This lesson contains a PRACTICAL assignment. Please remain in character. Any out of character comments should be put behind spoiler tags!
After Professor Makshi was done passing candles out, she cleared her throat and held out her wand. "Experiment with different wand movements, even ones that you think won't do anything. Look in your copies of 'A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration' by Emeric Switch for transformation tips starting on page 27. If you have any questions or need help perfecting a spell, just let me know because I'm going to be transfiguring some candles myself."
Notes for the RP 1.) RP your student character transfiguring a wax taper into something that lights up 2.) Include a picture of a Subeta item that closely resembles the finished product (it doesn't have to be exact as long as you describe it) 3.) Creative, hilariously wrong, or interesting transfigurations may earn extra house points 4.) Please post your RPs under spoiler tags with posts between 1 and 3 paragraphs in length (no more than 3 and no less than 1!)

Chell | Ravenclaw
Chell tapped her wand against the desk in front of her while she thought about the assignment, What are things that light up at a party? The simple question stumped her. She decided to turn to page 27 in her textbook and read the transfiguration tips, hoping that the answer would just come to her eventually, "Form a clear mental picture of the object you are hoping to create before attempting a Transfiguring spell." Great! she thought sarcastically.
She continued reading, "When Transfiguring, it is important to make firm and decisive wand movements. Do not wiggle or twirl your wand unnecessarily, or the Transfiguration will certainly be unsuccessful." Grabbing her wand, she did her best to imitate the "how-to" picture on the page. A swish here, a flick there, and a commanding grip. Chell practiced the motions idly while she thought of items quietly. "Well, the simplest answer is 'lightbulbs'," swish, "But I suppose anything could realistically light up," flick, "Like trees! ... But trees at a party?" swish, "Mmm, or cake. Every party needs a cake," flick, "Wait, cakes don't light up!" swish, "Well, I guess they would if you put lights on them..." flick.

Mallowsweet - Gryffindor
Mallowsweet looked nervously at the large candle that Professor Makshi placed on the table in front of her. The thought of experimenting with wand movements terrified her. Professor Norman still moved fragile items out of her path after the Cheering Charm debacle.
A festive light? she wondered. The only thing she could think of offhand were the fireflies and lightning bugs that sparkled so prettily in the forest on warm Summer nights. Fixing an image of the insects firmly in her mind, she gave her wand a tentative flick and gently tapped the candle. For a second nothing seemed to happen. Then, the entire candle began to shine and swiftly melted into a bubbling puddle of brightly glowing wax. Sighing, the young centaur girl waved to the professor for another candle.
The remains of the candle however, were not done transforming. As Professor Makashi approached with a new candle, the bubbles of molten wax began to harden into hundreds of tiny glowing spheres.
"I suppose glowing caviar is festive, but I'm afraid It'll probably taste like wax" Mallowsweet sighed as her teacher set the new candle down on the table, and pulled out her wand to help Mallowsweet clean up the mass of eggs, now spilling off the table onto the floor. Suddenly though, there was a soft "pop" one of the eggs split open. and a tiny glowing moth emerged. Slowly at first, then in a rush like hot popcorn, all of the eggs began to hatch, surrounding the surprised centaur and her amused teacher with a swarm of glowing bugs.

