Muggle studdies was meeting in a special location in a field in Hogesmede. "Hello all, Professor Cassandra Brookvale here. Today's topic is the telephone. First we start off by saying when we speak our voices carry sound waves. The device called the telephone transmits that sound wave from one location to another." She projected an image of a telephone onto the screen.
"This is a more basic telephone and is often referred to as a land line. This is because it is tethered to one location by the use of wires called a telephone wire. But now muggles have invented telephones that are very advanced so advanced that not only do they no longer need to be physically attached to a wire but they can now do far more complex things. These phones are called mobile phones because they are portable and fit easily into a pocket or purse." Another picture came up.

"As you can see, this is a mobile phone. I picked a more basic explanation, so hopefully this won't get anyone too much in a muddle. You can see that this phone has a camera as well as other things like games. Muggles call the extras Apps or Applications. So.. now, pair up and pick up a smart phone. Everyone has a phone number on the back of their phone. Call your partner, talk to them and explore the functions of your phone. Don't worry, I've spelled these beauties so they shouldn't break. If you have any questions, just call on me."
*Give me more than just a few sentences. In what way was your student successful/not successful. What did they learn? Things they found and liked or disliked and so on. *Have fun. Seriously, I want this to be a fun one. :) *Keep it PG-13. And no finding inappropriate websites please.
[edit] Please comment me if you wish to use two of your own characters. I will approve it on a case by case--since I would prefer partners.
Merlin Pendragon, Slytherin
When Merlin heard what the class was about he got excited, he knew smart phones since he had one himself. He has slowly learned to use it and now considered himself pretty good at it. He dialed the number of his partner ( ) Magnus for a video chat. "Hey Mag! How ya doing? This class will be so easy! Want to try a game? Let's do one of those silly games you put your phone in the head with the question and answer! " Then he thought that was lame. "Nah, better just text message you pictures of my pets, oh but I don't have the pictures on this phone, never mind. What can we do with the phones? Do rpgs on Subeta? We can browse silly videos on the tube place, like the ones with crazy cats and stuff, yeah? I like the crazy cats videos." He showed Magnus one. "I loved the cat fighting with the cat statue." Merlin laughed.
Magnus was giggling himself. He had lived grown up with telephones and also had a smart phone. He answered the video phone with easy. "I love it. Just kickin' me feet up and chillin." He snickered at Merlin. "Oh 'ave you seen the video with the crab vs the fidget spinner? That's so weird. We could use a game site and play a game against each other, like battleship?"
"I haven't seen it, show me and then we play battle..ship? or something cute like pet salon. No I have never played Pet salon." Merlin blushed. "Is there even a game with that name? Maybe we can play battleship." Merlin laughed, he did played a game with pets but had no idea how it was called.
Magnus sent him the link. "A pet salon game? Like braiding my little pony's hair?" Magnus was amused. "Maybe you can find me the game? We can share screens so see each other play."
"It's like this." Merlin said blushing. "You wash, you groom and give a little bow or something."

Callista was overjoyed, even though she was quite adept at using a mobile phone. Finally they were getting to the important stuff about the Muggle world. "Professor Brookvale... do you mind if I use my own? And how are we able to use them in here? If you've got a trick for that, I'd love to know what it is. I promise I won't be texting in class or anything."
She took her phone out of her school bag and set it on the desk, then thought about Blade, wishing he could be there. He'd wanted to learn about her phone so badly. She glanced around the room, trying to decide who she wanted to be partners with. It'd be easy to pick someone else who also used a phone frequently, but she thought it might be better to pick someone who probably didn't know anything about phones, whom she would be able to help.
Then she overheard Merlin talking about his cats. "Psst. Merlin. If you've uploaded any of those cat pictures, like to Imgur, or if you have Instagram, you should be able to send them to Magnus from there."
Callista Zabini / Slytherin

Magnus couldn't help but snicker a little. "Aww it looks so cute." It was so Merlin. He found the game, with a little difficulty. "Found it Merls, now to whoop your booty in my pet styling prowess." He smirked. Then Callista told Merlin how to show him the pictures. "Ooh yeah didn't think about internet. But I've seen 'is pets all the time. 'E's got like 9,000 pets," he said exaggeratedly.
"I had to ask people to please refrain from magic for our lesson so that we could have a better chance of getting things to work. Of course you can use your own phone dear," Brookvale replied.
Just then Blade appeared. He looked like he couldn't believe he was actually there.
Entry of Parker Lange () and Elizabeth Amalia Covington (); both of House Slytherin 🐍 Information: Parker's parts are written in silver, Elizabeth's in green.
Witness young witches dealing with a rather mysterious muggle device!

