So, the other night I was messing around in Spotify and I ended up making two playlists: one that reminded me of elementary school, and one that reminded me of middle school. It was so nice to sit there listening to songs I haven't heard in forever, going "Oh man, this one reminds me of that road trip I went on with my friend to Florida." or "Oh my god, EVERYBODY sang this for their solo exam in chorus. I swear I've heard middle schoolers sing this more than the artist!"
Does anyone else really enjoy hanging out listening to old music that reminds them of ages ago? What genre makes up the most of your former years? For me, elementary school was largely grunge and alternative, while middle school was a lot of rap/r&b, pop and alternative.
I still love grunge so much, man. It has this feeling that's like, equal parts dusty and comforting. It kinda reminds me of the small attic room that my best friend at the time had attached to her bedroom. We'd climb up there and listen to music, and it was so nice to have our own little hideaway. It was only a fraction of the attic, but it was ours!
Some of the songs also remind me fondly of summer, which baffles me because you will not catch me outside my house between May and October now. How young me ever stood the heat is a mystery.
One word: Evanescence.
Oh, the TEEN ANGST, but Amy Lee's voice is so melodic, I can't help but appreciate her vocal talent, even when it's a "WAKE ME UP INSIDE" meme.
On the flip side, Crunk and Dirty South hip hop also have a place on my nostalgic playlist. If Lil Jon and the Ying Yang Twins starts playing, you best believe I will be shaking it like a salt shaker. Mmm hmm.