Aria took four of the tapered wax candles and set them on the desk before her. Staring at the waxy surface she imagined turning them into a different type of candle. She sighed after a long moment, realizing that turning a candle into a different type of candle was not exactly interesting or challenging.
After several long minutes of thinking she began to stare off into the empty void of her imagination. She could only think of one thing, stars peppering the bleak darkness of a cold wintry night sky. Aria closed her eyes and imagined the stars shining brightly and determined that she would try to get stars, real stars, to form from her candles.
Within minutes she had the waxy candles changing shape and gaining in temperature. They began to illuminate from within, coalescing into several small waxy spheres that floated above her desk. After a moment the brightness began winking an blinking like real stars, they began to really create some intense heat so Aria scooted her chair back away from her desk. The searing orbs continued to rotate in the air above her desk, rising slowly until they seemed to reach a happy place of heat, pressure, and distance from other objects. There they continued for the remainder of class, much to Aria's amazement.Public Ping Group - Xanadu Galleria and RAE Collab
I really really extremely want:Nicola Stromwing- Hufflepuff
Tucking her wand behind her ear so she won't tap it on the table while thinking, Nicola muses on the assignment.
Glow, glow, glow... what glows? Well, candles, obviously. Um, flashlight, sun, stars, bio-luminescence... very cool. What has bio-luminescence? Well, fireflies but they are so small. How about the deep sea fish? Oh, right angler fish like in Finding Nemo. Kind of creepy, but cool.
Pulling the wand from behind her ear Nicola concentrates on an angler fish image. Swish, twirl, flick: Nemo. Oops. Angler fish, concentrate. Swish, flick and giant teeth angler fish. Yes!
Amelia Tudor | Hufflepuff
Transfiguration wasn't one of Millie's strong subjects. She usually turned her item into something competently random the first few tries. This time wasn't any different. She sat and read the book several times over. She cleared her and and taped her wand on the candle. It changed into a.. What? An Imp plush? "How in the... did I do that?" She read the book again and tapped her wand a repeated the words. It now turned into a peapot/cup set with baby Imp and daisies all over it. "What's with the Imps?" She screeched. She read the book once more and repeated the spell and in a poof created... An actual Imp.
"GAHHHH!" She screamed when it started created havoc by ripping up pieces of parchment and throwing it at her. Then it grabbed her quill of her desk, snapped it and threw it at it quickly followed by her ink well. The ink well hit her in the face, splashing ink everywhere. It noticed Millie's wand and made a mad dash for it. "Oh no you don't!" She grabbed it and it started biting her fingers and hands. "Ouch you little..." and a full string of expletives in German. She finally grabbed her wand and dazed it with a knockback Jinx. She took a deep breath and grabbed her book again. She tapped her wand against the dazed imp and it suddenly changed into a rather lovely lantern with pink flowers all over it. . She nodded her approval of the lovely item and slipped out of the class room to go wash the ink off her face
Elizabeth Amalia Covington ~ Slytherin
Transfiguration was one of Elizabeth's favourite classes and she was delighted - no pun intended - with the given task. Lights were soothing, calming and peaceful, they made oneself comfortable. She placed the wax candle on the table and flipped through the book until she stopped at page 27 and read it carefully. After reading, she took a moment to think about what she would like to create. It shouldn't be so obvious and Elizabeth started scribbling about luminous and glowing things.
Her thoughts took some time and Elizabeth had finally decided. As every person was glowing from deep within and had a light of her or his own, she had chosen to transfigure the candle into a glowing heart. While the idea of her creation was rather cheesy, she did somehow like it. Excited, she looked at her candle and took her wand firmly before flicking it confidently. The candle turned into a translucent heart, but it was not glowing or light up yet. A bit irritated, Elizabeth flicked her wand again, concentrating on her goal. This time, the heart was starting to glow and it almost looked like a sunrise. Elizabeth admired how radiant the heart was. However, there was one thing that irritated her deeply - she had conjured a black cloth as well and it enwrapped the glowing heart a little. The young witch bit her lip as she stroke over the fabric, but when she looked up, her face was confident and a smile was on her lips as well. The others should just assume she had planned it to look like this.
This was Ezekiel's first transfiguration lesson, and he wasn't expecting it to be so practical. He saw his mother transfigure plants and objects thousands of times, but could he do it? It seemed to be such a delicate process, almost like a art form. He would give his best, but decided it was ok to not get a desired result.
He spent a few minutes just staring at the candle, trying to think about a item that could be beautiful yet simple to transfigure the candle into. Not like a mermaid sculpture, he thought to himself and giggled. Then after some more reading of his book and after silently practicing the spell, he decided he was ready.
Ezekiel stood up, gently waved his wand over the candle, softly said the spell words and a last wand touch and it was done. Well, almost done; his initial idea was a miniature chandelier that could be used as centerpiece for a table or decoration for walls, but all he got was a light bulb. A broken one. The boy slapped his own forehead, disbelieving how bad he was at this. "Sorry professor, I tried my best! ...Maybe the Winter Ball Bouncers can use this as weapon??!".
Merlin, Slytherin
When the assignment was given Merlin was thoughtful for little. "What lights up?" Was his question and suddenly exclaimed. "AHA! Of course!" He read the book pages and nods but was smiling to himself. "We need decorations after all and magical cool ones even more."
He looked to the candle and thought it was a bit lame but the results should be great, he hoped. "Well I need fire so yes, this should do." He looked at what other students were doing and loved the lighted cake. "Wonder how it tastes, if I eat it, will my belly light up?" He chuckled and continued without more distractions.
Merlin practiced the wand movements before trying and decided to test it on another item before the actual candle. He used a crumple paper but it turned to dust. "Not very good, let me focus well." He tried again using a stone and it took the form but no light. "I guess the candle should do it..I hope." One thing he didn't consider was the size of the item he wanted to create but still he made the wand movement and the dragon appeared doing exactly what he wanted, light up the place. "YES!" When the dragon light up his fire, no one was very amused. "Oops." Luckily it was wax so after the first smoke the dragon was consumed by its own light. "It was great! Should I make another professor Makshi?"
That (trans-)figures! by Lysandra from Ravenclaw
Delighted, Lysandra took the slim candle from Professor Makshi, swaying it in her hands.
Transfiguration was one of her favorite objects.
Not able to use her inherited elven magic by nature so far, using a wand as an aid to accomplish her goals let magic flow nicely.
She opened the recommended book on the very page, caressing the old brown leather, yet she knew its contents by heart. Making firm and decisive wand movements was well known to her and at her advanced state, she didn´t need to say the spell aloud. Lysandra wished with all her heart she could say this for her eleven magic, too.
So, what would give Hogwards even more beauty when glowing? Lysandra pondered some pictures in her mind, doffing this and that, most of her ideas wouldn´t meet this magic academy´s standard. Suddenly, an image crossed her mind which reminded her very much of home. She smiled, concentrated and put her wand to action: Circling the wax taper once from the base to the top, she then imitated the shape of the object she wanted to achieve. „Cornu Lux Susurrans!“ she thought in her mind, feeling a tingle of anticipation. Up, sideway, down, sideway, swirls and an elegant movement to the top again and she could feel the wax first melt, then harden again and transform into something more durable, harder, even something more …. lively? Looking at the item sitting neatly before her on the table, Lysandra sighed with relief. She had managed to transfigure the candle into an Enchanted Lantern like she knew them from home yet this one was considerably improved! It not only glowed in a beautiful light, it also whispered encouragements when somebody stands nearby. „You´ll make it!“ Lysandra could hear the lantern´s soft voice, „You´re beautiful!“ it whispered to a young girl passing by, elated, which caused the lass to blush yet then she got a spring in her step, swaying her long brown hair. „You´ll be home soon!“ the lantern spoke into Lysandra´s ear, soothing. Light-heartedly, the half-elf looked about for Professor Makshi, hoping she would approve of something not only luminous but also speaking.