Elizabeth looked at what the Professor called a mobile phone. She had seen her friend Lotta playing around with this device and they had watched some videos on it, took pictures or listened to music...but she hardly had any idea how to make work this out on her own. It had taken a lot of work to convince her parents to get a land line at least - Lotta had found it strange and suspicious that a family nowadays didn't have a phone. So, basically, the phone was only used by Elizabeth to call Lotta or receive calls from her - the latter happened way more often since Elizabeth preferred to just turn up at the bakery and ask if Lotta was home.
Carefully, she picked up the mobile phone and turned it around, looking at the long number. This was, in fact, strange. She gently touched the screen, just like Lotta did, and the device came to life. A bright picture of a monument was in the background and little symbols were scattered on the screen. A clock was there, too. She spotted something she remembered - a little camera icon. As she tapped on the symbol, the screen turned into a small mirror instead. That must be the photography mirror Lotta always used to take pictures of them without having to ask someone else - though it did look a bit strange to have your arm stuck out in the air to take a picture, but it seemed to be a normal thing in the muggle world. She sighed and looked around for a potential partner, her eyes stopping at the red-haired Slytherin girl. She had seen her a few times in the common room, reading books about the sea and its creatures. Elizabeth stood up and walked over to her. "Hello. Do you want to work with me for this lesson?", she asked Parker Lange.
Outfit Not Found "Oh! Yes please, thanks. Hello Elizabeth," Parker answered happily. Finding a partner wasn't easy sometimes, especially when she was in her quiet mood. She was glad she had dressed with care for the lesson that day, although she was noticing that her new shoes had slippery laces. It looked like many of her classmates were engrossed in taking Muggle pictures of themselves with the smartphone devices.
Parker had seen Muggles using their smartphones before but had never even held one. It felt solid and fragile all at once. She copied what Elizabeth showed her about the phone so far and tried to become accustomed to touching the screen just so with her fingertips. A pink camera icon (Instagram) looked intriguing. Parker leaned over to Elizabeth to show her the pictures it opened up to when she touched it. "This app seems to be for Muggles to share their pictures with each other. Some of the images even move like ours, but just on a simple loop. Oh wow, what a handsome Muggle," she giggled and hoped she didn't seem too silly to her Head Girl.
"Wonderful", Elizabeth said and smiled. "I like your shoes by the way. They look comfortable and the colour is very fitting." She became curious when Parker showed her the pictures on the application and chuckled on the comment about the handsome Muggle. "He surely is handsome.", she whispered amused. "All the people on the pictures look so happy and carefree. I see no frowns, it's like everyone is having the time of their lives. Isn't that strange?"
“Thank you,” Parker replied. “I pretty much live in trainers.”
“You’re right. I guess Muggles can be as competitive about their happiness and success as wizards can.” Parker studied the pictures. “Some of these images seemed to have been altered quite a bit too. This Muggle here isn’t as slim as he’s made himself out to be.”
"They are comfy", Elizabeth said, as there was nothing wrong with preferring trainers.
Elizabeth seemed surprised. "How do you spot it if they altered their pictures?", she asked a bit confused. "I only know that my muggle friend at home sometimes taps on the picture and it changes colour...like, first it's black and white, then the colours are still there, but not as saturated as before...it's a bit strange, don't you think?"
"Do you see how the surrounding lines parallel and his body don't match up? Also, there's just a strange airbrushed quality to only certain portions of the image. It's hard to explain but you can spot that it's been altered without much scrutiny. I bet some are so good that you wouldn't notice at all." Parker picked her head up and stretched. Her right shoulder cracked with a satisfying roll. The smartphone was fun, but it definitely seemed like something that one could become too engrossed in. Time went by so quickly when browsing that she had barely been aware that they were in class, and now she had a vaguely guilty feeling from wasting so much time playing with a device.
Parker refocused on the task at hand and scrolled a bit to refresh the images in the feed. "Oh! The color thing sounds neat! Like this one here?"
Elizabeth looked carefully at the things Parker pointed out to her. She noticed some blurry spots in the image as well and was wondering why people where not that careful when modifying their pictures - weren't they trying to look more perfect? It seemed so strange to her.
She looked over to Parker then. "Yes, that's what I meant! The way the colours of the pictures are changed reminds me of the photographs in The Daily Prophet.", she said and smiled at a short video someone uploaded to his profile. "Isn't it cute? As if it was a kind of magic on its own Hogwarts is unaware of." Elizabeth said with a gracious smile and put the smartphone down on the table, watching it fondly as the screen's colours faded and then turned to leave nothing but a black, reflective screen.
Merlin listened to Callista and nodded. "I don't have those things imugugur or instalpram. But thanks I will look it up." Merlin smiled, he have learned something new in the class after all.
"They look cute in the end, it's too bad you can't add your own pets to do the bath and dress up. Imagine Fog or Spellz taking the bath and then with a little hat or tie." Merlin grinned, he thought it was cute. "I don't have so many! I wish." Merlin giggled. "But I think I have like 50 pets...well I actually have 37. Truly, I only bring a few because I can't bring them all. Plus Mag, you have a ton of pets too!"
"Instalpram?" Magnus asked. "What's that? Sounds like something to wheel babies in like a strange pram." He nodded about the pet game. "Yeah it'd be cute if they did something like that. I don't 'ave a ton of pets. I 'ave a least ten less than you." He snickered because 20 pets were still a lot.
"I suppose we have to google instalpram to see what it is. If it's to wheel a baby I doubt it's for pictures then." Merlin laughed. "Yeah well you still have lots of pets even if a bit less than me."

