I just wanted to make a feedback thread for people to talk about the recent trend of gray lineart and flatter looking overlays for some of the recent items.
I am personally not a fan of these items; I've been avoiding them because the items don't seem to look great alongside the other style of art currently on the site, and I know a lot of other people are frustrated that they don't seem to follow the CW guidelines that users are expected to follow. Some CIs also have this issue!
I've noticed that not all of the new items are like this, so I'm not sure if this could be classified as a new art style all items are expected to follow. For example, in the new vesnali wears (from what I can tell), the set has flatter CIs and overlays as compared to, say, the line.
Some other recent wears I remember having these issues are the just to name a few.
I'd love to hear what other people have to say and I figured the forums would be a bit easier for people to organize their thoughts than just news posts!
Ah, those pants. It bothers me that you see the HA's line work underneath them, making the line art look even more inconsistent when there's one part that's thicker than everywhere else.
Overall, I'm just confused when I see the revamped items and their light line art and then see something that's also newly released that has heavier line art (like the waffle cones). The really old items with really thick line art doesn't really match most of the wearables on the site right now (though to be fair, line art isn't the only issue with those), but I'm not sure that the grey line art items match a lot of items either.
It's just, kind of weird.
I'm fine with the new items and the variable lineart.
CW standards are IMO way too high for the site, so it doesn't bother me when official art doesn't go there.
There's nothing perfect about the HA we work with it's chibified and distorted and it's pose is supposed to be three quarters but it's weirdly bowed and oddly positioned, so I don't look too much for perfection to the items that it wears.
The artist uses a different technique, I do believe it's not grey lineart, it's black lineart that's a little weak. We're working on it :)
And CW standards are higher because revamping them is less of an option. Through staff we draw up so many thousands of items that sometimes a few will get through that are a bit 'different'. I like to let this happen on occasion to let different styles in a bit which does bring a bit of variety into the site wearables.
Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't! There have been so many things that I've done this with that I thought would get this reaction and they've ended up being very loved! Thanks for the feedback :)
I'm surprised people are only just talking about this like it's a new thing, because we've had items like this for years. I know I've seen it with a bunch of Subeautique lines like Professor New, and it's continued on in newer lines as well:
I always stay away from items like this because I feel the lineart clashes with most other wearables on the site, and I find it hard to make a cohesive HA with such different art styles.

I think it's just a different style and it still mostly fits with the site aesthetic, a couple items here and there are a little off but it's not inherently bad. On the other end sometimes we get items with really thick outer lines, which is also a little awkward.
What I was thinking too. The artist has been on subeta for a while and I personally don't care for the style at all. The style has always looked a bit flat to me and doesn't fit with the general subeta style.
I actually love it a bunch, and most of the time I'm happy to see that artist has revamped something.
It doesn't match a lot of things, and I see the issue there, but it looks sleek and nice.
I don't wike it.
[edit]But seriously, this rustles my jimmies. I've had CWs denied on the pretense of gray lineart or not pure black lineart and this stuff comes through on official art? I'm--

I don't really dislike how some of these types of items look on their own. But compared to other items on the site, it can make them harder to use because the styles are different and they can end up looking weird when used with other items with thicker/darker lineart.
I understand that there are different artists who make things for the site, but I think it makes sense to try to have a generally consistent style across the board, just so that certain things don't end up looking too out of place.
It's not my favorite style personally, but it doesn't bother me that it exists ¯(ツ)/¯ It's clearly not the same style as some other wears, but I don't really think they necessarily look bad together, though I guess that depends on the specific item(s) you're using (though I use a lot of CWs, and CW artists naturally have varied styles anyway, so maybe I'm just more used to compromising between styles or something).
There's another artist whose style I'm not really a fan of (I think, actually, it might be the style of the sundae cones mentioned in the OP. The blobby lamps from last month are a solid example, otherwise). I just...don't buy those items though
just for purely selfish personal aesthetic reasons, i think they're really beautiful. easy to make an HA with? absolutely not.
I think the non-black lineart items are pretty. n_n I wish the standard was the same for cw submissions but I can see why they wouldn't be.
Me too squints These items look so faded to me. I just raise my eyebrow that CW artists are held to the same high standard but official Subeta artists are not. Consistency!