Ellie Wilding, Gryffindor
Hrm, what should I try and make with this wax candle Ellie thought silently to herself whilst staring at the candle. I do like lanterns...maybe a floating lantern that will dim during the daylight hours and increase in brightness as the evening and night comes...yea, that would be cool!, her thought bringing a smile to her face as her idea began to take shape in her head.
Quickly turning to page 27 in her 'A Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration' Ellie reviewed some of the tips and began practicing some wand movements, careful not to transform her candle into anything just yet. After practicing a few wand movements, Ellie thought that a swirl and a quick flick would be the best movements to make her lantern.
Creating a clear image in her mind of the lantern she wanted to make was key, so she pictured a beautiful metal caged lantern, with the spokes of the cage very close together with a circular hole in the front and the back to let out light that had an inlay of a cherry blossom tree to give the light a more calming tone and with a swirl and quick flick, Ellie watched as the wax candle turned into the exact lantern she had pictured in her head.

Jona Fletch / Hufflepuff
Despite it being his first year still, Jona was determined to prove how good he was a Transfiguration. He placed his wax candle with conviction on the wooden table in front of him, determined to prove he belonged here and that his magic was true. He raised his wand and began visualizing what he wanted the candle to transform into. He wanted the light to look alive, moving around like fireflies, but he needed to contain them somehow, too. He imagined a simple glass bottle holding within it the night sky. Something like...
When the spell casting came into effect, Jona realized he'd done something terribly wrong though. Perhaps he'd focused too hard on the concept of the lights looking alive? Although, the end result wasn't horrific or catastrophic - at least, not yet - it still wasn't what he was going for...
Where the tapered wax candle once stood, was instead a small rabbit with numerous hairs that each shone an individual ray of light. The bunny twitched its nose and looked up at Jona, staring intently for a moment before leaping into his arms and leaving a trail of translucent white light behind it. Jona marveled at the little creature in his arms and whispered gently, "You're amazing. I can't believe you came from me."

