Hello everyone, I am in a bit of a financial situation and I was wondering if I could get some advice on it. I am currently a senior at Washington State University specializing in Environmental Science. I am one semester away from graduating, however, I do not have the funding to continue (ie: my financial aid is exhausted). Basically, I no longer have the money to pay off my student accounts (ie: which means I can not remove the holds on my account to sign up for classes next semester), as well as fund tuition for the next semester. I have looked into taking out private loans, however, I do not have a family member willing to co-sign (ie: applying individual is next to impossible as I do not have a credit history). I have also looked into scholarships as well though I do not meet any of the requirements to apply. Being at the end of my rope I resorted to creating a gofundme account. I recognize that gofundme accounts created for tuition are generally frowned upon but I did not know what else to do. My only problem here is I do not have the support system to assist it (ie: I do not have much in the way of family and friends). So I am asking does anyone have any ideas to help me be able to fund my last semester at college?

Finding a job is probably your next best bet. It doesn't need to be something fancy at all either. Perhaps, take a look around your campus and see if you can find a job there or around the area. If you can't, a job online could do the trick (there are several freelance jobs that mostly require writing skills/tutoring). Is it possible to ask a relative for money? Or your friends?

You could aslo add your Gofundme page on your facebook (remember it isn't allowed on Subeta).

I would recommend going to the financial aid office at WSU and explaining the situation. I had a similar problem when I was in undergrad and it took two trips and tears for me to get to the right person and I found out that I could apply for student loans through the university without the need for a cosigner. Like it was lowkey appalling that I thought I was going to drop out and it took forever to find out I could apply to a university loan LOL.

The financial aid office will also be better equipped to let you know about other options available to you. My university has an emergency financial aid fund that is need-based (it is funded through philanthropy) and not scholarship/GPA based. There may be something similar.

A job to help supplement will also help, but since you cannot even register for your courses right now that isn't going to solve your immediate problem. :(

Good luck!

and

I currently do have a job, I work at Owen Science and Engineering Library. However, the job is through work study and it is dependent on my enrollment status which at the moment I am not enrolled due to hold placed on my account through my student account which is currently not paid off due to lack of funding. In regards to asking a relative for help, that is not possible. In regards to my extended family, my family cut ties with them a long time ago due to toxic behavior (ie: this includes my mother's extended family and my father's extended family). The only family member I have left is my mother and her financial situation tenuous due to the death of my father back in February. In regards to friends, I do not have many. Those that I am friends with I do not have much contact with them. I guess I could set up a Facebook account though I am not overly fond of social media platforms (ie: personal bias).

At the moment I can not speak to Financial Aid as the campus is closed for the holidays. They will reopen after New Years. In the meantime, I am looking into alternatives, like the Freelance jobs that mentioned.

I didn't get that you weren't enrolled at all. Just like mentionned, going to your financial aid office at school is a solution and they will be much more helpful. Meanwhile, finding a job that does not depend on your enrollment is a priority to be able to pay these fees. Freelance jobs are more or less stable so I wouldn't suggest these in the long run (I did work freelance writing and it's competitive/random). As a last resort, I would suggest being a 'tester' for a pharmaceutical research as well or maybe giving plasma? (are these still paid?) You can also sell some items or if you are skilled enough to draw or code, set up a paypal and take commission on Subeta?

There can also be a possibility of postponing this semester in favour of finding work or being a part-timer. I wish you the best of luck. I am myself scholarship-bound with a high GPA requirement and it's stressful.

I would rather not take another semester off from college if I can avoid it. I already did it once back in the August of 2016 when my father had a massive hemorrhagic stroke and my mother and I thought he was going to die at the time. This created tension between my boyfriend (who is also my roommate) and I because during the time period I was unable to find a part-time job in Pullman. The job market here is unstable especially with jobs outside of campus. I am looking into it, and I see if there are any "tester" positions as well. I know there were advertisements on Craigslist a while back on giving plasma but I do not know if there are still up. I will look into it.

I do not have much in the way of skill sets (ie: coding or art). So taking commissions is definitely out of the question.

It's a worst case scenario, but you may need to be forced to pull out temporarily. If it comes to that, try to talk with your boyfriend and lay down the situation. Remember that it would be a short break and not something that will go on for long. Unfortunately, a fundraiser is really working out if you can get good coverage. But setting one up is better than nothing at all. If you are using public forums, you can try to post your fundraiser there (since you don't have facebook and I assume no Twitter nor Tumblr either) Don't bother starting them if your friends cannot help you boost it. But if they are willing to share your Gofundme link, it's off to a start.

You could also try to find work as a housekeeper etc. Really anything to get by. Meanwhile, reduce expense as much as possible. I wish you the best of luck.

  1. SCHOLARSHIPS! Go to the financial aid, look online, and anywhere to find scholarships. There are SO many, that sometimes if you apply - you get it , because no one else applied!
  2. Babysitting/dog sitting makes a lot of money. $10-20+ an hour, work with your hours, and see people in your area. Sign up @ Care.com
  3. Coupons! Use coupons!
  4. If you buy things online, use ebates.com to get money back! I use it all the time and have a check every month for me.
  5. Hunt for a job, easier said than done and it's harder. Do you commute to college? IF not, find a job on campus!