"Thanks, Professor!"
Callista showed Merlin her phone. "Instagram is this app. Imgur is a website, imgur.com, where you can store pictures, but not if they're private, because anyone can see them."
Then she looked up and saw Blade.
"Blade? I didn't think--" No, wait, she wasn't going to say that in class. "Come over here and sit with me, you wanted to learn to use the phone anyway!"
((OOC: I so didn't mean to flake on people. I got sick on Saturday, there was a lolita thing on Sunday and afterward I was dead tired because still ill, and at work yesterday I was super busy. Sorry!))

"That makes more sense than a baby wheel," Magnus said. "Yeah I guess I do ave a few pets."
Blade shyly came over to Callista. "Hi. Er yeah. I got one from Granddad in the mail. Arrived yesterday afternoon." He pulled a box out of his bag. It was an Iphone ten with a custom protective cover of music notes.

Callista was impressed. "That is a really nice phone, Blade! It's newer than mine. Your grandfather seems really kind. How are you doing with it?"

"He is," Blade replied. In fact he was the one Blade felt the most connected to in his family. "Er, I haven't figured out how work it. I speak to it and nothing happens, I shake it..." He didn't know it had to be turned on.

"Let me see if it's charged. Did you put a lock code on it yet?" Callista held out her hand. "I should probably apologise for being nosey but I was really worried about you back in Hogsmeade. I know we don't know each other really well yet, but I consider you a friend. I didn't think you were even allowed to come to this class. I'm glad they changed their minds."

"A what code?" Blade asked blankly. "I can't activate it at all." He handed her the phone. "I did connect the solar thingy to it and let it work during herbology. I figured you must have chatted with him. He thinks you sound nice. Well, the rules changed recently so I'm allowed now. I admit though, I am surprised you consider me a friend. Not in a bad way though. Just surprised."

"You've seen me be a total idiot and still like me, plus we're friends with each other's friends. Why not be friends?" Callista smiled. "This is the button you push to turn it on. This icon here looks like an old-fashioned land line phone and when you touch it, you can call people, but you have to know their numbers. Hopefully your grandfather put his number into the phone so you could call and text him. I'll put mine in, too, for you, so you can practise calling me. I don't know what time it is in Germany but I know they're just a little ahead of us, not like Japan or America. Still, your grandfather might be busy in the middle of the school and work day!"
She entered her number and her name with it. "And there's your grandfather's number. This evening, before curfew but after classes are over, go outside or up to the tower, as far from the main castle as you can, and push this number here and it will dial him up. But first, call me, and I'll answer. You don't have to talk loud once I pick up, you're not talking into the fire. Actually, first I'll call you."
Callista rang his number. He had kind of a boring ringtone, but first things first. "Now, touch that right there to answer my call and hold it up to your ear. Then you'll hear me talking to you on the phone."

(-also has android- I have a Samsung 8 +)
"Well you put it that way," Blade said giving her a cocky smirk, "and it makes sense-- I was an idiot myself after all."
He listened to her explanations and nodded. He touched the icon like she said and managed to get it on the screen. He saw her name and smiled. "Neat." Then he put his ear on the middle of the phone. "Hey Callie... can you hear me in this?" he asked.
