlds famous discoverers throughout the centuries. (Politics and colonisation wrongfulness is another theme, though).

Christopher Columbus was an Italian-born explorer who set sail in August 1492, bound for Asia with backing from the Spanish monarchs King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella. Columbus intended to chart a western sea route to China, India and the fabled gold and spice islands of Asia.

Instead, on October 12, he landed in the Bahamas, becoming the first European to explore the Americas since the Vikings established colonies in Greenland and Newfoundland during the 10th century.

Later that October, Columbus sighted Cuba and believed it was mainland China; in December the expedition found Hispaniola, which he thought might be Japan. There, he established Spain’s first colony in the Americas with 39 of his men. In March 1493, Columbus returned to Spain, bearing gold and spices. It wasn’t until his third journey that Columbus finally realized he hadn’t reached Asia but instead had stumbled upon a continent previously unknown to Europeans!

Challenge: Create a HA or HAs fitting the time Columbus lived in! Be it the captain itself, a mate or a native, attendants, queen, king, princess, prince or knight, farmer or any other profession. You could even create a whole bunch of people living in that era, related or not.

As always, you are allowed to use all wearables, CWs included, you don´t have to own them. Please use surroundings.

Please post the HA(s) here in the thread and don´t use HAs you already used for other Subeta contests before. Be creative!

End date is Friday 12th of October midnight Subeta time or when Morostide starts.

Have fun and happy sailing!

Given that Columbus & the people sponsoring him were genocidal slavers, I really wanted to do something... not that, so I decided to do some research on the Bahamas before Columbus's arrival.

The first people he met upon arriving in the Bahamas were the Lukku-Cairi, latinised to Lucayan, the only people occupying the Bahamas at the time. The only surviving records of them are from Columbus's journals and archaeological digs, and there's not much by way of articles on them, either, so I mostly went off the wikipedia page.

This page states, "Women past puberty wore a small skirt of cotton, and the men might wear a loincloth made of plaited leaves or cotton. Some people wore head bands, waist bands, feathers, bones and ear and nose jewelry on occasion. They were often tattooed and usually applied paint to their bodies and/or faces. [...] "Their hair was black and straight, and they kept it cut short except for a few hairs in back which were never cut."

From later in the article, "The Lucayans made fish hooks from bone or shell and harpoon points from bone." In another article I found an excerpt from Columbus's journal, which states "I kept my eyes open and tried to find out if there was any gold, and I saw that some of them had a little piece hanging from a hole in their nose."

From these meager descriptions I did my best to recreate what a young Lukku-Cairi woman might look like.

Very shortly after Columbus's arrival the Spanish started taking the Lukku-Cairi as slaves, resulting in an extreme depopulation and by 1520 they were completely gone from the Bahamas.

I don't know how to deal with these horrors of history. I feel like the least I can do is try to represent it accurately and avoid perpetuating the lasting social effects of the horrorshow America is built on whenever I can: blatant racism, yes, but also the more subtle things: the stereotype of the "noble savage," ignorance of what happened and the fact that it still has consequences, the thought that it doesn't matter. It does matter, because its effects are so deeply rooted. The ground upon which we stand is soaked with blood. I don't know what to do about it. I really don't.

Sorry to get so real, but I feel like you have to with Columbus day. You have to know what that name means. It's like celebrating Hitler day. And it's our whole culture's fault that so many people just don't think about that. We've taught ourselves to ignore it.

So, here's a young woman on her way to go fishing. A few years later she was likely taken as a slave just because someone could.

Last day for entering this contest. During Morostide, there won´t be many contests because we´re all so preoccupied with ToTing and other contests in the Moro forum! ^-^

Thank you so much for partizipating in the contest, my lovelies! I know Columbus actions are discussed controversional, that´s why I concededed that a great deal of colonisation wrongfulness were also done here. I pondered some hours if this date would be worth a contest, yet for history, he´ll be one of the greatest discoverers of his time and it was more the time the contest was referring to and not Columbus as a person himself alone.

Here are all your beautiful HAs together:

🎉 Congrats to
