Not sure if this is the right board or not so let me know if it needs moved. I have a lot of fan pets and I want to work on their stories, however, I am lost a bit on what to write story wise. I don't want to use the exact story of course because I feel like that would be somehow infringing on the copyright of the original but then if I write something else it wouldn't quite make sense since that isn't how things happened. Am I maybe just thinking about this wrong way?
Can I maybe see some fan pet's who are finished or have stories to get some ideas of how I should go about this?

I think the best way to stay away from copyright infringement is while keeping in with canon, to write your own fanfiction about the character. You can freely write fanfiction while referencing canon very easily, and depending on the genre (like a video game) you can write out events while reflecting thoughts they never said aloud or their reactions of frustration, fear, or triumph compared to stoically curb stomping enemies.
I'm going to also ping people to give input. (I own this cult no worries. :B)
I'm so worried about that and mostly for example my pet Nirn. I been reading so much into the lore and about how the planet and planes were created and it is one of those things where I don't think I could do a story around it because it was created only one way which a very set amount of characters type thing.

I agree with nox.
I've written stories for Brad vickers, licker, Chris Redfield, malon and others. I honestly believe making sure to insert a disclaimer goes a long way. Just be sure to have that in there, and maybe be sure you add in your own thoughts, dialogue, events, etc.
mhm I mean there are sooooo many fan fictions around, here on subeta AND the whole internet. Using the world, its names and stuff shouldnt be such a big problem, as long as the credits are clearly from whom the world/names/etc come from?
: as a total loser with almost 100% fanpets, i can tell u that they aren't easy haha. everything that's been said so far is great advice: write your own take on the character or an event that they go through, or make up something completely new involving that character, and make sure to include a disclaimer! i've done all of that and i've never had a problem with copyright stuff. let me know if you need any more help or advice!!
I have only one fanpet: - Kai -
I use the original images and character design, I only changed the course of the story with different characters, different events and a different end. The best idea is to reference as much as you can without using the exact same story, the rules aren't so tight about it.
I have almost entirely fanpets. And the original characters that I do have, they all exist in a certain series' setting and abide by those rules.
My advice: write your take on events that happened, or just write fanfiction! Take a unique point of view on their story, fill in the gaps where you need to, and make it your own. Write about emotions and thoughts and feelings that weren't explicitly there in the canon. Always be sure to have a credits section for fanpets, just to cover your bases.
Assuming you're not claiming the character/design/whatever as you're own, I don't think you'd have to worry about copyright infringement since you're not actually making money off of it. Generally making money is the big motivation for the IP holder to give a cease and desist. Just make sure it's not a fanpet of something like Anne Rice I guess, since she (used to? still does maybe? idk) go after people for writing fanfiction or whatever.
As for bethesda specifically afaik they're pretty chill about fan things. I'd just say if you copy and paste anything, just cite the source.
Thank you guys! You have all given me a better idea on how to go about this now. I appreciate it so much :D
I was finally able to figure out how to do Nirn in particular from your suggestions.

Maybe this will help?
