The Bulletin of Atomic Scientists (BAS) has moved the Doomsday Clock to 2 minutes before midnight, tying with the year 1953, the year the US tested the hydrogen bomb, the closest it has been to midnight.
Your thoughts? your predictions?
Considering they go by increments, I wouldn't be too surprised if next year we get 1.5 minutes to midnight but who knows. Maybe it will be a good year. I don't like scaremongering and I know they have good intentions but it feels like they are? Idk. It's not like we need a clock to tell us the world is more tense than it was in 1991 (17 minutes to midnight). /shrugs Would be nice to get other viewpoints about the clock though. Post away? c:
What was the reason for their decision to move the clock further?
I think the nearest the world was to a nuclear war was the cuba crisis.
the article expands on the reasons, growing nuclear threat seems to be the main thing along with '"weakening of institutions" around the world in dealing with major global threats - including climate change - was another major concern'
they only convene once a year and the Cuban Missile Crisis was like 2 weeks in October so the timing was off imo but who knows :x
Not to be negative, but just thinking realistically, I wouldn't be surprised if we even get 1 minute to midnight. When I saw this I wasn't the least bit surprised. Speaking on the politics side of this without mentioning names, I think people should be prepared for tensions to escalate, maybe result in something, but hopefully the likely parties will realize how catastrophic the consequences would be and just continue to do what other governments have done long before them which is just spend your time deescalating because sometimes that is the only solution you have. As far as environmental changes go, I think reversing is out of the question by this point, and it's more preservation and prevention of what we still have and saving it for the future. The world will always have tension and hate, there's no solving that for good, just hoping that you can somehow ease it and maybe be cordial. But hate seems to be rising with the clashing of ideologies, and it seems that its no longer able to be contained. I think its more so trying to get back to basics of understanding and hoping someone breaks the cycle first. I don't envy anyone in a position that can actually change things, because it's obvious its always been very difficult to make peace with the human psyche. A thing we know for sure is that its humans who are to blame for pretty much everything, whether they meant it deliberately or not. We become so concerned with the day to day means, which we should don't get me wrong, that we forget about the overall impact and consequences of our actions. We just need to even it out, and maybe there's hope for the future and even ticking that clock backwards, because why not? Hope has brought us many blessings in the past, I don't see why it can't bring us some more in the future.
yeah I hope we don't get 1 minute to midnight :x you make excellent points
people's ideologies seem to be gravitating toward extremes (whether that's to the left or right or whatever you want to label it as), which is not conducive to maintaining the peace
you could even argue social media's influence in this trend towards extremes but I feel like that would open another can of worms
as much as I don't like scaremongering, I hope the clock's message could be a wake-up call to people in charge
Your last two sentences are pretty much on point. People ask what's different now than what was in the past, and social media is different. It's very influential and it's played its part esp in the last couple to few years in flaring tensions all across the board. I hope the thought of the ticking being this close to midnight and maybe even more so in the near future, will be the wake up call not only certain parties need but everyone as a whole needs to finally realize that their actions, even just words, have real world consequences. Sometimes, taking the same amount of time you would to even tweet something, but taking it to just breathe and count yourself down instead, does wonders. Less action might seem less bold, but sometimes its taking a step back, taking a step down, even owning a mistake, that's more brave than any action at all.
