Hey! I would like to ask, which Linux distribution are you using and why?

I use Ubuntu. It's always had a friendly interface and even if I run into issues (which is very seldom for my uses), it's fairly straight-forward to figure out what needs to be done. It's also the fastest distribution I've had, but then again, it doesn't take much to beat anything else that operates on Windows. ;) I admit I don't update as often as I should, but I think it attests to how good the distribution is when I can say, with no exaggeration, that I've updated Ubuntu 3 times in the past 7 years and it still runs as smoothly as the day I bought the laptop I am currently typing on.

Never been a massive Mac fan, but it has its place. I like the interface for graphic design purposes, but not enough to justify the hefty price tag when I know I could just buy a $300 laptop and put Ubuntu on it. Or get a used Windows setup on the cheap and just use it for graphic design and take the money you saved and put it into another used computer that will be designated for another purpose. :'D

It's a bit of a PITA to use Ubuntu with Chrome sometimes since the powers that be don't want to make updates that are compatible with any Linux distribution; I've also run into issues trying to stream anything on Hulu or Prime, which I'm sure is a soft powers battle for whatever reason. However, I also admit I'm lazy. So instead of trying to fiddle around to make it work (I'm sure there's a way of doing it), I usually just use my phone or the laptop I use exclusively for streaming those things anyway.

I don't game, so I can't attest for that as far as Ubuntu goes. I also admit I keep a cheap Windows desktop hooked up to an art tablet so I don't have to fiddle with licensing and Wine when I want to use anything having to do with Adobe (Photoshop, Illustration, InDesign, etc.)

Ubuntu, for the most part, has been great for me, and even if you combine it with the used desktop and streaming laptop I have, the cost of all 3 computers still comes out to be cheaper than a refurbished Mac that still won't run as quickly my 7 year old laptop on Ubuntu.

Or maybe I'm just a cheapskate. 🤷

I'm not using it right now but I used Ubuntu for years. I have to say that I still miss certain features now that I'm using a computer with Windows 10 (I miss Windows 7) but my favourite games couldn't be played on Linux and for others they might be able to but it's significantly harder and I just don't want to put that kind of effort into it when I can just click and play on Windows. It would be nice if more developers could make games that work on Linux but I know it's a lot harder plus with so many different distros that makes it even harder.

I also tried elementary OS briefly (the main guy behind it insists he's not trying to make an Apple clone but he totally is), openSUSE and Linux Mint. I didn't use Mint for long on my own computer (just a few months iirc) but I went ahead and installed it on my mom's netbook since it was ridiculously slow even when new (back when netbooks were really shitty... like no memory and could barely run). Over time the computer had gotten slower, to the point where if you clicked to open a program it would be ~5 minutes before it started up. Because she couldn't afford a new computer and she liked it for her banking and stuff I backed up her files and installed Mint over Windows. It's worked great for years since Mint is so small compared to Windows (whatever the cheapest, shittiest Windows version would have been that was installed on that thing... some version of Windows 7). Anyway, that's one of the best things about Linux distros: how small they are.

The reminds me that I've also used another distro, but it was only for a short time. I can't remember the name of it... maybe Puppy Linux? Something cutesy, I think. It was small enough to fit on a 2GB stick so I used to carry that stick around in case I needed a backup OS. It could also be used to get around certain blocks on computers too but mostly I just used it to fiddle with things less destructively (since my fiddling was contained to an OS running off a stick). It was also a good backup in case I completely borked an install on my laptop and I needed to use the disc for repairing or finding out how to fix what I'd done.

I don't really play around with computers and different OSes anymore but I did a lot in high school and it was always fun when geeky guys wanted to act like they knew more than I did about computers but then I would start talking about partitions and using the console and they wouldn't know anything about it so I would make them feel small. I just like doing that in general when someone tries to gatekeep me or make me feel stupid. :p

ANYWAY, I mostly used Ubuntu because it was easy to use, looked nice and ran almost everything I needed. It was also fun to play around with. I don't use Ubuntu any more right now because I'm a bit nervous to install it alongside Windows 10 and I'm definitely not erasing Windows because I don't have the technical knowledge anymore and don't want to spend hours fiddling with my computer when it works well right now. :D

I will love you forever if you trade me:

I'm currently writing this on Ubuntu Budgie! I ran Mint and loved it, and I switched for probably the most stupid reason: They took out the speech-bubble styled balloons and I loved those! I tried Solus, cause I like the idea of something fresh, but it didn't run everything I needed. So I'm on Ubuntu Budgie until either Solus works or Mint brings back speech bubbles, and makes Mint-Y (Their current theme) available in different colors :D
