I got a puppy gave to me it wen't to the vet before I got it. The previous owner gave me it's meds and the pup finished them weeks ago. Ive had the pup since june 18th. A few days ago a lump came up on the pups hip.Hair was still there just a lump sticking out the lump had a soft center.Today I noticed the lump had changed.. There is no hair and it has a white/gray center and it is not as large as it was.

I bath the pup at least once a week with flea and tick shampoo. the pup is a cross between 2 small breeds. I am not sure if it is a hot spot or something else.. anyone ever heard of a lump with a soft center turn into a bald area with white/grey color in the middle?(center is no longer soft)

Update (july 8th) the center color is no longer white/grey it is now a black like color. It reminds me of a scab but its only in the center. the rest is a reddish color like a burn.

Update early morning (july 9th) Lump does not seem to bother pup. It is not much of a lump anymore. It is almost flat now. He might have gotten mosquito bit.. We do have those pesky things. and he goes out at night to play and potty..

I have not seen any worms in his poo. I have not seen any redness in his eyes. No lack of energy. No lack of appetite.

I wonder if the flea spray might help with it.. it is basically oils.. cinnamon oil, Eucalyptus oil, and other oils..

july 10th FINAL update spot is flat and it is healing. I have been using the flea spray to help with fleas and doing his flea baths. Applied some aloe Vera to it. Vet is next month he will get his flea pill then.

I would suggest taking it into a vet. It could be an ingrown hair that has gotten infected to a bug bite that is bad. To be on the safe side, I would run it into a vet to be sure. Exp if the hair around it has fallen out and its gotten bigger.

You dont want to wait, and it be something worse later down the line.

I'm with - the sooner the pup's seen by a vet, the better.

well it is not and has not had any fluid or anything come from it. the pup isn't due to go to the vet for a couple months. since its a young pup my vet does not want him exposed to other dogs till his immune system is built up. I did ask my vet and they said as long as the pup isn't in pain or the spot isn't draining or bleeding to give it a week and call back.

How often does the shampoo say its safe to use on dogs? Does it have any chart or info for how much to use based on the animals weight? It might be you're using the medicated shampoo TOO often and its irritated the skin there. Their skin is like ours. Sometimes a spot or two just doesn't react well to things. Also I bring this up, because did you know, in people if you used a medicated (aka with pesticides) shampoo for lice more than THREE times in 30 days you risk bringing on sensitivity or even illness reactions? You may want to see if you can make a repellant shampoo of your own using tea tree oil.

just says it's ph balanced and lasts up to 10 days (which it doesn't). Ive also bathed the pup in dawn dish soap a few times so not all the baths are flea and tick baths. The dish soap is safe to use ive asked my vet about it. I just use it to wash him when he gets dirty. he rolls in the dirt.. and likes to investigate everything.. so he gets all kind of nasty stuff on him. (live next to a cow field)

I have him on a dye free diet. SO I don't think it is a allergic reaction to his food. last owner kept switching his food brands constantly. I stick with one brand and it is dye free.

I will most likely be buying a different flea and tick shampoo since the one I have does not work..(found a tick on the pup and some fleas) I know Adams flea and tick shampoo does not work tried it in past.. and now know Sergeant's Skip-Flea & Tick shampoo does nothing..

Hmm as a reviewer can you possibly get samples of these things? For my cat I use the pet armor flea and tick drops and it works great without the cost that front line tends to have. Pet armor makes products for dogs too. Another thing might be to spray your property line and around the house to help reduce possible ticks or fleas getting picked up. There's also a fairly cheap home spray called Natural Care+ Flea and Tick. Iran are from botanical oils and it smells half decent that can be used on large unwashable items to help reduce the numbers where the pup sleeps and plays.

Enough on that though you asked about a lump. Its possible as stated above it could be a skin reaction or bug bite. However are there thorny plants near your home? Nests of any bees or the like? I had a dog that for some reason LOVED carpenter ants and bees. She would come in with sting bumps and ant bites and even some still stuck in her fur. Another thing I'm thinking of is the possible start of ring worm.

I have more than 10 acres so that would be a ton of spray.. Plus if my neighbors cows ate the grass (since there fence is against my property) that was sprayed and got sick or died that would not be good.

I can't get samples of medical supplies for animals. I am going to get him flea pills when he goes to the vet. There $22.00 for just one pill that lasts one month. Better deal than the other vet that wants $30.00 for the same exact pill. Plus my vet gives me a discount of my entire visit its only $5.00 off but it's better than nothing. My vet also does not charge a fee for just seeing the animal the other vet charges $10.00 for just seeing the animal.

So I get a good deal at my vet. Plus all the workers know me my Boston has wen't there since I got her when she was a pup. I have 2 dogs. The pup and the Boston. I had 2 Bostons but one passed away..(the breeder of the Bostons was basically a jerk. both dogs had health issues breeder didn't honor contract.) The Boston has a thing in the roof of her mouth which makes eating tater tots difficult for her. She can't eat hard treats. So she and the pup are on small breed dog food that's dye free (Boston has red dye allergy).

Lump does not seem to bother pup. It is not much of a lump anymore. It is almost flat now. He might have gotten mosquito bit.. We do have those pesky things. and he goes out at night to play and potty..

Oh and the Boston is fixed so no puppies. (her problems are in her genes the breeder is breeding dogs that should not be bred.)

I'm sorry for how this may sound, but in the last year you've made countless topics asking for advice on various issues, many surrounding having a low budget and needing help figuring out how to get what you need with a small amount of money... people have tried to help, and you've gotten very aggressive so I'm not really expecting anything different but...

If you've been having trouble paying off your house, buying food and necessities, how on earth can you afford to support and take care of a puppy on top of the other dog you have? This just seems really irresponsible because if you can't take care of yourself how can you take care of this puppy?

Please do not bathe the dog that often, you're going to really irritate the skin. Unless he/she gets filthy just rinsing with water should be enough, or using dry shampoo. Also even with preventative measures, dogs can get ticks. There are collars you can get for prevention against fleas and ticks and they tend to last a lot longer than the topical stuff -- which will probably save you some money in the long run, especially if your dog is outside a lot.

Allergies are very unlikely to have caused that lump as they usually present in the form of inflamed skin and the dog being extremely itchy.

I never use topical. I use pills. just using shampoo till he goes to the vet and gets his pill.

my Boston is on the pill and it works for her.

vet said they will check the spot on pup when he comes in. there not concerned since it's not growing or sore. they told me to just keep it clean and if I have any aloe Vera rub some on it. the aloe will prevent any itching.

I looked up aloe Vera and what it treats and found out it treats more than itch. It treats hot spots, reduces inflammation, eczema, rash and other problems in dogs.

Aloe Vera is a anti–bacterial treatment. Good thing I have a aloe Vera plant. So I can use 100% pure aloe Vera on my pup. Never knew aloe could be used for so many things.. I knew it was for burns but did not know it was good for skin conditions.

Just a friendly reminder to keep it civil and refrain from personal attacks. I understand that pet care can be a heated topic, but I also understand that it can make these sorts of threads head downhill fast. So be nice. :) Thanks!

Just want to let you know, if a dog gets his vaccines (his shots), that a lump can sometimes appear and act similarly to that.

Also, you should not be bathing your dog with flea and tick shampoo every week, that's really dangerous for him, especially if he's a puppy. Be careful please. The flea and tick shampoo should be used only if he has ticks or fleas commonly or if he's infested currently, not weekly <3
