Do I have to own a bumbus already, or will the schematic turn the pet into a bumbus?

if you have an extra pet slot, you will be given an option of whether or not you wish to create a new one or alter an old one. They will ask you for a name, and if this name is not one of your pets, that will be the new name.
A converted pet will retain its gender. A new pet will get "cog" as a gender.
when using a steamwork schematic to change an existing pet, the pet will take on the species indicated by the schematic. so no, you don't need to already have a bumbus; whatever pet you change will be turned into a steamwork bumbus.
