So I overheard a conversation the other day of a woman complaining about teenagers dressing up and going out trick-or-treating for candy. I had no idea it was an issue, and even remember going out when I was in highschool.
Personally, I'd think people who go out when they are older make it fun - you can scare them, they probably aren't wearing the generic Disney-movie-character-of-the-season costume from Walmart, etc.
What are your guy's thoughts? Is there an age cutoff?
Idk, I think the idea is that once you're a teenager you're old enough to just buy your own candy. I can see both sides, but I don't care if a teenager shows up at my door on Halloween. It's just fun to go trick or treating, since it's more about the experience, than the candy itself. I was bummed out when I got too old to trick or treat. I think the last time I went I was 16 or 17, but I didn't look my age and I'm short, so I doubt anyone thought I was too old anyway. The way I see it, I'd rather have teenagers going trick or treating than them go out drinking and driving.
Imho, there's no age cutoff. Everyone needs a night to just have fun. Sure, people can, will and go love to take advantage of it but... I agree with , better to do something like that than drink and drive Halloween night.

Pfft, you're never too old to trick-or-treat as far as I'm concerned. I'd still be doing it if I had someone to go with me. Last time I went I was 18 and ran around with a bunch of friends around the same age. We got a few weird looks and some "aren't you a little too old for this?" type comments but we shrugged them off. Wouldn't people rather teenagers be ToTing instead of getting drunk and causing trouble (which we never did, we were harmless nerds)? It's not so much about the candy as it is the experience -- it's just fun and you never outgrow Halloween!
I think the last time I went I was 16? Me and two friends dressed up and went out and had a blast. I don't really think there's a cutoff as long as someone's dressed up and puts in the effort as opposed to just showing up in regular clothes holding a pillow case haha!
I hate that it's socially unacceptable for adults to trick or treat. To me, you don't grow out of a love for halloween, and adults like candy just as much. I love halloween specials and movies and just the general vibe. That's why I love being on subeta and dressing my avatar and getting to do a trick or treat event. I was forced to stop trick or treating before I was even a teenager because I was "too old"... Like middle school was my cut off.
i think it's weirdly petty to be picky about who gets candy you pass out for halloween. you can't tell who's going to be a very short teen/adult or a very tall fifth grader.
i'd be annoyed if a teen or adult expected candy just because they showed up and had like, a pillowcase or something. i did that once or twice when i was high school age with a bad attitude. i regret it now but i'm happy the adults passing out candy didn't flat out turn me away. but like... it's just candy. it's not that big a deal. it's like on the same level of people in well-off neighborhoods being angry that kids from less well-off neighborhoods come to their homes to trick or treat.
If I recall, I was no longer allowed to ToT as soon as middle school ended. My little brother was cut-off shorter than me which is sad. Our neighbourhoods that give candies are scarce now. We had to walk further and further each year until we were pretty much turned off. Halloween is my favourite holiday but I can't ToT anymore and I kind of miss it? People my age are all about drinking and going to huge parties I'm never going to (and never get invited lmao) Which is why, when I'm 'settled' ... I will give candies. It's fun and only once a year after all!
Unfortunately I don't live in a trick-or-treat capable zone right now but the times I did my rule was simple: come with a costume, say trick-or-treat, I'll make it RAIN! And usually had very few trick-or-treaters so people cleaned up with me. I always hope to see teenagers in the mix because that means they are getting in some wholesome fun on a holiday that seems to get more and more gruesome every year.
I wish there were more fun options for adults these days. My options are parties that start late and end late, driving out to the local farms and doing a corn maze, or haunted houses. Not a fan, and can't get to the corn mazes.
I wish I could just /walk/ into a Halloween party at someone’s house, if I’m too old to trick or treat. I just like seeing different houses.

I stopped trick or treating when I was 16 personally. My older brother, on the other hand, continued until his last year of high school at 18 and then he stopped because well, university. He did get pretty lazy the last couple years. From 15 on he pretty much just re-used the same werewolf mask each year to trick or treat and that was it, he didn’t throw on anything else, costume wise. I didn’t really get too old comments but I’m 5’3”, Asian and for a good portion of high school , even in my senior year, many still assumed I was 13-14 so... My older brother was still getting candy at 17-18, even when some commented he was too old but none in our suburban neighborhood outright didn’t give him anything though.
Teenagers continuing to trick or treat at 15-18 is still better than them going off to parties and getting drunk or in trouble so the way I see it, let them have their candy.
I stopped trick or treating at 11 because someone on my street told me I was “too old” to be trick or treating and they were very nasty about it. I ended up never feeling okay going again.
So many people in my school kept trick or treating well into high school but that one person just made me feel so bad about it that I never went again.
For me as long as people are in costumes when they come to my door I’ll give them candy.
Last time I went I was 17 or 18. I went with some older friends as well. It was fun but we got a lot of nasty looks. Didn't bother me though. We weren't up to any trouble, just genuinely wanted to tot. We all dressed up too. Now that I'm a homeowner and pass out candy every year, I get plenty of older teens. I don't mind and don't judge, everyone gets a huge handful of candy when they come to my door!
My friends and I went out trick or treating until we were 21 :D It was way funner than hitting up parties or walking around Waikiki with the drugged out freaks. But we stopped as we got older because we all grew up and started taking on more "adult" responsibilities. We don't hand out candy however because no one comes up our street as we live at the top of a hill with what feels like a 45 degree incline. But my husband will still buy candy because its....well candy. He eats most of it too.
I'll add here a lot of the smaller children go TOT at the malls (cut off is 10 years old at the mall I think) here because its safer and warmer, since we usually have snow here by Halloween. So a lot of the kids TOTing are older and many teens go around the neighbourhoods instead of lots of little kids.
I’ve had some teens (and an adult I think, I’m not sure though. Poor guy lost a bet and was so nervous his palms were sopping wet! He was a sweetie though) come to my house before, and personally I’m all for it! It’s a night to get dressed up, have fun, and indulge in the spooky and scary things in this world (regardless of if you believe in those things or not).
It’s more fun that way, and this world doesn’t value fun enough. Someone is either too sensitive or too uptight. I personally prefer my spot in the middle. ^^ I say you’re never too old to have fun (and get free candy), just as long as there is SOME effort put into a costume. I mean, just a bit, it IS Halloween after all.
that why u have kids and take there candy :P hahahahaha problem solved
Forgive me, I'm not sure what the necroposting rules are here.
I used to be unsure but last year my family got me to go trick or treating with my 5-year-old niece, full-on with my own candy collecting. It was slightly awkward and only one giver, in particular, a little girl seemed uncomfortable with giving me candy (she just stared at me and her parent/guardian had to tell her to give me candy) but otherwise, no one cared.
It was awesome. I wasn't even wearing an elaborate costume since I wasn't expecting to participate, just devil horns and a tail.
I can get the perception that, at a certain age, you could possibly just go out and buy your own candy.
But honestly, trick or treat is a great neighborhood activity for all ages, in my opinion. You're still walking all throughout the neighborhood in the cold of night wearing a costume in order to scout out some goodies to take home. Heck, I've known groups who'd have a friend drive them to all the upscale neighborhoods to try and get all the treats they can carry. It can be as casual or as hardcore an activity as you want it.
I myself haven't been trick or treating much, but that's because I like to try and make the trick-or-treating a little more fun for those who come to my door. I usually get a Halloween theme and put on a little act as I give out candy. I feel it makes it more memorable and fun rather than just 'here you go, happy halloween'.
But yeah, point being, no, so long as we're all being respectful and nice, you're never too old for Trick or Treating
