My fiancé and I are moving from Virginia to Colorado! 1,800 miles away! I’m so excited. New job, new city, new people, more space for our hobbies. I’m not scared at all - I’m so looking forward to it all. Well, not everything...I’m dreading the drive!
I know some people here have moved cross-country, different continents, and different countries. Were you excited? Terrified? Both? How’d you adapt to everything? Any tips for me? I’m driving there first in 3 weeks and he’ll come in September when our current apartment lease is up.
My family moved from FL to MN when I was a kid (about 20 some odd years ago), so my scenario isn't as relevant. And as I moved around a lot as a kid, it wasn't such a hardship for me. My sister detested making new friends though. I just didn't care.
Congratulations on taking such a big leap!! That's a lot of distance. What made you want to pick up and move?
, I know you've made a big move. Any input? :)
Congrats on the move! I've stayed on the east coast pretty much my entire life--no idea what that's like. Wishing you a good move! Also seconding the 's question--why the move? Job reasons?
Yes!! I moved about 1700 miles from NC to MN this April/May :D
I was so excited! I had my hubby's job and his family here though to it made it a lot easier to adjust ^^; the drive was most definitely the worst haha! I suggest packing a small cooler with snacks/drinks for the front of the car (convenient and will save you money!) and audiobooks to pass the time. Also breaking it up into at least 2 days really helps; don't stress or push yourself out too much the first day. Also! Don't stress yourself to unpack as soon as you get there! You can totally just throw your matress on the floor and grab the basics you packed for the hotel night one and rest!!! (Because man...I was soo exhausted when I finally got to our house!) One of the best things imo we did was label the top (not side) of boxes with what room it went in instead of what is in it. It really helps you unload faster esspecially if you have others helping you and later helps you unpack more important rooms first instead of stuff that can wait such things that go in the attic/garage/even living room. Also I suggest finding a good moving checklist online to make sure you have everything before you and on for after you get there! Things like medical records can be easily forgotten and stuff like a driver's license update can be pushed aside after all the chaos moving.
Ohh!! Finally I suggest getting involved in local volenteering/book club/gym/whatever you like really as long as it's social :) it will make you feel a lot less isolated in your new community and make you feel more connected! I wish you the best of luck and if you need any tips/advice whatever feel free to ask :D <3
We went on vacation to CO two years ago and immediately agreed that it was home for us. We’re both very outdoorsy and, while Virginia has ok stuff to do, Colorado has way more opportunities for our hobbies. That and I have developed humidity-induced migraines so I have to take meds to even go outside because god knows the east coast is swampy. We’re also not very “southern” so we’ll meet more people like us (we’re both from upstate NY). I got a job out there and that’s why I’m leaving first. He’s sticking around here until our lease is up, then renting a U-Haul and him and his buddy are doing all the heavy lifting.
Thanks for the tips! I’m really dreading the drive by myself so I’m definitely stopping halfway (already have reservations at a pet-friendly hotel in Missouri). When we went there for vacation it was easier to split the driving between the two of us, but I’m not risking anything, especially the second day when I have to drive in those mountains asdfhjkl$&; I’ve been looking up packing tips and all the websites really emphasize being organized so I know at least I’ll be ok. I’m gonna start my new job as soon as I get there so I’ll be able to keep busy but yes I definitely want to find other, extracurricular stuff to do. Thanks again for the tips, like I said I’m not scared of the move at all, I’ve done a lot of research and feel really prepared, but anything to make the process easier is welcome!