Hrrmmm...Cassie wound the tip of her wand idly around the waxy wick of her candle. Something to light up the winter. Something festive. An idea took shape in Cassie's mind. She practiced it a few times before concentrating on the candle. Slowly the wax lightened from deep red to white and began to break apart, dissolving into a spiral of snowflakes that twisted and turned in mid air. Once the little flurry appeared to be stable, Cassie gave one last mental push and the snowflakes lit up, creating a floating flickerthat danced mid-air. Satisfied, Cassie sat back and waited for the professor.

Keet Arlie, Ravenclaw

Keet was excited, this was just the type of lesson she enoyed! Transfiguration was one of her favorite subjects, and she loved getting a chance to be creative. She took her candle eagerly, and thought long and hard about what she could transform it into. What else gave off light? What kind of things inspired her? She considered that for a moment, then grinned broadly. She knew what she was going to try.
Swishing her wand gently, Keet concentrated hard on what she wanted the candle to transform into. The candle began to elongate a bit, and the wax began to break apart and spread out, almost forming beads. She continued to concentrate, and the beads of wax became translucent, bright, and faceted, and the wick elongated more to form a string. With a final flick of her wand, the finishing touches were added. She observed her work with a modest, but pleased smile. Where her candle had been, now laid a garland of sparkling gems, which seemed to emanate their own light from within. She could wait to use these to decorate for the festival!
Drew Wilder ~ Slytherin
Taking the candle when the Professor handed it to him, Drew slowly rolled the taper back and forth in his hand. Something that gave light? Well the obvious things like light bulbs, lanterns, or even fairy lights were out as far as he was concerned. He wanted to try something different. Of course Transfiguration and Charms hadn’t been his best subject when he started Hogwarts, but Drew had practiced and now at least he didn’t have quite so many disasters. So perhaps he’d better make it different but still fairly simple. He continued rolling the candle, feeling the wax grow warm under his touch and then smiled as an idea dawned.
Placing the candle on the top of his desk, he studied it and formed a visual picture in his mind of it in four sections. Then waving his wand with a slicing motion, he divided the candle into smaller cylinders. Now to form them into balls, Drew thought, recalling how he’d rolled the candle. His wand now made circular motions over each section until four small, milky white orbs formed.
The last part was going to be the trickiest and Drew bit his lip and concentrated hard. Slowly, one at a time, each orb began to glow…one green, one blue, one red, and one yellow. He cast a levitation charm on them and watched as they circled his head. Then with a final bit of inspiration, Drew swished his wand in a movement that had the orbs following like bugs to a light. The orbs joined together again and formed a shimmering ball of silvery light that after a moment divided into four orbs again and continued to repeat the pattern in a representation of the four Hogwarts houses, both separate and together, and shining even brighter when joined.

((ooc: I realize there are only 3 orbs with the subeta item but it’s close to what Drew is going for))
Niamh Doyle, Gryffindor
Niamh had been practising her Transfiguration skills, and was quietly confident as she looked at her wax candle for inspiration. She pictured a large muggle-style barber's shop pole, with glowing fairy lights twisted around it.
Flicking through her book, she found the page she was after and read through the instructions. She scribbled down the wand movement needed to transform the size and look of the candle, then closed the book and raised her wand to begin. As she started the first wand movement, her nose started itching and she sneezed. Looking at her candle, she realised to her horror that her sneeze had messed up the wand movement, and the candle had already transformed... just not into what she had in mind.
Still, a cold ice pop with what appeared to be permanent flames flicking around it would could as being "something that lights up", right?

Keliora, Ravenclaw
Keliora stared at the tapered candle that was in her hands. Setting a match to it and lighting it would transform it into something that imparted light, but somehow she thought that wasn't what Professor Makshi had in mind.
Setting the candle on her desk, she practiced waving her wand in various movements as Professor Makshi had instructed. Since she had no clear idea on what she wanted it to become while she was doing this, her candle managed to explode into gobs of wax a couple times before she finally settled on an idea and found a wand movement that really captured what she had in mind - a glistening, reflectively bright snowflake. Perfect for the winter festival!
